I recently bought the newly released Mario Kart DS. There was tonnes of hype surrounding this game, because it features Nintendo's newly release Nintendo WiFi service, which lets you play against people accross the world.
I've yet to try this feature, and doubt I'll ever do so. I actually upgraded from dial-up to 512k broadband just for this. Okay, so 512k doesn't sound like much, but it's the best internet connection you'll find within Australia without having to pay around $70 U.S. a month.
I don't even know if I'll even be able to try out WiFi thanks to my shiity connection (compared to the rest of the world), which is a fucking huge dissapointment. Now I'm stuck on a 2 year contract and I don't even know if I'll be able to use it for what I wanted. Hell! I couldn't even play Little Fighter 2 with Stifu!

Now to the actual game:
It in no way lives close up to it's hype. The game isn't bad or anything, but it's just nothing special. It's your average Mario Kart game, but with an added Mission Mode, where you do normal racing skill-type things and get a rank based on how fast you did it. Some missions are pretty damn hard to get a 3-star rating in, but I guess that adds to longetivity. I've been a member of the Nintendo Official Forums for a while, and a few people have mentioned that you don't get any reward what-so-ever for getting a 3-star rating in all of the missions. This is a fucking huge let down... What's the point?

Every character has quite a few karts to unlock, which is alright. I've yet to unlock any, actually. Plus there are 6 other characters to unlock. That's definately a plus!

Some of the old-style remixed music will bring back some memories, but other than that, the music isn't anything special.

Graphics-wise, the game looks a little better than Mario Kart 64, but nothing overly awesome.

Overall, the game isn't bad, but definately isn't great. This game certainly isn't the "killer app" Nintendo fans had hoped for, what with the poor functions of the WiFi service and all. There is no chat, no way to exchange WiFi codes (so you can add enjoyable opponents to your own friends list), and no consequences for quitting out of an online battle if you're losing halfway through the final race. Yep! If you think you're going to lose, and you don't want a loss on your permanent record, just turn off your Nintendo DS, and you'll have a perfect record!

Despite all the downsides, if you're a Mario Kart fan, get this game. It'll dissapoint you slightly, but overall, it's not a "bad" game. I'll give it a 7 out of 10.

P.S. I only bought this game several hours ago, and have played it for maybe 4 hours. I'm also drunk right now, so bite me.

512k trumps my DSL connection, though, and I didn't have lag playing Kirbynite. Also, there's only four secret characters I thought...

Anyway, though. This has some of the best tracks in Mario Kart history. I only wish they had the GCN Bowser's Castle. It's forgiveable, though, since the Bowser's Castle in this one is almost as good (and very different).

Now if only Tick Tock Clock, Waluigi Pinball, Airship Fortress, and Bowser's Castle were available for WiFi...

Also.

Except for that. Y'know. Then you're clearly a jackass and no one will play you.

Four, huh? Here I was hoping to see Toadette

And uh... I think you do have losses whenever you disconnected. I heard it somewhere that's the case ;

Yeah. I made a mistake.
Only four secret characters.

I'm glad to hear that my internet connection shouldn't be a problem. Thanks
Now we'll see how fun this game really can get!

I'm up to doing the 100cc cups, and it's pretty annoying. Sometimes the AI are in-humanly fast, or patheticly slow. It'd be nice to have a leveled playing field for a change.

Battle Mode would totally kick ass if I could find other people with DSes. Ah well.

Yeah. Sure, we could make a list of people who constantly drop out when they're losing, but there'll always be fresh people in the world for these said people to challenge. At least it'll stop our frustration.
But I've recently also read that players get penalised for quitting now, which is fantastic news! Someone on Nintendo's Official Forums said that 3 losses got put on their permanent record!

I apparently have a loss on my record. I guess it's 'cause I quit against Kirbynite, though it wasn't like mid-match or something... Because, it's not tied to any one record. Disappointing

Damn, now you guys are making me want to get this game really bad. The only big problem with me that I don't have a high speed / DSL connection at home and I don't live near any internet cafes or anything. Anybody have any tips on how I'd be able to play online?

Hopefully they fix this somehow, since it's pretty much a fix server-wise.

I hope they know about that problem. :/

And oh, i'm not sure if Mario kart is released yet here... I think it was supposed to be released in December. I better check if it's possible to play against US, and see how good it will go.

So I had a match with Cy.

I am now convinced this is the greatest thing in quite awhile.

Just... Horrid shame Bowser's Castle, Waluigi Pinball, Tick Tock Clock, and Airship Fortress aren't in WiFi...

You are kidding? I like those tracks the best too.

Eh, it would slow down a lot, though, if you think about it. I mean, Bowser's Castle has moving platforms and fire, Waluigi Pinball has... pinballs, Tick Tock Clock has the gears and hands, and Airship Fortress has Bullet Bills and fire and junk. But DK Pass has snowballs...

I tried to get on WiFi today at my McDonald's about 20 miles away after school. I found the connection, but I don't have the WEP code, nor do I know what to do from that point. Either way, it could rarely find the hotspot when searching for one anyway unless I sat at one table.

Just that little obstacle prevents me from playing it online.

Oh, and one thing:

Luigi's mansion has the trees and that chandelier, too. DK Pass and Luigi's Mansion work fine in WiFi.

Heh, at least Luigi's Mansion, DK Pass, and Sky Garden are there. I actually think I'd rank them as

1. Tick Tock Clock
2. Sky Garden
3. Waluigi Pinball
4. Airship Fortress
5. Bowser's Castle
6. DK Pass
7. Luigi's Mansion

I don't really have anything past that.

It´ll be released on the 25th of November, Ailure. Check various online stores.

I´m going to order it and my cousin too. I´ll probably practice some before I go online.

DAMMIT! DAMMIT! DAMMIT! DAMMIT! DAMMIT! DAMMIT! DAMMIT! DAMMIT! DAMMIT! DAMMIT! DAMMIT! DAMMIT! DAMMIT! DAMMIT! DAMMIT! DAMMIT! DAMMIT! DAMMIT! DAMMIT! DAMMIT! DAMMIT!

It was the final round... I was 15 points ahead of the second-place guy... There was no way to lose, so I did nothing the final round, content in my victory, not knowing you get disconnected for being inactive for 30 seconds. As a result, I got three losses on my record, as it was a four-way match and disconnecting counts as you losing to everyone... So my record is now 38 wins, 6 losses.

This sucks SO MUCH...
