Dunno if Montreal's going to use CCR (which would be a fun stadium to watch a game at) or Molson Stadium (which might be better attendance-wise). They'd better figure that out soon because you can't start selling tickets here before you know how many you can sell. We have all Group D games, a Round of 16 game and a QF.

In other news today... the Italian match-fixing results came in.

Juventus: Demoted to Serie B, 30 point deduction. Yes. 30 points. Translation: They're not coming back up to Serie A this year.
Fiorentina: Demoted to Serie B, 12 point deduction.
Lazio: Demoted to Serie B, 7 point deduction.
AC Milan: They can stay in Serie A but they'll start the season with a 15 point deduction, so they won't challenge for the title.

All the clubs are going to appeal but I hope the punishments stick. Inter Milan for the Scudetto.

I thought AC Milan got a 44-point deduction. Still, that's how you bring the hammer down. I almost wonder what it would take to get similarly severe penalties in sports that're big over here. I mean, you can't demote teams, but something that would ensure a team won't be contending.

No, no. If they got a 44-point deduction then you might as well just send them down to Serie B now because there's no way in hell they could recover from that. They got a 44-point deduction from last year's total which is purely smoke and mirrors, since they were going to be kicked out of European competition anyways.

Juventus were also stripped (!) of their last two league titles, which will be awarded to... no team.

And the only way I can think of applying this to pro sports here would be to say that a team is ineligible for postseason play.

GO INTER!

And yeah, does anyone know, that the World Cup trophy, has broken (well damaged, atleast) . A news channel here reported that the green malachite on the base got chipped and was later put together with glue .

I'm sure the trophy's been through worse abuse before, just like the Stanley Cup. Who knows what happens at those parties...

This is quite an interesting read. It's the story of how the cup was stolen a few months before the tournament.

Barca have signed Zambrotta and Thuram. I was really hoping Thuram would have come to Arsenal, now that Sol Campbell has left for Portsmouth. I saw a Sportscenter report that Arsenal were looking at Buffon, Thuram and Trezeguet, but that doesn't seem to be happening.

So far it's Juve doing all the selling so you'd have to think they're doubting an appeal victory. Cannavaro and Emerson went to Real for 20 million pounds or so.

I heard Tottenham wants Nedved.

Hooray, MORE lunacy! Appeals have been heard, now let's go to the judges.

Whoops, Juventus is still in Serie B. But they're only docked 17 points instead of 30. Everyone else gets to stay in Serie A, with reduced penalties, except I believe Lazio's penalty got increased.

I'm going to copy/paste what I wrote before about the punishments and make the necessary changes. OK? OK.

Juventus: Demoted to Serie B, 30 17 point deduction, three-match stadium ban, stripped of last two titles. Doesn't make it any easier and they said they "cannot accept this sentence". My take: tough. You keep pushing through with appeals and you're going to delay the Serie A season from starting, so quit bitching and accept the damn punishment.
Fiorentina: Demoted to Serie B Remain in Serie A, 12 19 point deduction, three-match stadium ban. They think it's a little better than before but lord knows 19 points is hard to make up in Serie A.
Lazio: Demoted to Serie B Remain in Serie A, 7 11 point deduction, two-match stadium ban. They're even more pissed about this than the original punishment.
AC Milan: They can stay in Serie A but they'll start the season with a 15 8 point deduction, and are allowed to compete in the Champions League - but only in the third qualifying round, not in the actual group stage itself. Out of the four, they're the only one's who seem to be accepting their fate now.

Apparently, football is the new football.

English Premier League team Aston Villa agreed to a $118.8 million takeover Monday by a group led by Cleveland Browns owner Randy Lerner.

Lerner's group, Reform Acquisitions Ltd., offered $10.37 per Aston Villa share, the principals involved in the deal announced to the London Stock Exchange. That represents a premium of about 47 percent over the closing price on Sept. 16, 2005, the last day before the beginning of the offer period.

"It is my belief and the basis for my bid to acquire Aston Villa Football Club that it can compete at the highest level within the Premiership and in Europe," Lerner said.

