Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation has just hit stores in the United States. If you don't have your copy, get one now.

For those who have been dead these past 15 years, Super Robot Wars is Banpresto's long-running "All-Star Giant Robot Heroes To The Rescue": basically gathering up the most famous, awesome mecha from across the Japanese televised pantheon and putting them all in one game, complete with zany crossover stories to connect them all. The franchise has spread across multiple platforms, continuities and series, but the one place it has never hit - until now - is the world outside Japan.

And for good reason.

"All-Star Cartoon Heroes To The Rescue", the source of my earlier joke, was a one-shot anti-drug special featuring cartoon characters from enough disparate sources to make any kid grin ear to ear and any adult smart enough to understand its significance drop his jaw in a universal "how the...?". Problem was, they made the mistake of using Garfield. The company behind the Garfield cartoon gave the OK; Jim Davis did not. The special vanished into copyright oblivion after just one airing, never to be seen again. Now take that scenario and multiply it by Mazinger Z, Mobile Suit Gundam, Neon Genesis Evangelion and...oh, you know where this is going. Bringing a SRW game to the United States would entail a massive vanity project the likes of which have never been seen before in the legitimate game localization world: an ungodly licensing effort, doling out potentially millions to licensors in both the U.S. and Japan for the rights to use all these series. This is why Super Robot Wars has, until now, been purely the realm of fan translation: nobody has been crazy enough to try it.

The heroes of this story have lurked behind the scenes for quite some time. Never quite as prominent as their "canon" brethren but still awesome in their own right, the Banpresto Originals have long taken the helm of the Super Robot Wars series, filling the role of unbiased protagonist. Now imagine what would happen if the Originals were all treated like the myriad machines stealing the spotlight in the rest of the series. That's right...enter Original Generation 1 & 2, two GBA games (and their impending PS2 remake, yet to be announced for the U.S.) based solely around the extensive repertoire of giant robots and heroes Banpresto has invented for themselves. They own the rights to all the mecha, so whoever licenses the game gets the robots in the sweep. Isn't that awesome?

Yes, there's no Mazinger. Yes, there's no Gundams or Getter Team. NERV is absent, and so is 3G. It's a small price to pay for having one and soon to be two entries in the Super Robot Wars series available legit in the United States. Who knows? If it does well, there could be more on the way. The real stuff, this time. Atlus is just that awesome.

Super Robot Wars has hit the U.S., ladies and gentlemen. We never thought it would happen, but it's happened. Here's hoping it's not a one-time fluke.

I really don't care so much for the original generation games. There's nothing too exciting about them. I've never really seen why people have been so excited for original generation's release in the states. It's no big step in the way of getting the real SRW here anyway.

If it goes over very well, it'll probably prompt them to try something insane and actually get the other ones over here.

Besides, at least it's a SRW game here. It's better than nothing.

Besides, some of these guys are genuinely awesome. Even rendered with early GBA graphics, Granzon's complete PWNing of any and all who approach him is freakin' awesome. I hope Hugo and Aqua from MX appear in OG2...

Need to try it... it's gotten good reviews so far, I know that much, and the series itself has a very devout following in the States despite all the... well... language barriers.

It's on the long play list.

The US hasn't even have released most of the anime that the robots seen in game are from anyway.

I'm talking Mazinger, Great Mazinger, Getter Robo, Voltes V, Combattler V, assorted Gundam'u, Dancougar, the list goes on and on. And aside from actually having the anime on US shores, there's also getting all the legal work of having all those characters in the same game which they had to go through while making the game in Japan.

Actually, we've got around half the series available in the U.S.. GaoGaiGar is due out in English for the first time at the end of the month.

It's a matter of time and effort. Lots and lots of time and effort. Time and effort that nobody has gone into thus far. Somebody might, someday, and when that happens, we've got Super Robot Wars. It's not impossible: it's not guaranteed, but it's not impossible.
