For those not in the know, it's five days till the release of Madden NFL 2007. This is commonly reffered to as "Maddenoliday", and they set up a website just for celebrating it. (For those interested in seeing the player ratings, they are right here, use the "next" button at the bottom to scroll through each division and click on a team's name to see the roster and stats)

Maybe I'm asking the wrong crowd, but is anyone else as excited for this as I am? I have to get it for Gamecube because my PS2 is broke and I don't own an Xbox360. Here's to hoping it controls well.

My biggest complaint with last year was that the blocking AI was retarded, and to get effective blocking you basically had to have an extra hand to control the 2nd joystick to lead the blocker where you want him. This year you can actually control a lead blocker on the play, so if you are running it up the middle and more concerned about clearing a hole than controlling the RB, then you can actually do that this year.

Looking at the previews, though, it seems pretty obvious which blocker you are controlling, because a huge colored circle comes up underneath the guy pre-snap. I'm not sure if there is a "stealth" mode that doesn't make the circle appear... but there better be.

I'm one of the only people I know who is sad to see the QB vision cone go away. I actually liked the idea of having to look off / hold safeties, and having defensive backs cover based on where you looking. It needed some expanding and refining, but I thought it was a cool idea.

Also, as much as I am excited to play my Ravens, and a little bit the Redskins, I am super excited to play the Saints. Take a look at Reggie Bush's stats. He has over a 90 in every speed-related or evasion-related attribute, and an 87 in catching. His strength / pass block / break tackle sucks, but then you can just line him up as a reciever and have McCalister block for you. Or you can come out in a run formation and audible him into a WR spot to create mismatches in the defense. OR you can come out with Bush in the WR slot and then run the ball with McCalister when the defense is probably set for Cover 2. The possibilites are endless.

To head idiots off at the pass: Yes, I know each Madden is $50 for just a roster update and a couple new moves every year. You know what? I wouldn't have it any other way.

So here it is, the Madden thread. Share opinions, whine about the player ratings, talk shit, whatever you want.

This game is gonna kick ass. I love NCAA 07 and I'm sure I'll love Madden 07. Hopefully they'll still have the NFL Superstar mode like they did on Madden 06.

I don't think you want to invite people to "talk shit." I have seen fights break-out over people who love Madden and those who would rather throw themselves off a bridge than play Madden. I know I would. MY GOD football videogames are boring. This could get ugly.

You're also paying for the priveledge of being able to play online if you get the X-Box/PS2/360 versions.

I'm perfectly happy playing 2004, the only reason I would shell out would be to play online. And to do that I would want to make sure that 3/4 of the games wern't guys exploiting money plays.

The Maddenoliday is a cute gimmick, but it will get old if they use it next year.

Good news; it's in there, with new features. Mostly, new features in player development. They took the Madden '06 features where you pick random genetics, and merged it with the NCAA '06 Heisman mode where you had to run a mini-camp to determine how good your character started.

One thing that worries me is that they have new mini-camps, but some of them look... petty. There's a 40-yard dash minicamp and a bench-pressing minicamp, which are used in measuring your star's initial strength and speed. (And also used in superstar/franchise mode as a new system that lets you control an injured player's rehabilitation, but that's another story). The old minicamps are great fun, especially head-to-head rushing attack with two players, but these just look... bland. Too boring. I want football, not track and field.

All this is paraphrased from videos that are available on the Maddenoliday site. You can go watch them yourself if you want. They're in some of the boxes in the top-right corner.

I meant talk shit to each other about Madden-playing ability, not talk shit about wether Madden is a good game or not. I don't care if you don't like Madden.

You are bitching to people who don't care about something you cannot possibly begin to understand because you do not appreciate football, or probably sports games in general. Stop being a douche and GTFO. If you don't like Madden, at least voice your opinion in a respectful manner.

I want both this and NCAA 07, NCAA might interest me more because of the redone "Race to the Heisman", which is more realistic this time. All in all, Madden 06 sucked a lot of time from me, and I expect nothing less from 07. I never did get 100% accurate with the vision cone, though, I had to have a QB with good awareness to be very effective offensively.

I'm probably not going to be a fan of blocking for myself, it just seems, not fun. I'd rather let the AI do that for me.

