Kyouji, can't you be a team player just once? Draw something better, Negative Nancy. I persoanlly love this. I could not draw this well at all (though I may come close). I wish I had your skill.

The hairline in the old work is a bit better, though it's still not center.
Everything else that was subtly changed, looks excellent. Your chibi style is cute to me, but that's just it. A style. Kyouji isn't into it, obviously. |

How else am I supposed to prove him wrong? He hasn't done any hand drawn/CGed work (or if he has, he hasn't posted it), so I have nothing else to go on.

Originally posted by Dark Hero, Jet Black Ah, so you just don't like my art style. Well, you can kiss my curvy behind, because that's the way I draw and I'm not changing for the likes of you Big eyes are more or less a staple of my art style, it's not often I'll draw anything that doesn't have big eyes. As for general body proportion -- well, anime is FAR from realism -- it's loosely based on real anatomy, but generally quite exaggerated and caricatured. Comparing anime anatomy to real anatomy is like comparing Barbie Dolls to real anatomy. Meh, and that posture is called "contrapposto" although it's incomplete -- and completed in the blueline fix sketch. It probably might mess up her back in the original sketch, but in the second should be a natural relaxed balanced stance. |

Originally posted by Tarale*sighs* Everyone always hates the critic. Now, I didn't say you should change, I said I didn't like it. Things like that always struck me as the creator just going "Well, I can't draw realistically worth a crap, so let's just draw something ridiculous but which is much easier." You can't really really compare the contrast between this and realism to that of anime, because this is a great deal more out of natural proportion than that is... ... Unless you're referring to the whole "chibi" style, which always struck me as stupid anyway. I mean, it takes no skill whatsoever to do something like that, and it's always used for comic effect in things which are supposed to be serious and it just kills the mood and keeps people from taking it as seriously as they would otherwise... ... And now I'm ranting, so I'll just be quiet. EDIT: And another thing is that Aeris was never meant to be drawn with this style. It looks silly on her, honestly. The lighthearted look just doesn't seem to fit on a character who's been oppressed a great deal and then is murdered by a madman. About your opinion over chibi art, that's fine. But you seem to be pushing that into this thread as though it's a fact rather than an opinion.
If others like that style that taryn is very good at it, then don't mind it. If you dislike it no matter how good the art is, then just don't comment in threads about a chibi drawing. You're not going to like it no matter what. That's like buying tickets to a football game even though you have an extraordinary hate for the game. |

Alright...
I'm just going to say exactly what I need to say. I just feel that the style itself is full of fluff and has no real merit. Certainly, it's better than what I can do, but... I don't try, and have no practice with it, so that's not hard. I don't know exactly how to put it; I just know from the deepest corners of my soul that this is subpar work. Additionally, I am deeply frustrated by the fact that Taryn is getting so much praise for this. I view this piece as a light sketch; I just don't understand why anyone likes it. It just doesn't seem to have any value; the style itself takes little real skill and the only thing that makes it notable is that it was done with a ballpoint pen. It's not like she does fantastically better work when she can correct her errors and apply color to things, either. I feel it would just be better if Taryn gave up this fluff and concentrated on something more realistic, with a better style, something that simply had more artistic value. Hell if I know how to define it; again, I don't exactly have a major in art. I just know... I don't know how, I just KNOW... That this is not good work. I don't know how to say this any clearer. And yet, everyone just dismisses what I have to say as being that of an opinionated idiot, which frustrates me even more... I just don't know what to do anymore. |

Hey, just because people disagree with your views doesn't mean they think you're an idiot. They just... disagree. Simple as that. It's no big deal.

But that's it, I don't want to do realism.
I love cartoons. I've always loved cartoons, and anime. I love cartoon art. Ever since I was a little kid, I was facinated by cartoons and comics, and I wanted to do cartoon art. No, not even that, I wanted to be a cartoon. Realism doesn't excite me. It doesn't get me fired up, I have no passion for it. I can't do something that I have no passion for, my heart just isn't in it. What I AM passionate about is cartoons, so that's what I do. What I don't do well -- and what I know to be my major artistic failing -- is exp Everything else in the meantime is practice. Practice drawing arms better. Practice shading in a different style. Practice drawing a contrapposto pose. Practice and constant refinement of linework, until the day when I can actually properly exp Until then, I'd appreciate actual constructive criticism on my linework, shading, etc, to help me to actually get to the point where I can trust my artistic style to exp (edited by Tarale on 12-13-05 10:10 PM) |

Originally posted by Tarale O.o ... my goodness. You tore a page right out of my book ... ... wow. Anyway, I'm going to have to agree on some occasions with Kyouji ... Alastor ... Jet Black ... To me, the artwork is nothing special ... just a sketch. However, Taryn ... Tarale's art just has that quality to it that makes it appealing to the eye (especially to internet nerds). Her art isn't meaningful and it's not terribly "artistic" in the most hierarchical sense of the word, but it looks pretty ... and people like it. She'd be pretty baller if she applied a little exp On a tangent, exp =) There's a lot you can do. As for a critique of the artpiece: 1) Nice use of ballpoint pen and your characterization. 2) A few general anatomical errors in the head. The chin seems like it's right up against the throat, the cheek bone juts out, and the hair isn't too compatible with the skull in some places. 3) Although the hair and blouse have nice contrast and are well done. The jacket is only ... three shades of grey ... about that much anyway. There should be plenty of cast shadows and highlights on it as well and a few more greys. 4) You know your trade well and you've perfected it. NOW EXPAND ON IT ... if you dare. |

I never said it had to be emotional ... In fact, I'm not a big fan of emotional work myself. That's just one path you can take.
What I would really love to see you do ... is to try something more than just a profile shot. Umm, example of what you could do... 1) Make your own set of characters. Your good at drawing characters, so try to apply the technic you've garnered and apply them. If you can't think of new characters, try basing them off of people you know online or offline. 2) Give them character. This takes thought. 3) Put them in a scene together. 4) This is where the storytelling comes in. Whatever interaction happens between the two characters is a direct result of well ... their character. 5) Whatever happens can be exp Stuff like this takes practice and a technical mind alongside an artistic one, but you've already have that, so you're set. =P |

Originally posted by Alastor the Stylish This is where I disagree with you. Drawing with this much detail using any medium takes a great deal of skill. In fact, saying it takes "little real skill" is pretty much the exact opposite of the truth. I'm astonished that you actually seem to believe that this kind of thing is ever easy to do. It makes me think you're either are feigning to get a reaction or have never had any kind of experience with drawing at all. |

Originally posted by ZemOkay, I misspoke here. It would just seem to me that this style is easier than many others. My fault. I'm not trying to say that it takes no skill, but... Eh. I don't want to repeat myself at this point. Originally posted by Tarale Originally posted by Xkeeper Originally posted by maxAnd I was worried I might be losing it... Thanks, guys. Now you've made me worried about something else. That is, I really can't see what's so bad about what I said. Sure, it's an amazingly pessimistic and downright rude thing to say, but what the hell. It wasn't THAT bad. |
