I'm... shocked.

How can such a show get cancelled?

I mean, E3 was a nice way to get information for upcoming games for our consoles, and now we're left in the dark? That's... more horrible than World War II.

Even with the smaller shows, I think the gaming industry just took a plunge.

It's not just the advertising, Kario. E3 has its own wonder and mythos, which were sadly cut down. It's very .

Bullshit. The "E3" name is wayyy to valuable to just be thrown away. Maybe it will be smaller and only attended by the little (or Big) guys. The "E3" experience is too legendary to not be taken advantage of. There will be a E3 07.

I know it isn't for advertising. In the grand scheme of things though, thats all they got out of it was advertising, and they didn't get much of a return on that either. I know its a loss, but Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb suffered a bigger loss than most gamers did. Especially since you have to be press to even get in. (Unless you win a contest or something.)

Any other sources?

I'm sorry, but ever since this silly incident I have not been able to take joystiq very seriously.

joystiq has, indeed, lost quite a bit of credibility as of late.

I highly doubt this would happen; E3 is, as much as people try to deny it (cough, JS), a huge event that has the power to really give the scales a pre-emptive tip. (Remember how we all thought the Wii was silly before Nintendo's show? Yeah, that.)

It isn't "little press" because eveything that goes on in there is in all kinds of magizines and all over the internet.

Um... You guys do know that all the reputable websites are running this news and that Joystiq didn't break it, right? Check the link in the Joystiq article. GameSpot's running the story too.

Best-case scenario is that E3's being downsized and even that's a big deal.

ESA president Doug Lowenstein will likely announce the news some time within the next 48 hours, possibly on Monday.

As of now it isn't "official" -- I'll reserve further comment until it is.

Even if they downsize, the event loses a lot of its appeal; not to mention all the money that the event brings into the city.

If something does happen, then there's got to be more to this story.

I don't think it's really possible, anyway; think about it, most of the lower shows get almost no coverage unless there's something extremely major that happens, and I (for one) never even know when they go on.

Using more, smaller shows will also kill the hype (as it isn't just "omigosh! one big show that's TOTALLY THE SHIT" anymore, it's more like "another game expo in a few weeks")... not to mention all of the press around it.

I really see this as a very stupid move, but.

The only good thing would be that companies wouldn't have to make big announcements during one specific week.

Even if E3 stopped or became just another show, there'd probably be a few "high-profile" shows to look forward to... TGS, GDC and I would guess CES. (In case you didn't know, before E3 came along CES ran twice a year and was THE show for video game companies. Now it's once a year and one of THE shows for general technology.)

Technically, they don't have to make announcements during Eł (see also: the Wii). They choose to, because that's when everyone's eyes are glued to it.

I'd think one of the things they could do is open up Eł to the public -- free publicity, just charge, say, $10-50 for registration (and have early registration).
