According to the October issue of Newtype (Japan) (On sale September 10), four new Evangelion movies are in the works. The four movies will include a prequel, a mid-series movie, a sequel and a "final" movie. The prequel movie is due out early summer 2007.

While the new story will be set during the same time frame as the original TV series, Newtype states that it will be an entirely new project, not be a remake or improvement of any sort. Newtype also mentions that viewers will not need to have already seen previous Evangelion material in order to understand and enjoy the new movies.

Hideaki Anno will write the scenario for the first movie and will be the general director and manager for the entire project. Kazuya Tsurumaki will direct the movies while Yoshiyuki Sadamoto will provide character designs and Ikuto Yamashita will provide mechanical designs. Shinji Higuchi will provide storyboards for the first movie.

Khara, a new studio that shares office space with Gainax, was recently set up and is seeking production staff to work on Anno's new project.


So, whad'ya think? Is this gonna be just another mashing of scenes from the television show together? Will they make one of the movies based on the 'Girlfriend of Steel' game? Will the sequel finally answer all the questions End of Evangelion left?

I'm excited for this idea.

I'm a fan of the series and even though it has its quirks and faults, it was still a nice watch.

As for the movies, it perks my interest.

I seriously need to watch the series again. I miss it so much. Someone stole my boxset of it.

I'm interested, but I'll reserve any judgement until it's all done, of course. I hope that it turns out good, but I'm not exactly all that hopeful....

I dunno, reminds me a bit of another series of mine I like that has recently started producing a lot of prequels and sequels and whatnot... And I was not overly impressed with Advent Children.

Yea I heard about this a couple of weeks back. Sounds pretty suck to me. Not really intriguing or necessary in the least. Begs the question: "Is Gainax losing money?"

I hear you on the "Intriguing" thing -- Evangelion did cover all of the storyline very well. It stikes me as very complete as it is. It doesn't need a prequel. It doesn't seem like there's much of the story to tell that hasn't already been told...

It might be entertaining, and I'm kinda interested out of curiosity, but considering how complete the original series is.... I have to wonder where they're going to go with things...? What ground they have left to cover??

Not so much cover as in, simplfying the answers for people to understand.

Also, they are basically trying to squeeze as much possible out of the Evangelion franchise and universe.


Like I said previously. I'm excited on the sheer fact that it is concerning Evangelion. If it sucks, it sucks, if not, then good for them.

I'm just interested in the inclusion of a sequel, really. I understood what was happening in the EoE perfectly fine, but as to the end... well, I've drawn my own conclusions, but some officialness supporting what happens would be nice.

It's good that that's a fucking lie though. Go watch Gunbuster instead, it's something Gainax actually did right.
Also, I think I need to grab the last 2-3 eps of EVA or something to understand what people are really whining about, up to v10 of the manga and what I've seen of End of Eva in SRWA3 it's just strange and with a few unanswered questions lying around. They did the question answering thing for Gunbuster with Diebuster, so maybe they're planning on doing it with these movies. Look forward to it .

The Thumbnail Theater versions (24, 25, 26) should tell you pretty much everything you need to know. And they (especially 26) make a lot more sense than the actual show did.

And once you're done with that, watch also the following:
Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou 25 (We caught up to the manga and ran out of plot, so boring dream sequence GO!)
Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou 26 (Let's have a narrator ramble on about nothing in particular over shots of nothing in particular, then recap to fill up space)

And, the crown jewel of the Gainax suckfest, Mahoromatic ~Something More Beautiful~ episode 14 (Instead of having a touching story about Suguru moving on with his life after losing someone he cared about, let's go to the future and turn him into an ANGSTY HALF-CYBORG SAMURAI BOUNTY HUNTER! THAT'LL BE SO COOL!!! Even if it has nothing to do with the rest of the series and plays out like an extremely bad fanfic, but hey, who cares about that, right?)

Either this is going to be completely awesome or it's going to suck horribly. There is no inbetween about it. I'm pretty excited for this. It will probably be one of the few movies I see in theaters.

See, I still can't help but view this with the same (later, justified) suspicion with which I viewed the news of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.

I wonder how much it's going to be pandering to the fankiddies. With Anno, it could go either way....
