Like I said in the staff forums, we already tried separating the ROM hacking forums in to basic and advanced forums, and it was nothing but a headache to users and to staff.

Well, that's just sucky. Might I ask what the problems were?

The thing is, I only think the approval idea will really work in the short-term, for the reason that you really want to bring in "fresh blood" to the forums (just without the stupidity) and I don't think this is particularly conducive to that.

So I'm wondering if there are any ideas for things on a more newbie-friendly way of doing things.

Advanced Hacking failed because there is no clear line as to what is advanced, and what is not.. Many people weren't sure which to post in, and in general, the forum was just ignored by the majority.. It just wasn't working, albeit it was sound enough an idea in theory.

As for this only being short term, perhaps.. But eh. The idea is to reject anyone who is too stupid to be there, and let in those who are genuinely new and wish to learn things.. I think that's fine, and although some idiots might still slip through, and some lazy but talented people might not register an application.. in the end, it is still going to be better off than it has been in the past.

And newbie friendly by the way, is a very nice thing to consider.. But this forum has existed a very long time now, we aren't exactly here (in the ROM hacking department at least) to cater to newcomers. That is not to say we reject them, or do not wish to help those who truly wish to advance in the field.. But, we're old enough now that we shouldn't have to outright cater to them and allow every tom, dick, and henry to walk in and ask the most grossly ignorant of things.. And no, I am not calling newcomers ignorant in general, but a LOT of people on the internet are ignorant, and they "just so happen" to be new too. Funny, that..

Anyway, all a newcomer has to do is make one post in the application forum, and so long as they have half a brain, they get right to post. (Remember, the forums can be viewed regardless, the application is just for posting rights..) It doesn't really seem like anyone has to go out of their way to do that, and the staff here aren't going to turn away anyone they feel might have some potential to them.. You just need half a brain to get through this process, which filters out all those dumbasses in one fell swoop.. In other words, I don't see this as newbie unfriendly, nor even if it were do I think we really need to cater to that any longer with all the problems it causes us.. No one is trying to be an elitest in the literal sense either, but quite frankly there are some really moronic people who don't deserve the time of day sometimes, and thus a system like this is really needed..

I have a few questions about this:
1: How will we know if we are accepted or denied?
2: How long does it usually take to accept/deny someone?

It usually does not take longer than a day or two, depends on the schedule of the admins and whatnot.

After you make a thread in this forum, you check back after a few hours or a day or two. You will know you have been approved by what an admin says in your thread. They will generally say "approved" or "rejected"

Also if you approved you will see this picture --> next to your name in the forum index. (Where it says who started what thread)

Okay. I already posted there, so... I'll wait until tomorrow, then I might bump it. Thanks. I thought that no one posting means "you're denied".

Bumping it isn't going to help you get accepted any faster. In fact, it'll just annoy us.

Oh, sorry. I read in the rules that after a while, you can bump the thread. Oh well. Since it annoys you, I promise not to do it.

Yeah, I'm surprised at some of the people who got in, but I think it's more of a "you get in if you can type coherently, and get kicked out if you prove to be a moron" system than "you look stupid, gtfo".

It's not so much "you look stupid, gtfo" as "I have prior experience with you, I know you're stupid, gtfo."

I was pretty lenient (lazy ) at first, yes, but now that I don't have a huge backlog of applications to process, I'm starting to feel more comfortable taking my time, going through a user's history (if any) and telling them what they need to improve, or why they aren't being allowed in.

Also, to those who still have any doubts about the system's fairness: so far, out of 74 applicants, I have only denied approval to two, and am still considering two others (and I doubt anyone is going to argue with the decisions I made in those cases). I would much rather let in a few too many "iffy" people and weed out the true idiots later than not give some socially awkward--yet determined--newbies a chance to shine.

You know, I'm actually a semi-active member of a board that does require that. It's awesome. Certainly more awesome than the flawed, flawed system in place now... I mean we're letting in anyone. Even timdevril got in.

...

I agree-- people are getting in who shouldn't be. I'd much rather visit a board with approval rules so strict not even I am allowed to post then one with approval rules so lax it's a pointless, arbitrary process.

I'd rather give a thousand socially awkward but determined newbies the b00t rather than let a couple total idiots in.

While I agree that extra security often makes things stupid, we should at least try this. Who knows, it might work. When something doesn't, you can always count on me, naysayers, to be the first to complain. I'm Glyph Phoenix. It's what I do.

My opinion might not mean much, but I think this is a pretty good idea, mostly because it's shaping up to be pretty easy to get in. It's not like people have to write a whole lot or put in a whole bunch of stuff. All they have to do is link people to some hacks or attempted hacks they've made and don't type like a retard. If this was really hard to get into, it would kind of suck. Mostly because I couldn't make my application stupid.

Alastor, Glyph Phoenix, yeah, I was kind of like "woah hey look at what this guy did that means I can afford to be stupid and still get in". It was great. Glyph Phoenix, if it was really really strict, someone would eventually post a topic about their SMW hack in ROM Hacking. This would defeat the purpose of the SMW forum and cause it to collapse upon itself. That's when it turns out XKeeper was using you the whole time to destroy the SMW forum and BMF was actually the protector of humanity after all. Then a huge floating tower shows up with a bunch of lame enemies that deal like 3 HP of damage. Then you fight XKeeper for a while and he turns invisible and falls through the ground. Then I guess you fight the last boss for no reason.

Okay what.

Thankfully, you don't make the decisions around here. Any forum which doesn't allow people to join is destined to die.

Say that again, heh. There's a few forums which do that which aren't dead. :p

I've seen too many forums ruined by idiots, this approval setup makes sense to me. A little lenient, but the idea appears centered around punishing idiocy rather than assuming it.

Pretty much. This system was more or less aimed at preventing people like Penio or HACK_LOVER99099 (etc.) from getting in, not from restricting it to people already well-versed in it.

Just show some damn initiative* and you'll get in, easily.

I believe because many people here visit ROM Hacking and staff didn't want to be bombarded with approval requests. Besides, the ROM Hacking forum is still smart enough to not need approval, but if intelligence in that forum sinks, it will need approval like in the original plan.

A few others and I whinged about it. Also, the "problems" are really only present in the other two forums anyways (yes, you do get a few moronic threads occasionally, but they aren't hard to ignore)
