Hey, that "Product Activation" thing is an awesome idea. You know why? Because that means software developers are able to exert control over how their technologies are used.
Brilliant! Together, Kawa, you and I will further my dream of removing the Public Domain once and for all! BWAHAHA! Then the only thing left will be corporately-controlled commerce! The public won't have any say in the matter! BWAHAHA again! You, Kyoufu Kawa, are one of the most delightfully evil people I've ever met. Well done. Once they find out you're manipulating them with illegal activities in the first place, it will already be too late. Excellent scheme you've come up with. |

I take it you don't like it then?

I'm one of those open-source junkies, so I have a natural predisposition to disliking the manipulation of fair use.
Though I do warn you: The Nintendo GBA and everything in it (particularly the music engine coded into the system's BIOS) is protected under U.S. and international copyright laws. Of them, Title 17, Chapter 13, Section 1309 states the following two regulations:
While ROM hacking in itself is not illegal, it does fit the description of an infringing article defined in subsection (e) by being a design copied from another design protected under the copyright law. Releasing hacks and utilities to the public domain is not illegal. However, requiring a registration falls under the category of "for use in trade" as documented in subsection (a). Since, as mentioned before, the utility qualifies as an infringing article, and since, as just mentioned, the registration counts as use in trade, releasing the utility under both conditions constitues a legal copyright infringement. As such, the Entertainment Software Association has been given executive authority in hundreds of countries around the world to enforce criminal prosecution in regards to international copyright laws (which is why the U.S. law I posted here is a threat). If you include this registration feature, Kawa, you're exposing yourself to potential criminal prosecution to the fullest extent of the law... any law that's applicable in international copyrights. |

Excuse me while I laugh at laws.
But really, if the majority says I should remove the lock, I will. |

I won't use your program (simply because I'm not into GBA hacking), but I still don't think that lock is necessary. Just make your program userfriendly enough, and well documented if necessary, and things should be fine... A couple of n00bs are likely to ask for help once in a while, but that's no big deal... It won't change the face of earth or anything. It's not like you have to answer to such topics either.

Okay. I'll go remove the lock right after I post this, but don't say I didn't warn you all...
*Kyoufu Kawa loads up VB. Edit: Okay. Lock's out. Saved 4 kb. Can we go back to the threads original topic now? (edited by Kyoufu Kawa on 12-10-05 05:05 PM) |

Originally posted by BGNG Music engine isn't coded into the bios. Sappy, or to be mor eprecise, m4a, is an engine of its own, alone, and is in no way built in to the BIOS. The fact that the bios's loading sound uses the engine is entirely coincidental--the engine can't be accessed from this in the game. |

It certainly sounds like a great utility, and hopefully we'll see more GBA tools to come (As far as I know, there's not much outside the Pokemon games, but I've been out of the loop for awhile)..

Kawa: On another side note, while fucking around with the engine earlier today, I realised that rythm kit pan and square ch1's sweep share..or rather, are both stored to, the 4th bye of the 0xC patch data. Sweep is 00-7F, pan is 80 and beyond ranging from -64 to 63. Setting both probably causes an error in mks4agb.ini, I havn't tried it and really don't care to. But yeah, multi-functional byte, just thought I'd throw that out there for you incase your code dosn't emulate it yet. (I thought Bouche's original code was slightly inaccurate at handling the CGB square channels in the original Sappy 1 ) (edited by Keitaro on 12-10-05 06:08 PM) |

Thank you. I'll have to re-read that post a couple times when I start caring about it again. I'm not using the original Sappy 1 code tho, so maybe it's already done (better).

It sounded elitest, but the locking function was simply for the hacking parts. Any user can still use Sappy 2005 to play the music either way. It solved many problems too, users simply had to contact Kawa or others well known in using the program, if they seemed compitent enough to use it, they got the code, otherwise they may risk not just "making crappy music hacks", but ruining their own roms, which they may not of backed up and such.

People release crappy music hacks? Here's a solution:
DON'T PLAY THEM (pity I missed the bitching party. however this helpful advice can be applied to many things, such as KKK mario hacks and other such bullshit, esp. "glitch mario" lolloolloolo.) (edited by Xkeeper on 12-11-05 03:16 PM) |

...if I had read mks4agb.ini, it actualy says that panpot is disabled when sc1dt??'s sweep is activated. wow, I'm slow but yeah...still something to keep in mind, in case the code only supports sweeep/pan/sweep on chanels besides sc1dt??/etc..since the byte has multiple purposes outside of sweep (edited by Keitaro on 12-11-05 06:56 PM) |
