| I'm getting a SuSE distro soon (I very much hope) for this laptop PC. It's an HP Pavillon Entertainment Notebook. Sysinfo is here:
http://board.acmlm.org/thread.php?id=7776 I want linux for a number of reasons. I used to be pretty geeky about computers, and I miss that whole RTFM mentality. And I've always wanted to get into unix-like workings. I also want to learn and write in a programming language in was that manipulate linux systems, though at the moment I don't know what; what I do know is that it's got to be right up linux's alley, and I'm thinking medium level, maybe slightly low level language. Maybe just under C, but maybe C or C-esque as well (before this, I'll probably try my best to grok linux's command line programs. I'm sure that's alot of work itself. I hope it's more exciting than batch). I have two outstanding problems at the moment. The first is I'm planning on partitioning C to give the kernel 15GB NTFS, but I don't know how 'good' that is. I'll want when all is said to done, at least 5 gigs to play with. The other NTFS is XP of course; I've got a lot of stuff I want to keep around, including my huge amount of MP3s, CS 1.6, Warcraft III, etc. As I get more into linux it'll probably assimilate more and more of my hard drive over time. I'm talking about this because the problem is I don't know if 15GB is enough at the start, and how easy it is to compact and expand NFTS through SuSE's partitioning program. Second problem's obvious: what's it like running linux on a laptop? What sort of problems am I going to run into? Does anyone have any experience? |

| Well first off, most linux drivers for integrated video chipsets seem to suck. If you're not interested in 3d gaming (or perhaps 2d with the extended opengl usagery) then ignore this line
A 15gb NTFS partition for Windows is more than enough IMO. I've settled with a smaller 6gb partition for that without a problem. If you're looking to put all of your data in the EXT2/3 filesystem you may want to consider using this for Windows. I've never tried it mainly because it refuses to install in xp x64. If you just want to simply read/copy files from the ext3 partition you could use this. A typical linux installation demands at least 3gb of space usually. (edited by leileilol on 09-05-06 01:21 AM) |

| An update:
My SuSE came in, and I partitioned windows off -- it still takes about 60% of my HD, a thing I want until I transfer my music over to linux; but I won't do that until I can get winamp over. My thing is now, I've a wireless internet card (T-mobile) whose installation and running is a windows thing. I need to find a way to get an internet connection on it. Also, I'll be going in Spain in a month for the next two years, so I'm more looking for versatile suggestions, and experiences and sorts relating to this. |
