Yea that video was funny... although Im not a talented hacker either so I can relate to legoman somewhat. I once made this FF1 hack with Mario in it... and my hard drive blew up and ive never hacked anything good again since...

The problem with defending Legoman is that despite countless efforts to show him what he's doing wrong, he continues to make stupid mistakes far below even the level of "n00b who has no idea what he's doing". Even someone who's never played SMW before should know enough not to put keyholes in the wall for no reason and to fix glaring, stupid bugs. It's the sort of mistake you think cannot possibly be unintentional, absolutely has to be a joke... but he just keeps doing it. And on top of that, he just took someone else's unfinished demo, added glitches, and called it his own. WTF?

HH's point = Copying graphics from a game is something anyone can do, complaining about permission from another person who ripped them before you is asinine.. You can't hold any ripper responsible for permission over the graphics. However, custom graphics from someone in the community you can actually ask and “should” ask permission for before using it.

Your point = Regardless, everyone is copying original work without permission anyway; and to copy professional work without permission should be no different than copying something from someone in the community without permission. (It all boils down to the same deal.) And you’re entirely right from this perspective, and I don’t think anyone can feasibly argue the point without it simply just.. going over their head.

The only difference I see is that you cannot reasonably ask the permission of the pro's (for numerous reasons) but you can ask permission from someone in the community easily enough if you try. Now, personally I don't give a rat’s ass about rips, SMW, or anything else regarding this, but yea. There is a slight situational difference. Personally, I wouldn't give a damn if someone took the graphics out of one of my hacks without asking me, though I would appreciate some kind of nod in my direction for it. (Not that it reeeeally matters on the internet, since your online persona is drown in a sea of anonymity anyway.) The difference is really just a fine line though, so fine that it is pretty ridiculous to even bring it up unless someone prior states that they flat out don’t want whomever to use so-and-so graphics and they go and do it anyway.

It can also be argued that since it is not feasible to ask the pro’s for their work, one should simply not use rips at all and work with only community graphics. This is probably an excellent time however, to ring in that we are on a ROM hacking forum and what we’re doing isn’t entirely within the boundaries of legality anyway, morals and personal feelings are very bent and morphed here for “fun.”

The moral of my rant would simply be, when examined logistically (Alastor’s tried and true method) we see that quite a few people act irrationally and just plain silly and over protective of their work that was just meant to be.. you know, for fun anyway?

This is about what I meant. Two key points:
1) You don't really need to give credit to Nintendo for the original graphics, because A: Everyone will recognize them immediately anyway and B: They don't care.
2) If you were to give credit for rips (which, despite the previous point, is still a good thing to do), the credit should go to the artist who spent hours drawing them for the original game, not the ripper who spent 5 minutes copying them. Maybe if for some reason they're really hard to rip, you might credit both.

When I use rips, I always make a point of naming the game they're taken from. Simple and effective.

I've never personally had anything against Legoman, and for some reason, now that Pete points it out, I do sorta feel like a dick for laughing at him. Sure, it's not okay to rip someone else's work off, and sure, it's not ok to steal graphics. But how old is he? Like 12? And while it is funny to laugh at "this is not a quest, this is your a missio" it's still good to remember that he has bad English. He does try, and even if he fails, at least he keeps working at it. Hell, he can even handle harsh criticism, unlike someone we all know and hate.

I still don't take back what I said about Smallhacker's video though, I still find it pretty funny.

But reading over HH's post (yes this is an edit) it is true that he has been told numerous times to improve his mistakes, and he keeps making them...

I don't really know what to think about this kid anymore...

and as for your second point, it serves the purpose of discussing everything related to legoman's awful-looking hack!

is there a rule that threads need to be closed after a certain number of pages? no! when a discussion gets "old and repetitive" people will stop replying to it and it'll disappear of its own (lack of) momentum. i personally can't stand seeing more than one or two closed threads on the front page of the forum. it's just annoying when moderators abuse their powers and close threads because they personally don't like them or because they were *gasp* TOPPED!

anyway the point of this rant is to say that there's no reason to close this thread - well except that i'm helping to bring it pretty far off-topic.

Before this gets closed, I would like if you tell legoman that I will help him and teach him to make good SMW hacks if he wants. (the last 2 lines of my last post) so he can show what he can really do and that way we won't have any reason to tell him what we all said in this thread.
