I've been looking for work hardcore for well over a year now and the rejectings and excuses are starting to get old. I'm 17 and yet I have NEVER had a legal job despite how much I want to get one.

My plan right now is to walk across every inch of town (would drive but I have no car for obvious reasons) and check every place that I find. I have hit well over 20 different buisnesses in the last 2-3 days and still nothin.

I post about it in my AIM bio and some friends find it interesting....

"Bored, and in need of a Job =P. Damn you Stop and Shop, Wal-Mart, Friendlys, Kool Kone, IGA, Perrys (yeah I was desperate), Local cable company, CVS, Shaws, Movie theater, Olympia Sports, Family Doller and any other places that didn't hire me or even give me an interview. Basterds.

UPDATE-11/1/05- added Family Doller. I'm pretty sure Family Doller was the bottom of the ladder. Gotta go apply for a new job. Jiggalo =P j/k

UPDATE-11/18/05- CVS said no. However, I did set a new record by thinking I had an interview the moment the manager rejected me.

UPDATE- 12/5/05- This is really starting to piss me off. The manager at Olympia went to check out my application and then tells me they ain't hiring... after she checks out my application. Thus, sending my bull-shit detector to 11."

Did anybody ever have this much trouble finding work?

Well, if you're still under a roof, spiffy up your resume and be as sharp as a tack.

-Consider what's important to your boss.
-Always look in his/her eyes when you speak
-Stay standing until he/she asks you to sit down
-Tell your boss about your work experience. Previous volunteer work or community service hours can also work.
-Don't talk about your personal life, your boss doesn't care.
-Dress to impress; tie, slacks, shiny shoes, etc...
-Don't studder when you talk
-Speak up
-Sound confident and you'll be confident
-Don't slouch
-Every now and then give a nice smile to show that you'll be glad to help
-Give a nice firm handshake; not too dry, wet, cold, or sweaty. This shows your boss you mean business.

You work to make your boss look good, these are some thoughts that should help. Don't worry, you'll get your next shot at things. Try looking online. Monster.com always worked for me. Check for local careers.

In my view, this is the food chain of jobs in America:

Top (highest status jobs / highest paid jobs)
------------------------------------------------------------
1. Doctors, Lawyers, CEOs/executives, Corporation Owners

2. Regional Manager

3. Stockbroker / Pharmacist / Nurse / Anaesthesiologist / Other paraprofessional careers.

4. General Manager

5. Normal Manager

6. Teaching / Professor / Government Worker

7. Upscale Food (like waitering or bartending) / Retail Clothing (e.g. The Gap) / Nice Hotel Serivce

8. Food Service / Factory Work / Misc. Retail like Video Stores and Best Buy / Normal Hotel workers / Door To Door Sales / Telemarketing (good pay though)

9. Walmart / Meijer / Target / Kmart / Dollar Store Retail
----------------------------------------------------------------
Bottom (lowest status jobs / lowest paid / crappiest environment)

There are obviously more jobs than what I've listed. Category 7 and above tend to require a more personable attitude. those are the jobs that if you hate people, you will hate the job, most likely. I don't think you should work in category 9 (9th circle of hell) if you can help it. If you really need a job, food places are ALWAYS hiring. In a pinch that's where you go. To get higher jobs you generally need to be personable and have some sort of experience. Getting recommendations from people you know who work there also helps.

Grocery stores are always hiring, too. I got a job within days once I applied there. I spent a bit of time this summer looking for a job, but got rejected because I wasn't old enough, had no experience, or simply didn't fit the part. But now at least I have experience for when I apply for a new job elsewhere.
Just keep looking, try your best to hit everywhere... good luck.

Another thing you should do is be persistent. Keep applying at the same places. Every No you recieve brings you closer to that Yes. I had the same problem when I was 17 and eventually got a job at Subway for a short while.

Ask your friends to help you at the places they work and have them put in a good word for you. Just keep trying and don't give up.

McDonald's anyone? I got a job there with ease. Took a couple weeks to get called, though...

Do you have an Apac where you live? They'll hire anyone who can breathe...

Are you sure you need a job? If you need the money I could see getting one, but if you're just bored, it seems like there's are alot of other things you could do. Maybe you could take a class or something. Take it from someone who spends over 50 hours a week at one, jobs aren't nearly as great as you'd think.

Are you calling all of these places back? And I don't just mean once, I mean, after you turn in your application, wait about 2 days and call them to see if they've looked over it yet, if not, give them 3 more days and call them back again.
