This thing was actually first released to the public back on June 25, 2006, but I wanted to wait to reveal it here at Acmlm's Board at the same time VL-Tone released the first version of his Super Mario 64 editor. Well, we all know how that ended up. Here's my contribution:

Current Version: 1.0.2
F-Zero Execution Project - F-Zero X (Version 1.0.2)

Microsoft Visual Basic 6 Runtime
The VB6 runtime is only a necessity for older computers (like, Win98 SE and older), so you may or may not need it.

In The Bundle

-Editor Software
-Sample Textures Dump
-Beta Tester-Made Courses
-Importable Text Courses from F-Zero X and Expansion Kit
-No ROMs. You don't need 'em, but you can use 'em.

IMPORTANT

This thing uses some weird memory management, since it was written in VB. If you don't have ample system and video memory to support everything it's trying to do, you may very well get a fatal error. Save your work early and often.

WORTHY OF MENTION

There are no future plans for this editor. This is it. Unless the guys at MFO become seriously injured from its use, I won't be updating it. Do not report any bugs unless they're good ones. Do not ask for additional features, for there will be none.

And above all, read the help files.

no, not really. I dunno what f zero is but ill wager that it cant be better then super mario 64
...I didn't really have much of a mind to present this at all. However, with stuff like this...

[regarding the F-Zero X editor] wasnt it sopposed to come out like 2 weeks ago? I can see the mario one ebing held back but wtf is up with this particular hack? Im calling bullshit on this one boys just like its creator.
...well, I just couldn't resist. Consider us (me and Acmlm's Board) neutral.

Like I mentioned earlier, this was originally planned to be released along side VL-Tone's Super Mario 64 editor. I wanted it to be something like "the day the N64 was edited." He kept throwing out dates, like June 21, June 25, prior to September 29, etc... Each of which he has missed. While I am not accusing him of wrongdoing, I'm through with waiting, so I'm posting this here.

Enjoy the world's first level editor for an N64 game. And I speak from experience: It's a sufficient replacement for those who don't have the N64DD and Expansion Kit.

Ahh fantastic. F-Zero X is my favourite N64 game, and not getting the DD version really upset me at the time.

Thanks for this. I'll try and make something outstanding with it!

I had this when it first came out, but then unfortunately lost it.

It is a truely awesome editor. Now only if I had some actual track designing skill...

This is pure awesomeness wrapped up in a VB program. Great work, Guy--I'm glad you decided to release it despite the criticism and setbacks you faced.

Are you going to submit it to acmlm.org too?

Not planning on submitting it to Acmlm.org, but I see no reason why it can't be in their library. It's up to the Acmlm authority whether or not they want this there. It's free game. I don't care who takes it.

The only one that comes to mind is F-Zero DXP by Dave Phaneuf.

You can't do hacks the same way with N64 titles because they encompass so many different versions and formats of a game. F-Zero X alone has six major ROM variants that this editor supports, and IPS doesn't cover that kind of a scope.

This editor looks very nice, but I have trouble making it run properly.
The program kinda starts up and only shows a small portion of it. Creating a new track from the File menu doesn't seem to do anything, except showing the question if I really want to create a new one.
As in the help file stated, the program doesn't need a ROM to run. So I can create tracks with the program itself, when I'm done simply open up a F-Zero X ROM via File menu and patch the changes to it ?
As for the game itself: Which file endings does the editor accept, as my F-Zero ROM ends with .rom ?
I am running Windows XP SP2 with the most recent updates, I even downloaded the VB 6 runtimes, installed them - made a reboot - but still I cannot get the program to work.

System specs:
AMD XP 2800+
GeForceMX4000 with 128 MB of VRAM
512 MB DDR-RAM

What did I miss to do - in order to get the editor working ?
Do I simply have to find a proper ROM with file ending n64 or something similar ?

To answer your first question, here's an excerpt from the Help files:

[From the Contents page]
When you first launch the program, only a menu bar will be provided to you. You will need to activate windows manually for content to be displayed on-screen. Internally, all editing is done behind-the-scenes, so no window is required to be present at any given time. This gives you more control over how your editing environment is configured.

To answer your second question, here is an excerpt from the Help files:

[From the File Menu page]
Save As prompts you to give a name for a .fzep file to be created using the course data currently being used within the editor software.

[From the Patch to ROM Window page]
The Patch to ROM Window allows you to patch .fzep files to a valid ROM file for use in other applications.

To answer your third question, here is an excerpt from the Help files:

[From the Patch to ROM window]
This button selects a *.*64 file and will accept it if it is determined to be a valid F-Zero X ROM.

The moral of today's story is: read the help files.

I hear ya. If somebody made a level editor for F-Zero X, I'm sure even you could do it!