I was able to import the most accurate rosters I could find into my 06, but of course, software restrictions kept me from having a franchise file with that roster. Plus I hate the faces given to CAPs.

Is there a point, Alex, to what you were saying? If you're just trying to find someone to argue with, then you're in the wrong place. If you don't like the Madden game franchise, then avoid this topic at all costs. Don't waste your time and ours just to get that postcount ++ and ego +++.

For the record, I'm not a big fan of sports games, so don't expect any post from me in this thread other than moderation-related.

I can help you.

"MY GOD football videogames are boring."

You could have said...

"Personally, I think that football games are boring." At least then you're stating your own position and not just making a blanket statement.

Found this on YouTube.

Madden 2007, Week 2 game, Dallas Cowboys at Washington Redskins:

1st quarter
2nd quarter
3rd quarter part 1
3rd quarter part 2
4th quarter part 1
4th quarter part 2

The player is controlling the Redskins vs a computer-controlled Cowboys, but you still get a pretty good feel for both teams.

The graphics look great from what I can tell, and the commentary isn't bad either. Madden and Michaels did get annoying after a while.

Oh god, don't get me started on Madden.

"This is a great time for a special teams play!"

It's like a fucking caricature of his real life personality. I won't miss him.

Does ANYONE know how the Wii version will control? I'm pretty much set on a Wii, but having good Madden is the only thing making me consider a 360.

If I can use the SNES-type controller and control my guy with a joystuck or control pad, then I'd be perfectly happy.

Links would be most appreciated, but a 2nd-hand description would do fine.

I know that you can pass by making a throwing motion, but other than that...

Personally, I think that football games are boring.

I do have a question, though, and I figure I'm eligible to ask since my own guilty pleasure is soccer sports games...

Maybe I'm hung up on how terrible the pre-current-gen roster of sports games was, or that Madden '05 retails for about thirty five cents at EB, and that Madden '06 will soon become the same way when '07 releases (after its ginormous amount of hype press LAST year), but the current form of Madden seems to be more of an RTS than most RTS games out there. It's just that rather than have your characters equipped with swords and chainmaille or guns and kevlar, you're equipping them with football gear and a piece of polymer shaped somewhat like two halves of a really fat missile stuck together. If anything, it reminds me a lot of Battalion Wars, controlling one unit on a field full of allies to achieve a common goal. I wonder, am I too far off the mark with this one?

It's funny, really: before reading this thread I never thought of a sports game that way, but now that I think about it more and more, the games really are evolving a bit.

Also for the people who claim that each successive game is nothing more than a roster update with a few new moves, I have to ask: Can't you trade players between teams anyway, causing the roster upgrade to become somewhat moot?

Due to a 7 round draft process to cycle rookies into the NFL from college, creating 200+ players a year is not plausible. Add that to the multitude of player movement, and creating an accurate updated roster is very time consuming. In addition, in most games, adding that many players to the game causes errors because the roster becomes too big, or the free agent pool becomes full, etc.

I picked up on a rumor that the 360 version has a bug where the players don't fatigue. Oops. Guess that exclusive license will come in handy because it's going to be the only NFL game in town.

I've never played Batallion Wars, but comparing it to a strategy game isn't too far off the mark I think. I love it for it's two-player mode. It's mostly about good playcalling (IE, finding a middle ground between calling the best play for the situation and not being predictable), reading the other player's team, and using audibles to maximize the chance that you get a gain.

Of course, some of it is dumb luck. You can have everything set up, but if you have a shitty player who makes a key mistake then you're fucked. But that's football, I guess.

Not only would you have to create the 200+ rookies (About 100 of which will see fairly regular playtime in actual NFL games) , but you'd have to give them attributes similar to what they have in real life. Every year the Madden crew spends a lot of time working with the actual players to come up with realistic statistics for every player. It'd be hard to do that from your couch.

Plus you won't have enough room on your memory card for all those players anyways

My friend is getting a 360 just for Madden, and I'm going over his house not long after the release to try it out. I'll let you know if the bug exists or not.

EDIT:

Not only has the 360 fatigue bug been confirmed, but there is already a patch in the works.

Ugh, this is why I have no motivation to spend a load of money on new games or systems; the producers always find a way to overlook obvious problems with their software. I'll end up waiting a while before buying anything new.
