Was there a spambot convention here recently? That's a lot of bots.

If you mean the top posts within a hour during the spree, I've actually seen 723, and that was already a few minutes after the spree ended

Yeah, I noticed a sudden jump in spambot count on some days. It's normal and you won't have to care. (last month it was only at 100, so it isn't a big increase).

...seems like message board spambots are getting popular. Or they just happen to find us better now.

Well, I saw them on alot of guestbooks (though that concept got old in 1998 already). Intresting to note that we don't use captcha, and yet the spambots can't get through our protection.

How do they even work? They can't possibly have unique code in them for Acmlm's, can they?

They have to know the URL and field names for registering and posting, which would be different on other board systems, so I'd say they do run a specialized code for here ... of course, they'd only check once and never bother to update, just like email spammers will still send crap to old emails you don't use anymore (or might not even exist)

They look around the internet for message boards (from a list probably), register, and spam. The spambots always filling in a home page is what gets them automatically banned.

Sure they can, but most programmers don't care about one board when there are tons of other ones around.

I think most of the time they look for commonly-used field names like title, post, etc and fill things in automatically. That's why you see a lot of bots doing dumb things like putting their subject in the Custom Thread Icon field or using BBcode that doesn't work here.

Zcf was attacked by spambots a month ago. About 100 accounts had been registered.

Fortunately, a simple query wiped every single one of them.

We could make some additional check that bans a user if their first post contains BBcode. True it might cause some false positives, but I yet have to see a serious member whoose first post contains BBcode... that we don't use. :/

Yeah, but I was unaware that the Acmlmboard was popular enough to even warrant a programmers time to build into a spambot.

We aren't really. Most of them (bots) are generic enough that you can just change a few variables and they work with any random board.

Wouldn't it be fun to go to an online gambling site, register, and say "Hey! I just got a shot at playing this new hack of Super Mario World on the latest version of ZSNES for Windows!!!! If you wanna try this out yourself, you can come here and play as long as you want for FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"?

I guess the bots can figure it out by looking for input fields and textarea boxes, and common input names ... but they still have to find the page for posting, trying every link wouldn't work too well

I wonder if there's a way to confuse them by using random meaningless names or switching them around ... or maybe if you use the invisible field trick for posting too, in case they don't get fooled when registering ... I also noticed they've posted polls that don't make much sense
