I wrote a little DHTML app for creating layouts. It can't do everything you could by hand-coding, but it can make fairly decent layouts.

Use is pretty self-explanatory. You can use the slidebar to the side and bottom to adjust the outside padding. The slidebars don't work like normal slidebars, you click them once to start moving them and again to lock it (don't drag it). Colors, fonts, borders, and the main background image are chose with dropboxes that expand when you mouseover them. If you choose custom from the color chooser, or double-click on any color (including the current one) it will open the custom color chooser, which works basically like the one in ms paint, but without the fancy multicolored square. All font sizes are in percents and widths and heights are in pixels, except the main right and left padding which is in percents.

You can switch between different aspect of you layout to work on by click the tabs at the top.

Most things you change will update the preview right away, except slidebars require you to lock it in place before you see the changes, and you'll have to change something else for something typed in a text box to take effect.

Once you have it looking how you want, click the output tab and and copy the code into your profile.

Caveats:

1. I've tested it to work on lololol 1.5.0.7, and Internet Explorer 6.0.3790.1830 (kind of works on Opera 9, but not really) on Windows, at 1024x768, with default font sizes. If it doesn't look or act right for you, and you have a different configuration, that might be why. It looks best on lololol.

2. The code it produces should work with any CSS 2 compatible browser, except transparencies on Opera will only show up in version 9 or greater, and if you use images for seperators, in IE they'll show up with a thin gray border around them.

3. The sliders for setting the top and bottom won't line up after you've edited other things in your layout.

4. Keep in mind, that if you leave the page or reload, you'll lose all your work.

5. It probably won't work too well on slower computers.

6. It's full of bugs. I'm sure of it.

Anyway, here it is.

I have a question :O

If by using that I can replicate another person's layout and just change the colors or/and pictures, would that count as stealing?

I'm happy of my actual "Layout" (If it can be called that), but once I get bored, basing my Layout on someone else's Layout (Specially if it's a good one) sounds like a good option (Better than hitting my head against the wall trying to think about something good).

BTW,

Well, since you can't really copy their code into the layout maker, you'd have to try to recreate it just by looking at it, which I think counts as clean room development, so no, it wouldn't really be stealing, but you should give credit in your layout anyway.

Anyway, I made a few edits to fix a couple of problems. For one thing if you add an image to the content box, it no longer overlaps the side of any quotes.

Also, I forgot to mention, OPB stands for "originally posted by".

Edit: Ok, apparently it doesn't work in internet explorer, only lololol. - Nevermind, I fixed it in IE.

I actually quite like this. I made the background a few days ago when I was screwing around with GIMP. I think I'm keeping this as my normal background and I don't think I'll be doing it the normal way again! ^^

EDIT: Though: I don't know if it's lololol or your thing, but the menus are a little annoying to use.

Emcee- this is a pretty genius idea IMO. If this thread were stickied somewhere or more high-profile, it'd help noobs and veterans alike to create layouts. New people usually end up screwing around with the html and creating horrific things they call layouts that break tables or etc., and this would help cut down on this by combating ignorance. Again, brilliant.
Heck, if you made it even a little more featured it could be better--something like Uly perhaps suggested, inputting raw code and seeing results with the ability to change it bit-by-bit. However, I can see your limitations in this regard and it would merely be a luxury if such a thing were done.

I like this as well. I agree with Dr_Death16 about not having to worry about breaking tables with this. That's why I haven't had an actual layout until now because I don't know CSS that well.

Thanks for the feedback.

Nebetsu: You're right about the menus being annoying, having them automatically pop open when you mouseover and close when you mouseout seemed like a good idea in my head, but in practice it's just kind of frustrating. If I have time tommorrow I'll change them so there's something you click to open and close them.

Dr_Death16: I was thinking of something similar to that, where the code could be manually edit while using it. The only problem is as soon as you make a change with one of the menu options you would lose any manual changes you made. There's probably a way around this, though, it would just take some work. Or maybe, I could just put a link on the output panel to a seperate app for editing the code

Anyway, I just fixed a little bug in it where the "Originally Posted By" text is bigger in the preview than it is in your actual layout.

I'm thinking of adding a save feature, since it should be pretty easy to implement.

The interface was fine! Be quiet you fools!
I made this pretty easily, and it looks great!

I will definetly use this again in the future in case I want to change it again (I've been thinking of a Kirby Super Star one).

You could have just ASKED me you know

Anyways, I clap for the existence of this. Mainly for the fact that now we wont have people going "OMG HALP WHAT IS LAYOUT?"

Hmmm...Tuna never said anything like that when he viewed it in Opera...

I'll look into it, but is it really a problem yet? (ie. Tables broken, stretching)

Bad: Hard to work with
Good: It makes layouts pretty well.
I made this for fun, and now I use it. It's good for people who can't make layouts, or who isn't good at them. In short, This works well, but making it could be easier.

Well this is kind of dumb. I remembered that I was having problems with transparencies on IE back when I was making my last layout. So I checked to make sure it was displaying right with layouts made with this and it wasn't. I tried everything I could think of to make them show up. Then, I viewed source on one. Turns out, for some reason the board is converting the word filter (followed by a colon) into x:, which messes it up.

What property are you using for transparency effect? Opacity doesn't work in IE, so if that's your problem, you can blame Microsoft--my own layout uses it as well.

No, it doesn't break anything, and almost looks intentional until you really think about whether SonicandFAILS would have the design savy to offset his quoted text in such a way.

Well then, Opera users get an extra touch to my layout! Totally free!

Fun. I might be doing another layout soon, this one was just thrown together, and I got my Kirby idea worked out fairly well.

Opacity works fine on IE with filter:alpha(opacity=n). And it will show up in the preview on the layout maker, but not in your actual layout.

Edit: Ok, I found out that by taking out the space between the colon after the word filter and the word alpha, it keeps it from being blocked. So new layouts using transparencies will work, and if you already created one, just find where it says filter and remove the space after the colon.
