Before, around 1999 when i really got into communities(sp?), things were so much better, the people did not talk like AOLn00bs all the time, Most of IRC was actually quite awesome back then. but nowadays, people are so stupid on the internet, wherever you go there is always people who find idiocy to be the highest form of comedy. sure, i like it too. in small dosages.
Man, Back then i used to have so much more fun on the internetz. wonder what happened. Back then, people were alot nicer. i know. because i was more than annoyance at that time, and if it hadn't been for them nice people on the internet, im pretty sure i wouldn't be typin' even half of this right now. I mean, newbies nowadays are so agressive. I havn't met many newbs who are um... nice.., often, they just yell and try to flame other people who sometimes tries to help them, and i don't really know why most people have realized that flaming a n00bie hardly does any good for anyone else... Not putting all the blame on the newbies and the pure flamers of course! some oldbies should learn to respect the fact that the newbie needs to learn the ropes. But why, do they have to be so slow to learn nowadays? But of course, there are alot of exceptions. but it is still a massive amount of people with English as their native language who can't even type properly. I am no smart kid either truth to be told, but even tough English is my second language i can still say i am can atleast make myself understood. ; |

The Turkey in your layout brings me a strange, happy feeling of calmness. The internet however, pisses me off sometimes, but yeah it's all something you have to keep in check. Don't flame the n00bs unprovoked, but you still gotta show them what's what, especially if they disrespect quality people. I accidentally dug up a thread just today of somebody ripping on Neviksti, who I know is a smart fellow who helps out the zsnes team. Some newbie thought he'd pick a fight and call Neviksti overrated and a fool. People ran to his defense pretty quickly. Uncivilized behavior like that pisses me off, especially from a newbie. | |||

I know what you mean. The internet has no control these days. I know a lot of people who flame, spam, bitch, and explode.
Sometimes I wish IP ban would blow up their monitor. |

I get your point, Thayer, but I and several other people aren't just going to "get over it" because it really is annoying. I can tolerate typos and AOL-speak in chatrooms, but in message boards, where you have plenty of time to think, it just makes you look immature to rush a post in that way.
Yeah, internet bullies are pretty much like bullies in real life, but at least in real life they're easier to avoid and a lot less common. If someone's a bully in real life, they generally get strict punishments, like being fired, jail fines, and the like. But on the internet, the most we can do is ban them from one message board or chat room, which leaves them about 9999 left. As far as noobs go, I'm relatively forgiving, since it wasn't long ago that I was one. I can tolerate what some people consider stupid questions, but they should know better than to flame somebody they don't really even know. Ah well. If noobs had patience to read rules and regulations, and if everybody were nicer, the world would almost be perfect. But then we wouldn't need Walgreens. |

Its not like someone said "Oh fuck off" to me and I thought posting something like this would ease my problems about it.
It's about a more agressive and careless attitude towards eachother nowadays on most communities. |

I'm from five years ago, long before any of this happens, and for all I care, it's still five years ago with how I treat the internet, although I don't ignore the passage of time.
N00bs are just to be ignored, plain and simple. Out of sight, out of mind. And that includes just use of bans and kicks and akills and stuff to make them go away. |

The only problem is filtering the NEWBIES from the outright NOOBS. People sometimes don't realize those are totally different nouns (note: That comment was not directed at the topic creator or anyone else. It was a general statement). Newbies have promise; they want to learn and be productive. If they're shunned, they can turn into noobs, flaming and spamming randomly.
Then, there are the people who start off as noobs. Sigh... |

There's a field of science called human geography* that studies how geography effects cultures. There's obvious stuff, like how cultures will be more similar that are close to eachother, less similar if theres a mountain range between them, or much less similar if there is a major body of water between them. And less obvious stuff, like how all the cultures near easy-to-farm plants and big dumb animals thrived while the rest got screwed.
Any place you go on the internet is going to have its own culture. It's going to be determined in part by really subtle things that I'm not going to claim to understand. It took some random genious years to come up with the easy-farming-and-big-dumb-animals thing. But, more importantly to the point I'm going to eventually be getting at, there are the mountains and oceans. Acmlm's is a bit of an island. It doesn't link to much of anything at all, not all too much links to it. Zophars is like a non-neutral version of Switzerland**. At first logic, all the intelligent, interesting cultures on the internet are going to be linked to eachother. So, once you find one, you should find all of them. However, once a good number of intelligent, interesting cultures become linked together, the chances of at least one of them being easy to get to from a search engine become greater. Being hit by a search engine puts a lot of stress on an internet culture. Lots of new people means lots of slight changes in culture. And lots of random n00bs. So, the internet favors that intelligent, fun communities are fairly small. And, additionally, the life expectancy of an internet culture is bloody short. So, when your community dies, you'll make your way across other ones in the "region" until you exaust that "land mass". Then you'll be stuck back at a search engine. And anything you can find from there is something every lamer on the net can find just as easilly. The intelligent, fun communities are still out there. But good luck finding them. Post Scriptum: On the internet, unlike in the real world, people can be citizens of more than one place. I could be a major poster on a crochetting forum halfway across the internet and none of you would know it***. Somewhat interestingly, lots of people from the community tend to end up in the same places. I've run into Acmlmers at the IVAN forums and at KoL. I'm not going to start trying to understand -- or especially not start trying to explain -- what effect this has on internet culture. Theres an effect though, I assure you. Post Post Scriptum: For anyone who's new here, posts like this are why I can get away with being random and spammy when you can't. See, when your normal posts look somewhat like that, it's absolutely hilarious when you suddenly turn around and make a two word post. *If I got the wrong name for the field, go along with it. **Historically, if Switzerland was less neutral and badass, it'd probably be a bit of a wasteland from all the wars that went through it, because it's right next to everything. Historically, Zophars is neither so neutral nor so badass, and right next to everything. Thus, it's not so much of a surprise that Zophars is a wasteland. ***I'm not. I wouldn't blow my cover like that, sheesh. (edited by Squash Monster on 12-10-05 11:00 PM) |

Originally posted by Danielle so, if there's e-penis's can there be e-vagina's, and if so could we have e-intercourse with our e-genitals. Just a thought... then people could go around and be like "I just lost my e-virginity. I'm not gonna die an e-virgin after all." <- Wow, I almost want to go hang myself for all that nonsense. As for the internet, once you stop caring about what other people think, then it gets better... face it there are always gonna be people who hate you... life, internet, hell, you name it. Just get used to it. Now to go find my daily dosage of explicit materials... adios. |

The problem is simple: It's too easy to get online now. It used to be that you had to know a thing or two, but now any 11-year-old can just click the 'Internet' icon. This was probably the best feature of DOS - people who were too dumb to use it only asked for help once.
[edit] Also, people can afford computers now. (edited by HyperHacker on 12-12-05 08:54 PM) |
