Question: why is it that everyone here seems to love TASes humanly done speedruns? I am not amused with this run. All it is is a representation of what can be done if a player had superhuman reaction time and knowledge of all sorts of tricks. Nobody seems to pay any attention to that part and just scream an implication that, "This is better than other runs because it's faster." while completely ignoring humanly done runs. | |||

Originally posted by asdf You all missed the whole point of this -- the commentary on the run. Seriously. And asdf, you seem to think we only like TASes? I've watched quite a few "human" speedruns, and I find them incredible in how fast a human can play sometimes. However, TASing usually shows things that simply cannot be done without absoloute perfection in playing (note, however, that the runs may not be perfect themselves). This run just showed me a lot of bugs that made me go "What the holy fuck?", which I won't find in a speedrun. Bugs/glitches like this generally aren't allowed there Next time, please read the post that goes with the thread |

Originally posted by Fire Alexa I did read the post that goes with the thread. Thing is, more bugs and glitches are permitted on the speed run site than one might think. In addition, most of those bugs featured there ARE, in fact, humanely possible. Some of those can be seen in TSA's thread on SDA. In fact, he knows of some glitches that are not done there. Originally posted by Fire Alexa Well, I rarely see people mention normal speed runs here. I am fully aware that there are people who enjoy them, but they are rarely brought to attention. I do enjoy TASes from time to time, though. I guess what I just mentioned is what I dislike the most. Another thing: that was more of a test run. There are some things that do waste time in there (IE: turning around just to backwalk for one second, when it'd be faster just to continue rolling). That really doesn't affect my opinion on it, though. There is already talks of improvement. I did download the run out of curiosity though, but I haven't gotten around to watching it yet. First note: A few days ago, I tried watching this and got bored (I never played OoT, so I can't really tell what's amazing). Then I watched it with the commentary by JXQ, and I was laughing a lot.... that's the difference it makes
Second note: I like TASes because it shows what's possible, though normal speedruns are fun too. Watching a real person perform 16-stars in SM64 is awesome, as well as the Metroid Prime runs. Really, I'm not split between the real-speedruns and the TASes, I enjoy what's enjoyable (and frankly, it's more often TASes doing that rather than real speedruns). Highly unrelated note: Why is it so hard to believe that the Zelda OoT engine is based on Super Mario 64? That's what the developers say, but OoT looks like much superior quality. Although I haven't watched this (I'm interested though) yet, I just have to say I'm in the same boat as FreeDOS here in terms of how I enjoy both TAS's and normal speedruns.
Either way, I think its interesting to watch a game I've played before beaten so quickly, tricks revealed, and whatnot. TAS'd or not. Some of pure humanly ones I've always enjoyed are the Super Metroid runs, probably because I've gotten good at running through that game myself (I think my best run clocked in at 50 minutes, with the game time shown at the end. After doing it I just found it quite hard to believe how the smallest things could result in a 43~ speedrun). I'll definitely check this video out tonight though. There was really only ever one speedrun I enjoyed. [sonic advance 2; because it was insanely ZOOM]
the idea of a commentary is always good, but OoT sucked so bad I could not possibly sit there and waste hours watching someone play through it |

I dislike watching OoT too, but the commentary makes it worth it.
So very, very worth it. |

I would have to disagree on that.
It's only a small 37mb for the comentary. And there is that emulator movie file that is small. So |

Pretty good, definately great at times. The guy is a little weird, but whatever.
I actually had the idea that people should do voice commentaries for speed runs, but more as a commentary on strategy and the why of things and not so much comedy. It works pretty well, though. And I agree about his sentiments about OoT. I don't want to start a huge fued, so it's in spoilers: Spoiler: If I had a list of "Most Overrated Games," OoT would be #1 or #2, maybe tied with FF7. Not because it's a bad game, but because it's only above average and many people quite literally profess a belief that it is THE single best game of all time. EDIT: Come to think of it, I actually enjoyed watching this speedrun, so that definately makes OoT #2 on the list. (edited by witeasprinwow on 08-18-06 10:29 PM) |

I only watched some of it (started at 1:30 AM last night ... so, got kind of tired) but it did seem pretty cool. The commentary was decent at times, but it was weird that they picked someone who hardly knew anything at all about the game. I think wite's idea of commentary would be more interesting, for most of it.
I honestly can't imagine just how much free time this guy had to perfect some of that. Walking backwards, very often ... and knowing exactly where he was going, when to backflip, etc. Jeeze. But I'd have to disagree with all the OoT hate. I can surely agree with everyone that would argue its basically another telling of LttP, but I still loved it. Probably just nostalgia, but overall I thought it was a great game. (And I loved Majora's Mask too!!! Uh oh. And, I hated Wind Waker. Oh, and Zelda 2 fucking rocked). |

Kicked so much ass it was I laughed the whole thing, and saw some pretty interesting shit... I coulda sworn I already posted in this thread though.... =\ Anyways, it's tough to sync, but doable. They should have a downloadable version pre-synced. God, I don't think I could have the patiance to make these movies =\ But I would love to make commentary for TAS movies, or even better! A skype 2-man commentary! Would be pretty sexy... (edited by ForeverFailing on 08-21-06 02:04 PM) |

I just finished watching the entire thing. The glitching was incredible (I especially liked where they blew open the dodongo's eyes with a pair of Bombchus, and I'm amused that you don't actually have to collect all six medallions to get to the final boss battle), but it would have been rather boring without the commentary, which brought back fond memories of watching friends play this game and making smart remarks the entire time. I like the commentator's sense of humor. All in all, a worthy use of an evening. (edited by Rydain on 08-22-06 11:57 PM) |

[makes mental note to get this among too many other things when I get cable]
See, there are reasons I have this site in my decent list of links in my bio. This is but one of them. I kinda figured this would get some notability soon about it but I didn't think it'd make it into the Crazy Forum. |
