Cirvante goes to a school in Puerto Rico. That tells you all you need to know right there. XD
Danielle: Well, there's only one solution to that. Quit something. XD |

Ha ha... Bored?
Hardly.... today has been horrifically busy, and one of those days where everyone is in a foul mood. I'm not bored. I'm using the board as escapism |

My day was HORRIBLE too, Taryn. I woulda posted about it, but I was so drained that I went to bed at 6:30 instead.
It was general registration day at school. I've NEVER seen it like this before. We have about 8million displaced students this fall. Highest enrollment ever... by far. Yuck. I haven't been in school since last winter so I had to re enroll. Before doing that I went to see a few advisors. My major program (geology) got dropped and is no longer able to be completed. I had to pick a new one, so I wanted to have a game plan before I dropped money to enroll. So I sat down with a Dr. who reminded me of my ex g/f's dad. I said as much. He knows them. Apparently everyone says that. Anyway... I chose environmental science because almost every single hour I have counts for the program and those that don't all fall under directed electives, so that's finished and I have a minor in geology. I went to enroll, which took ages even though I was alone in there. They have a gorgeous new building which I had to find Then I went to the registrar to make sure everything was ok. They said I was clear to register and had no holds. Groovy. I went and got advised for real, and amazingly got exactly the classes I wanted and managed to have a three day week. Everything had at least 3 seats open. Cool. I went home to register (I was with my bro and he had been done for a while.) Can't register. Holds on my account. WTF? I had to wait an hour because it turned 12 and all the offices closed for lunch. Afterward I drove BACK to school, chased people down, and went to get the hold removed. They sent me to pay a lab fee for a lab I didn't take last year. When I got there I was told they no longer take money there, that is done on main campus. asdgfrthgergsgasd. Luckily thier dept. head walked in right about then and came to my rescue. He just deleted the damn thing altogether. Woot. They were nice. I sat down on thier comp to register. Wouldn't you know my classes were filled? I then had to spend the next 3.5 hours waiting to see people and calling the office and figuring out how I was actually going to PAY for school. My anxiety kicked in really badly and I almost had a bad attack. I called my ex and she left class (she's currently in session at LSU) and I swear I wouldn't have lasted the day if she hadn't talked me trhough it. I finally got seats added to my stats class and got into my biology and lab. The computer won't let me have soil science because it wants me to have taken the third chemistry first. Bah. I had soil stuff in geology classes, and chem as well. I had to run BACK to forestry to find the teacher, but he wasn't in. I'll have to get his sig. tomorrow I guess. Meanwhile I took a bs class to complete full time registration. So it's 4:30. They close at 5. I went downstairs to pay (I had a check) and OMG. I've never seen anything like it here before. There were at least 75 people in queue for fee adjustment and whatnot. I lucked out and they didn't try to dick me with an exp I then got online to pay the remaining balance on my card. Done. Right? Wrong, the girl didn't key in my check payment before purge. ZSADgasgq. But there was someone still up there, thankfully. I had my reciept so they had to fix my schedule. Long day. I hate registration. Woulda been nice if I had still been enrolled and eligible for early reg. |

...You would think that these schools would try to limit the crush by using some form of online registration. Even if it's only X number of people a day.

I don't know how the whole registration thing works, but yeah, I'd imagine they'd offer alternative ways to do things too (such as online).

I don't think the universities up here offer in-person registration anymore. Maybe for special cases but I'd guess that 99% of all students do it online (or on a computer at the university in a worst-case scenario).
I remember seeing news stories several years ago about the CHAOS that results with in-person registration. |

You start really looking into the schools. Try to find people to talk to that go, either on the net or through people you know. You could probably even call the university and have them set you up with the number for thier SGA, who could help you with that. Visit the campuses if at all possible.
If you have any particular field of study in mind, find out about that program at each school. Apply to at least three of them. Be sure to apply for scholarships, because not all schools apply you for them automatically. That made the difference for me being offered a full ride at UT Dallas and not one at UT Arlington. I didn't go to Dallas because I didn't wanna move to the city by myself and they didn't focus on the programs I wanted... And try to apply for scholarships as early as possible. Before Spring is over, surely. I'd apply in January or February. If the schools are in state, do your federal and state student aid stuff right at the beginning of the year too. |

Riku: There's just a teeny tiny bit more to it than that.
Kas: Hmm... Well I do know what I want to study, for the most part, and that's helped me narrow down the schools I'm going to apply to. I'm definitely going to apply for scholarships, as well as a Cal State grant. A few of the campuses are close, so I should try and visit them. But like... as for the actual application process, when should I start/how long does it take/how do I do that? |

Well, if you know you are going to be applying to a particular school, either write their admissions department asking to be sent an application or, in the case that the school is close enough to visit, simply pop in at the admissions office and ask for one. Either way, I would suggest that you at the very least get your applications as soon as possible, even if you don't fill them out at this very moment.
As for how long each application takes...well, that depends on the application itself. Some schools offer online applications, which makes submitting your application much easier (and which I would suggest if possible). Many colleges require at least one essay to be submitted with their application, and some require several, so it's up to you how long you wait to start writing. I had the unfortunate experience last year of having to write about 15 essays over my Christmas break just so I could submit all of my applications by their deadlines; I suggest you don't do that. Scholarships are a completely different matter: many of the more lucrative and competitive scholarships have early (January or earlier) deadlines, so I suggest that if you are aiming to apply for scholarships that you start looking for and applying to relevant scholarships now. Even if you think you will have enough money to pay for college without outside scholarships, a little extra cash never hurt anyone. I'm sure you likely already know where to look for scholarships, but if you haven't already check out FastWeb and the College Board for lots of scholarships. |

I'd be looking at getting your applications as soon as possible (ie, now) and having a good read through them. (as mentioned above)
Generally considering we're nearing the end of the year, I'd also imagine that it would be fairly prudent to submit said applications as soon as you can too. I know that schools here are doing all of their organisational stuff for next year right about now, so I'd imagine that it's a good time to start organising that stuff for schools there too. |

I guess I have to start looking for colleges soon. High school goes by fast! Seems like yesterday I was getting my freshman pictures made, and now I'm a junior. |