Sound familiar? Well, as I gather it, this is basically the anti-Man U deal, in that Aston Villa's supporters welcome the sale. Anyone want to let us know what Doug Ellis was doing wrong as chairman, besides coming thisclose to relegation in 2005-06?

Aston Villa is my new team to root for in the EPL by the way. They were set to have a bad season (and maybe be relegated) but with a fantastic new manager (Martin O'Neill, who did WONDERS with Celtic and rarely gets his tactics wrong) and with some actual money to spend, they should be OK. Not up in the European spots but maybe a strong mid-table finish.

Ellis had no ambition. He's a bit like a Jeremy Jacobs in Boston (NHL), I think... he wouldn't mind success but doesn't want to break the bank for it. He took over right after Aston Villa won the European Cup (now the Champions League) in 1981 and basically had a fire sale over the next few seasons. He'd rather see Villa have a mediocre season right in the middle or bottom half of the table instead of actually spending money to bring in a few guys who can immediately help the team. Lerner knows that the fans have basically suffered for a long time so he's going to be willing to open up the checkbook; not an insane amount, mind you, but enough so that the squad can improve a bit before September 1 and during the winter transfer window. And that's why the fans are happy, because Ellis was doing dick-all and Lerner knows that.

Now, the rumor is that O'Neill is interested in Stilian Petrov of Celtic, who is a very good midfielder that worked with O'Neill for several years, meaning he knows exactly what O'Neill's about and how the team's going to work. Maybe get him and one or two other guys in and Villa should, at the very least, be safe from the drop.

I made a bet with a friend the other day, about who would finish higher on the league table, Blackburn or Liverpool, I went with Blackburn. Whoever loses owes the other guy 2 beers. I think I told him something along the lines of "Liverpool will be lucky to pass Aston Villa in the league this year", I don't know, I was very drunk...

And before you say it, I know that common sense dictates that I just lost 2 beers. I know the ins and outs of the Premier League, and I know the difference between Liverpool and Blackburn. However, I believe one season bet each season is important... Last year it was 150kr (~$20) on Blackburn or Tottenham... Though not as ridiculous as Blackburn vs. Liverpool, it was still a gutsy bet. And even though I ended up having to pay, the difference between the two teams at the end of the season was only one spot.

...Gamst is still one of Blackburn's best and most valuable players, SomerZ, but he is NOT going to help Blackburn finish higher than Liverpool. XD

On the upside, Tromso's starting to claw their way to safety... I hope.

I know this Colin, however, I enjoy making the hopeless bets. At least as long as it's over something as small as two beers.

And yup, Tromsų is, for the first time this season (I think) not in a spot that gives them direct relegation. Always good to know.

Oh, and speaking of Gamst, he scored for Norway today (did you hear that he's talked to the FA about changing his name, by the way? From this season on his shirt will have Gamst, not Pedersen, on the back). The match eventually ended 1-1, against Brazil (though a slightly less star-filled Brazil). However, the result means that Norway is still the only nation of the 70-something nations to have played a match against Brazil but never lost. This was our 4th time playing Brazil, and so far we stand with 2 victories and 2 ties. Now that is quite impressive, really.

I wouldn't worry so much about your unbeaten streak against Brazil given that you have a tough Euro 2008 campaign coming up. Good luck.

And Canada dropped back into the 80's in the FIFA World Rankings for absolutely no reason. What a joke.

On the plus side... hm... 8-ticket packages for the U20 World Cup in Montreal are being sold for as low as $50. Hmmmmmmmm.

Do NOT remind me of that draw. Geez... France, Italy and Ukraine, with one of the three having to sit out. If Scotland can finish 3rd or 4th in the group and take a couple of points off those teams at Hampden, I'd be happy.

Your group isn't a BAD group but there's good teams in it; Greece, Turkey and Bosnia. You can't afford any slip-ups.

In other news: Reggina got PUNISHED today in Italy because they were caught on more corruption charges - yes, the scandal continues. 15 point penalty, which probably condemns them to relegation because they're not exactly a top-tier Serie A side.
