This is the deal. My brother did a reinstall of WinXP on my computer and named the computer the same as my old computer's name, so everything that was on the desktop and the old user specific files (like Trillian chat logs) was wiped out. However, I know it's still on my hard drive because a trial recovery program shows sectors with pieces of files I want to recover...

Now, what would be the best file recovery program to get (I don't care if I have to buy it) to have the best chance at getting this stuff back?

Just remember that the longer you put off the file recovery process, the greater the chance you have of overwriting that deleted data. Heck, you might even overwrite your stuff by simply installing something like R-studio.

Which is why those programs suggest you to install them in a different drive/partition than the one you want to recover data from.

You probably got it covered, but if you'd like another hard drive to install the recovery program on, I have a spare I could send you. Best of luck!!

If you boot off of something like BARTPE, you won't need a second hard drive.
