Like, wowza, I just found this website that gives free casino. I think I'm going to go see if it works - anyone else tried this?

No but seriously, my question is, have you ever been to any boards that have been overrun by spam and ads like this? And how bad? I heard the GameFAQ boards were absolute shit on a stick, but believe it or not, I've never actually posted there...so I don't really know

Most old boards that don't have registration; it'll have a 200-post thread; 25 comments and 175 spambots.

I find tons on Google. They'll have banners, popups, links, and the second-last or second post on each page is an ad. Fortunately in 99.99999999999999999997% of cases, everything but the text links and the post containing what would be an ad is blocked. The only time they really manage to annoy me is when they manage to get their posts indexed by Google, but when you go there, you get a nice big login box and in some cases links to buy an account. I like to just put "fuck you" in the name/password boxes, copy and paste until there's about a megabyte worth of text per box, and hit Submit a few times. _¬ Then into the Customize Google filter they go.
Come to think of it, next time I see that I should try changing my user agent to Googlebot.

Which is sad because it leads to almost every board not letting guests post, when preventing anonymous spam is so damned easy. Require guest posts to be approved by moderators, and if spambots are a problem, use a captcha. Bye-bye spam!

Actually, I know that a lot of online casinos give away free bonuses but you have to work off the bonus; for example, if you get $100 free you have to play $800 or so to get the bonus. Obviously, the vast majority of people who sign up blow the bonus and can't make up the money to get it into their account. Some people do but I'm guessing it's tedious work and the luck of the draw.

It's not uncommon for porn sites to show users a captcha (but never check the result) to bypass the need of a "real human" (rather, divert it)

Of course, letter reconition would be relatively easy to apply if you just did some detective work, I'm sure...

Hasn't captcha basically been defeated at this point? I thought I read something about that.

ALSO: A lot of low-stakes online poker players actually make decent money just on bonuses from various sites and solid play. Sign up, deposit the maximum that you can get a bonus for, play just enough to clear said bonus, go to another site and repeat.

Yep. Check out the Wikipedia Article for more information on that.

As for such ads, with adblock and a pop-up blocker at my side, few annoying ones stand a chance. However, redirect ads are still the devil and annoy the hell out of me wherever they are. Lucky, those are in very few places, so...

Redirect ads suck, but with Proxomitron it's usually not too difficult to rewrite the scripts to just send you straight to the page.
And like I said:

Maybe not only sucky ones, but a well-designed one should prove to be quite a problem for a computer. You can use other methods too, such as asking random stupid questions ("what colour is a black cat"), using non-standard field names so generic bots don't recognize them (maybe with fields in a hidden div that they will recognize, and ban anyone who fills them in), requiring something using javascript (press some key) for anonymous users, have them enter an email and send a verification link to it (where you could also provide a quick registration link), etc.
As advanced as OCR technology gets, it's not likely to change the fact that computers are stupid.
