Ok, sort of the next chapter from a previous thread.

I've put my old hard drive in an external hard drive. I've put it on this computer and other windows computers. The drive is NFTS, and has "files restrictions" that prevent me from getting into all of my old computer. I've tried to boot from it, but it's not bootable. I want to get those files out; my mp3s and my writings, but Windows won't let me in the folder.

I can do it if I boot from Linux, but then I can't write those folders and files to be read from Windows, so it seems I'm stuck only accessing them from a linux boot.

You should be able to select all of the files, go into Properties, and in the Security tab take over the ownership of them

Sort of. I can go into the "sharing" tab in properties, and tell the folder to open it up to sharing for all computers. I've done this for some folders, and I've done it for the HD properties itself. But I still can't access the folders under my main username in the HD.

That's only for network sharing, doesn't do anything with local drives. What version of Windows are you using? I think Windows XP Home stripped away the useful features that apply to your problem :/

At worst, you could copy the files onto your Linux partition, remove the NTFS partition, put a FAT32 partition on it, then copy the files back there.

Will Fat32 allow me to read those files, even if they're write protected?

I think that is what I'm going to do, if so. But I also need to figure out how to FAT32 it. Windows XP only allows me to NFTS it.

From Linux, you can just use Parted to make it a FAT32 filesystem. Of course, make sure you copy the files _first_, otherwise you'll have some headaches recovering files.

Thanks, but I'm still concerned: If I do this, will the write protections on those files still prevent my from viewing them, after I port them back onto my new FAT32 FS, as I look at them from this computer? (This computer, on windows, will still be running NFTS).

Linux-NTFS currently completely ignores security bits on NTFS filesystems. In other words, they shouldn't be marked read-only when moved back onto a FAT32 (even if they were, it's nothing more than removing the read-only bit that FAT has).

All right. I know that about linux, it was the FAT32 thing I was worried about. Thanks. I'm going to do it tomorrow.

Though actually for me it's going to be more complicated. I have to use my other laptop that runs linux only to do it, but I think I'll have to reformat that PC so that it runs a smaller linux version to fit all the files on it before I reformat the NFTS HD.

Oh brudder, do I hate Windows.
