New York City is going to eventually put a plan into action. This plan will allow people to have their sex legally altered. The catch? Medical surgery isn't required. There are some restrictions, but other than that, pretty much anyone can get it. In other words, they're going to redefine gender so that it is based around personality, rather than genitals. Can you imagine some of the problems that could crop up from this? I know I can. In particular, this line from the article hopefully doesn't need any explaining as to the troubles it could cause.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority also agreed last month to let people define their own gender when deciding whether to use the men’s or women’s bathrooms.

Anyhow, without further ado, go here for the full article.

Gender and sex aren't the same thing.
There's a whole ton of grey area when it comes to gender identity.

I think, with enough sensible restrictions, this is a step in the right direction.

While it might be... I'm guessing that where this is headed, it won't end well.

They probably have some safeguard against that.

Something along the lines of not being absolutely retarded.

It's nice to give people more rights, but this probably won't end well. Think of the craziness that could happen!

Who decides that they want to be a different gender? It's an outrage! Well, not really, but just because you don't like your gender doesn't mean you should legally be able to change it.

Well unless they put up a big "No Penises Allowed" sign, legally they can't really say I can't go in.

This should go in the Debate forum, it's seems like an argumentative issue. Many things to consider are people who take this seriously, take advantage, or take offense. Yes, it is true that people may feel fate delt them wrong hand of Queen over King or King over Queen. These people, feeling that they have the right to be a different sex, feel, mentally, that they are that opposing sex. Of course, these people should also realize that the cards of sexuality give more than its emotions. If one feels female, then be one. But being female is defined as more than feeling female. It's as illogical as saying oneself is, for example, black. This person may have grown up in a culture rich in the African American culture, and may also have assimilated to the lifestyles of the average African American. This, however, does not mean that they are, in whole, someone of African origin. Of course, in America today, there is all but little discrimination of race. But, some things do exist with men and women. Namely bathrooms, sports, and marriage. A male feeling female will still not give him/her the right in some areas to marry a male who feels male. However, one thing of interest is that a male feeling female could marry a female who feels female. Which, technically, would be considered gay marriage. As for sports, it is a private organization and therefore is entitled to their own right of what role gender plays.

Bathrooms ... there are several ways to go on this. First, one thing to note is that as far as most people, it isn't likely that their house has a Men's and Women's bathroom. But it is also fair to judge that people have more privacy in their own homes where they don't have to fear exposure from people who can freely enter. Note that some locations have unisex bathrooms, but these are always one person only, so the person still has their privacy.
One of the issues is someone may take advantage of their right to use the opposite sex bathroom after given legal status of being that different sex just to say "Hey. I'm actually a woman who is a lesbian." But this is just as bad/likely as someone getting approached in the bathroom by a homosexual.
In any case, bathrooms should be designed for what the persons physical attributes show. Urinals don't change. But, if people are that desperate for bathroom rights of their sexuailty, there is really only one thing to do:
XX-XX
XY-XX
XX-XY
XY-XY
Foue bathrooms, dependent of mentality and sexuaility. As illogical as that may sound, just think of this issue in what it begins with, it isn't so strange in reality.

It also gives guys the green light to use the women's bathroom if the men's is full and vice-versa.

Waaaaaay too many headaches here.

This of course raises the issue of why, exactly, do we have separate bathrooms for the different genders. Why not unisex bathrooms? We could just as easily have one big bathroom that was all cubicles. Toilets are pretty much the last gendered spaces left in society and I'm not sure there's a need for them, aside from socially instilled modesty.

I'm given to understand most toilets in Eastern Europe, for example, are unisex.

This... certainly is strange. I've never thought that'd be possible, anyway.
And I don't think anybody would like to change sex anyway... just maybe to see how it is to be a woman/man?
At least I don't live even NEAR New York .
