Okay,

Oh one of my computers, I've recently been getting that error message on boot-up that the operating system cannot be found within the hard drive. There is indeed an operating system in there (WIN XP). Sometimes during boot-up, the operating system may load or may not load. I'm just wondering what could be causing this ... To my knowledge, the hard drive is old and perhaps I'd need a new one, but I am not sure ...

Anyone know of what to do?

uh-oh. my best guess is that your computer'd drive needs replacing... that only happens for me when there really isn't an OS available...

Yeah. I thought so as well and found it quite confusing on why I got the error in the beginning. Bleh. I guess I'll have to get a new one, heh. Probably would anyway, because the partition loads up correctly and such. It just loads whenever it wants to or not.

Before buying a new hard drive, I'd recommend running diagnostic tools from the manufacturer of your hard drive. If your drive checks out okay, then it may be other things that are causing this problem.

My friend has a computer that he hadn't used in a long time, so when he booted it up one day, it wouldn't work. I'm not sure of the problem exactly, but I think it would mean getting a new hard drive or reinstalling an OS. Call Geek Squad or something. They may have the answer.

The bootloader can be broken too, the first thing the BIOS look after when it's done is a bootloader. Most modern OS's looks for one on the removable medias first, then with the HD. So you would just need to reinstall the bootloader, unless the HD have crashed.

Try booting from your OS cd (if it doesn't boot automatically, try pressing F2 or F12 while the computer is starting). You might be able to reinstall the OS instead of buying a new hard drive

Uh. This topic is over two months old, and his problem has most likely been resolved.

Large bumps are bad, k?
