Sony Kills Off UMD Movies

Sales of movies on the PSP’s once-hot proprietary format have slowed to a trickle, causing several major movie studios to cease supporting it. In March, the Hollywood Reporter ran an article claiming that the home-entertainment divisions of Universal Studios and Paramount Pictures have “completely stopped” releasing films on the format, and other studios have been cutting back their release slates.

In even better (translation: even more colossally stupid) news? Sony's putting out movies on Memory Sticks. You get to choose from S.W.A.T., The Grudge, Hitch, and XXX: State of the Union. In the words of Tony Schiavone, yeah, THAT'LL put asses in seats.

Not having a PSP, I don't really care that much. If I did have a PSP though, I would be slightly pissed. I like having portable movies. I would have bought many UMD movies for my PSP that I wish I had. Now I don't want a PSP as much.

Don't forget that Tony Schiavone was absolutely right (Half a million people immediately switched to RAW when he said that).

Once hot?

Was UMD movies ever hot? I mean, more expnesive than the DVD version and lower quality? And it was once hot? I never saw much of a success, as the few people I know who used PSP for playing movies only used the memory sticks.

I have a PSP and I have never bought a UMD for it ever. So this really doesn't bother me at all. BTW, a horrible choice for movies on the memory sticks.

You know, until they release the PSP, I was actually under the impression that Sony learned something from Betamax.

I wasn't 100% certain that UMD would be a massive failure but it's clinched that honor now. :\

Sony's learning a lot about how not to market a portable this time around.

I use my Firmware 1.50 PSP with DevHook to run homebrew and emulate later PSP versions. I never used UMD personally, and always saw it as stupid. But yeah, Sony has been making a lot of mistakes with their consoles lately. Their mistakes seem very similar to those very early console makers made. In fact, they even seem to be assuming brand name will win, so they can jack up the prices for their consoles. Which is horribly wrong.

I'd like to use the PSP for emulation and that, but if I went down that road... why not the GP2X?

There are some good games for it. GTA:LCS, Megaman Maverick Hunter X, among others. There aren't as many as there are on the DS, but they make it worth it.

Yeah, but that's the thing... the games make the system. :\

And really, there's only one game I would really want to play on the system at the moment... Mega Man Powered Up.

The two games you have just mentioned are both remakes for superior systems.

Uhh...no. Maverick Hunter X has a lot more features than the original Megaman X did (i.e. more speech, playing as Vile, etc.), and LCS is nothing like the other GTAs.

I've always thought the PSP was a pretty poorly designed system in the gaming area. There are only two games I want for it, Twisted Metal and Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. Even then I would rarely play them. The screen is too small for the kind of games they have on it.

Keyword is.. remakes.
And a lot of people actually find voices to be obnoxius in those games, and not a quality feature to boast about. Even if the dubbing was decent, I don't really think anyone cares, it is still a rehash of an old game. (And sometimes simplicity IS superior, you know?)

Not saying the game is bad, but Grey had a point. Besides, the PSP is just outright doing terrible.. I haven't owned a handheld in years mind you, but I find it pathetically sad that the main positive point anyone has about it, is that they can hack it to do stuff it wasn't designed for. And of course, Sony seems to be doing everything they can to prevent that too; so essentially it just becomes a paper weight.

Yea, there might be a game or two that's decent. But was it reeeeeally worth what it cost? Especially if you consider that the homebrew stuff wasn't even meant to be a viable option in Sony's mind. (I find it a terrible arguement when someone thinks the handheld is good for its homebrew capabilities.. that's like breaking a fine glass bottle and saying its great because it makes an excellent weapon, in spite of the fact it is shattered and useless for its original purpose.)

remakes != ports

remakes != ports

remakes != ports

(also, sony isn't particularly wanting to kill homebrew -- it's more of the fact that homebrew allows you to boot illegal UMD images. homebrew suffers because some idiots don't feel like paying money)

(keep in note that while I am in favor of emulation, that's of older, dead consoles -- pirating current-gen games is just plain wrong D: )

What do I do with my PSP? Play LocoRoco.. a LOT, that and Everybody's Golf. If I want to watch films, I'll just rip/download whatever them to MP4 and do so.
UMD films are plain overpriced, but they do look pretty decent with the PSP's big screen.

Ah well, you may sneer and giggle but don't knock something till you've tried it.

Trade your PSP in for a DS Lite, then buy a GBA slot CompactFlash loader. I emulate all sorts of crap on my DS, and it looks goddam sweet in the process, while not weighing a metric ton.

Word. I've never ripped off current games, but I emulate all sorts of old systems. My DS has just about every SNES RPG and a large wad of my puzzle games on it. (Yay for 4GB SD cards)

Oh, and there was talk that they'd package UMD's with normal DVD's so you get both for only 5$ more, but due to struggling PSP sales recently and the already lackluster performance of UMD's, that plan seems to be canceled.

The PSP could of been good, but they totally F'ed it up and it's game support was horrible. I can count on one hand how many good PSP games there are with decent replay. Unlike the DS which I don't have enough digits to count the amount of good games even if I include my toes.
