You know, if you check out The Master Courses' creator's website, he's got some really nice character art scattered around. He really should know better than to use those palettes...

This one's my favourite.

Yeah, Boom's got plans to sort it out.

My idea was to divide the Hacks section into New Hacks and Featured Hacks, and allow the moderators to move the best hacks into Featured Hacks.

Smalls's idea was to leave them all together but put a or next to the best hacks.

Another idea was to just delete the crap ones.

I'd just have a special section devoted to the cream of the crap (as of now) and just reject crappy hacks from now on.

Yea that's always one thing that annoyed the hell out of me before, that and all the questions about how to do some of the simplest things. For every 1 useful thread, there were about 20 gay threads to bury it. I think the problem is that we seem to get a lot of really young people and some morons here who don't know what quality is (they're just like "omg lookie at what I did! I made a mario hack!"), and also if they have questions, they don't care to do a little research to figure out their question and would rather just post to try and get a quick answer (not sure how frequent the dumb questions are anymore, but it sure was bad a while back)

Blame Boom.dk. He's always been waaay too nice with n00bs, even before SMW Central was made. Due to this, the n00b "hackers" get laid back and submit crap after crap because Boom will host them all anyway.

If anyone dared submit a hack like those in here, they would very likely be de-approved and permabanned for eternity and a day.

Seriously, SMWC needs rules. Like, say, deleting hacks that do not meet quality standards and (temp?)banning the users who made them.

n00bs CAN learn, though. Even legoman showed signs of improvement, albeit at a snail's pace. Thing is, a good number of them won't or won't do so fast enough so it isn't worth the time it takes to be friendly to all idiots.

Nevertheless, many of the hacks at SMW Central are crappy, and it doesn't help that the rating system is kind of broken (most non-glitchy or screwy hacks get 5.0-7.0, and there are downvoters ahoy). It may cause tension, but I would suggest making it so that votes can be seen, and make it so people must leave a comment to vote. I just know a good number of votes are low ones left by idiots out of spite. Knowing which ones are doing this can help with differenting between ones doing it out of opinion and ones doing it just because they're dicks.

I'm totally for putting the bad hacks in a seperate section, but I say definitely don't delete them. Maybe some people actually like playing those hacks, and SMW Central shouldn't just get rid of them because most people say they're terrible. I agree about the rating system: pretty sad in its current state.

Even better, when you post your comment you choose a rating in various categories - levels, music, graphics, etc. Just don't make the fatal mistake so many of these systems make - allow rating fields to be left blank and comments to be posted without rating. It sucks when systems make you rate something that doesn't apply (game review sites making you rate the levels in Electroplankton or the music in Duke Nukem 64), or make you add a rating with every post (lololol extension database), throwing off the ratings.

Hacks rated 7-8
Hacks rated 9-10

Of course, you guys do seem to be right on the voting stuff. So maybe it should be the Mod's/Admin's rating choice.

I definitely agree that something there needs to change, but at least having a place to upload any and all hacks is a good thing. Even the truly bad hacks may have a few good ideas. though obviously not many are going to want to have to deal with them.

One of the bigger problems, as I see it, is that there really isn't much of a good way to really tell which ones are truly good and which are terrible under the current system and really sort accordingly - the current voting system isn't very useful. Sorting by rating doesn't really help me much in that regard. The fact that currently Super Demo World isn't even in the top 5, and that nearly all hacks fall between 5 and 6.5 show that this really isn'ta good system of ratings.

One other thing I'd like to see is a seperation between full games and demos. Demos are nice, but I think they should be organized and rated seperately from completed hacks.

Though I have to say, the highlights I'm seeing here make me feel a LITTLE better about my own current levels in my "nowhere near demo ready" work in progress.

Perhaps a some kind of a voting system, such as in Newgrounds?
Before the Hack could make it to the portal, a certain amount of members would vote on it on rating 1 - 10, and if it reached over a certain score, it'd make it through.

Sounds good, yes, no?

EXACTLY! Look at lego's first hack, Wirtual Mission I think it was? Anyway, it was fucking atrocious. But the last hack he released here before getting banned was, while not great, quite playable, and more worthy of constructive criticism instead of outright lulz.

Everyone can improve, it's just that we're either too nice or too nasty. I'm not sure what the happy medium would be, though.

Well, this could take a very long time, and there's still the problem of what to do if a hack doesn't make it through. Deleting it would be bad. Also, this is giving the decision to only a few people, and I don't really like that idea.

I think the current system is okay, but with some changes to the ratings system as have been mentioned before and a better way to sort through the hacks, it could be greatly improved on.

That's what I thought as well, but I must admit that I'm quite fed up with all that crap posted in our forums and all those ugly hacks.

Too nice would just letting them do whatever they want to without caring, too nasty would be not letting them do anything at all. The medium could be where we are rather strict, but at least give good, constructive criticism, ideas to improvement, etc. I know that's what you're all sick of because it takes so long for them to show any progress.

I know that I've been way too nice with n00bs and I kind of regret it. I still think, however, that the n00b forum was a good idea so they can help eachother instead of us having to answer the same questions all the time.

I like the star idea, but Raccoon Sam's seems very good, as well. I think that I will split hacks into 2 sections, though. On approval hacks should be sorted as either hacks that you actually won't die from playing or utter crap. Then we might need more hack moderators because it would be required to at least play the hacks before deciding.

I dunno, but I totally agree that we've been overrun by shit.
