I know the source is released, but I'm pretty sure distrubuting the entire game is still illegal.

Nobody is distributing the game here.

I merely posted a link to a website.

If you don't have anything constructive to stay, please don't troll my thread.

If you don't like, or want Quake 2 or to enjoy playing it, then fine.

And if they release the source, then anyone can just compile it ANYWAY.

Quake 2 went gold in 1997, almost TEN years ago. I'm sure iD is horribly worried about Quake 2.

Yes, but without the game files (that you still officially need to pay for), the source code is useless.

Now, could a moderator please close this thread before it falls down into the oh-so-fiery-pit-of-flames-and-spam.

I would have.

But then you decided to be stupid and post the request instead of PMing a moderator like you should. So, for that reason (primarily), I'm leaving it alone. Nice going, Slick. Something to consider: If a moderator wasn't going to read a thread before, they won't after you post there. Additionally, if a moderator read the thread, whether or not they see a problem would not hinge on your "expert" opinion.

((To the other mods: My other reason's that, with the source released, I'm a little unsure of the legality of this, and I'm not going to trust Simon's judgement. =/))

I'll take that as constructive critisism, Thexare. I realize my error, next time I think a thread should be closed, I'll PM a moderator. After all, a not-so-good thread doesn't get any better from a please-close-this post.

How the hell can you jump to the conclusion that I'm trolling? I didn't say anywhere that I didn't like Quake 2, I was merely stating a fact.

The source code is different because it's separated from the actual game files (.Pak files in this case, much like Doom's .Wad files which are also still illegal to distrubute). Whether id is still profiting from abandoned titles or not is irrelevant, it's copyright infringement plain and simple. If we're not allowed to link to 20 year old ROMs, then what do you think the policy here is on 10 year old PC games?

The source for Quake 2 was released, yes; but ONLY the source. You can't use the source to compile the full game, you can only gain an understanding on how certain things work. I assume that you could compile it if you had the .pak files, but those aren't freeware.

And if the source is freeware and the game hasn't been released to the masses, therefore the game's not freeware, therefore the link's being deleted.

You can also use the source code to figure out the structure of the PAK files exactly and reconstruct your own game files from scratch This isn't an unreasonable goal, it's pretty much what FreeDoom does for Boom-compatible engines.

Oh, you absolutely can. If the source is released you can do whatever you want with it given whatever license id put on it; but you can't distribute copyrighted files.

I don't care. You're posting to a site that has illegal content and being a prick about it.

It's not your board anymore, Erk. You don't call the shots. Deal with it.
