Actually, the point was that Microsoft willingly agreed to provide the software and hardware that prevents people from China from having a full view of the internet, as well as any other freedom of speech.

If you ask me, they should be kicked out of America.

That's true. You can't get fined for not using common sense or for unethical business practices unless those things also happen to be illegal.

I'm not sure what you people are having so much trouble with about this.

Actually, that's not what I meant...

I say, Microsoft can't take away the right of an entire country to connect to the Internet, let alone a single user. They aren't a kind of network police, no matter how much they'd like to. Internet was not developed to be treated like simple merchandise...

What exactly goes wrong? And what incentive does Microsoft have to do such a thing to china, and why china? I highly doubt that given the amount of methods of communication we have on this planet, that all avenues of communication will give the exact same information...

Considering that China's Government has been rumered to say that they will assist North Korea should anything happen to their "little Brother." I can see why people could see MS as a US advantage over China. Especially with what North Korea has been up to. I'm not for or against anything here and I'm in the military. How something like this could be seen in many different lights is scary, but I'm certain that nothing will be done for the time being. I mean if someone can steal their way into a polital office then a computer firm can run a nation's network as a blantant sign of manuering for the sole purpose fesibly covering their home nation in return for a foavor or two. What concerns me, who's going to clean up the mess if it comes down to that?

Not take it away, restrict it to what the Chinese Government wants them to see. Nothing more.

END OF DISCUSSION. seriously, you guys need to stop whining about microsoft OBEYING LOCAL LAWS. Get mad at china, not microsoft, I don't know why this discussion is still going, really. Google does the same thing, it boasts that it doesn't censor, but they at the same time admit that they have to obey the laws of the country they're working in.

As for this whole internet nuetrality thing, it's just a bullshit conspiracy theory. Do you have any idea how dumb that is from a business standpoint? Yeah, let's piss off our customers by restricting the internet, so the minute something genuinely nuetral comes along/our competitors become neutral for the sake of competition, we'll be demolished. Now if internet service were a monopoly, then there would be something to worry about. But since there's competition pretty much everywhere, I don't see the issue being something that will realistically happen.

Zer0wned,

You're right, it is the end of the discussion, because it's been getting a little wild. I'm going to go ahead and close it.

EDIT: Reopened. Now play nicely.

So hold on here a second. Censoring websites is OK in another country, but when it comes to YOUR internet freedom you have something to say? What kind of hypocrisy is this?

We're not going to "free" the Chinese from their censorship. I don't care if we do have Jack Bauer on our side. It's up to the Chinese to revolt, protest, overthrow, cower, or whatever else they want to do. Microsoft isn't going to let censorship ruin a very lucrative deal for them.

You know something?

I don't even have to write new posts anymore. You keep going in circles, so I can just quote people that've already posted here. Of course, you're not listening at all, so I don't know why I bother.

personally, I think that sandrocklq's response fit as a reply a little better, but I guess mine works too

But a company should have the interest in human social justice to not trade with authoritarian dictatorships.

*sniiiip'd*

To me it seems that as of recent, more and more of these types of governmental power trips are not only weakening, but dissappearing as a whole anyway. The rate of exchange in knowledge empowers people more and more, even if in some places the information is censored on few topics. The issue enlies with china and its people, and about the people that wish to also step in and help. This is not about a business doing what it does, BUSINESS. I'm not gonna say that in any other variation again

Besides, as I see it, chinese citizens in a position of complete liberty will likely do themselves in. You know the whole population problem? Say they revolt and get complete democracy, yay. Know what's gonna happen after that, regardless of current overpopulation issues? They're guna fuck like RABBITS. There's a limit on children they can have right now, if that gets dropped and they're free to breed as they wish, things are going to get a lot worse. Most of china is in third world status, last thing areas like that ever need is MORE people. It may not be considered right by most people, but the government in place almost always has the country's best interests in mind, how they go about doing it is sometimes objectionable, or even counter-effective.

More of a half-assed attempt at justifying making sense of why china exercises that level of control than anything else.

EDIT: Plus Sign Abomination's got a point there ... Unnecessary part removed.

So, zer0wned.

There is this thing called ad hominem. Rom Maniac may have done it. But you really shouldn't either.
