In the news, a jihad is usually used interchangably with a group that lobs people's heads off. However, jihad" (ǧihād جهاد is an Arabic word which comes from the Arabic root word "jahada", which means "exerting utmost effort" or "to strive"(Wikipedia). Who do you think establishes such stereotypes; the government, media, or the not-so-common Muslim extremists?

A combination of consistent intolerance towards Islam and Muslims as well as a media and government that does not do much to explain the difference between an extremist Muslim and a 14 year old boy who is a pacifist Muslim who happens to disagree with the concept of war in the Middle East. I know that sounds like a hyperbole, but the vast majority of America, Canada and Europe and other nations are fairly uneducated about Islam.
Since I've learned lots about Islam through well...learning when I think of a jihad, I think of a concept of two warring factions within oneself, which is one of the original philosophies that shaped jihad. |

My only thoughts that I can add to this is that I really don't believe that Muslim extremists are helping to alter this stereotype either. And Ziff, as far as ignorance goes, you could say that of many religions, for example, how many scientologists really are aware of what is taught at the higher levels of their religion?
Not to say that the situation is necessarily comparable though... (edited by Thayer on 12-13-05 10:07 PM) |

Apologies for the less-than-dead-serious response....
But when I hear the word "jihad" I am reminded of one of two things -- the New Zealand rock band "Shihad" who was required to change their name to "Pacifier" in order to try to break into the US market as the name Shihad was too offensive.... ... and cheesy American Action Flicks where some highly stereotypical terrorist group declares "jihad" against the US (ie, True Lies and the Crimson Jihad group in there) and then Arnold Schwarzenegger saves the day by blowing a bunch of things up. I don't have any real serious thoughts about the word "jihad" though otherwise. I don't think the media or Australian culture has exactly provided me with a great deal of good information or unbiased information so that I can form any real serious thoughts about it either. ...thus rock bands and hollywood action flicks.... |

Originally posted by ArwonOriginally posted by Tarale Well, we all know Allah's a rocker and he loves Arnie Which reminds me, there is a third thing that comes to mind when the word "jihad" is mentioned -- and that's sensationalist, really overdramatic media coverage / fearmongering. But let's face it, rock music and hollywood action flicks are MUCH more fun. |

I think of the old Cyberstorm computer games, in which "Jihad" was a powerful missile system with very short range and huge area of effect; an "I'm going down, but I'll take you with me" kind of weapon.
In real life, I think of it as a reprisal against a perceived wrongdoing, particularly in large numbers by muslim groups. Not necessarily barbaric or terrorist, just a reprisal. |

Actually, I think the actual meaning of Jihad for most Muslims is a struggle in the name of Islam, be it internal or external. So depending on context Jihad could mean many things, for instance fasting, could be a form of Jihad. When used in the context of those who feel that terrorism is an act in the name of Allah, then Jihad does mean Holy War.
Also, there is an anchorwoman on a local station around here with the last name Geeha, which is what I thought of the first time I heard of Jihad. |

Well if we are talking about the definition, then I think of "struggle" (as thats what it means). So when I hear it, I only think of how others perceive it as "holy war". I really don't like how this has been misinterpreted because it only encourages hate and close mindedness.

Well, Hollywood Action Flicks are real bad at misrepresenting the word "Jihad". In fact, I don't think I've seen the word "Jihad" EVER, EVER used in any kind of American TV series or movie in a way that isn't negative.
Particularly for a while after 9/11, there was a lot of REALLY horrible TV coming to Australia out of the US that more or less painted "Jihad" as something "the bad guys were going to do". Unless you more or less go out of your way to find the definition of the word; pretty much all mainstream popular culture makes it look bad. Which sucks. |
