The problem is a social problem, not a technological one.

It's both. One causes the other, both ways. I don't disagree with you on the social aspect, otherwise this wouldn't be a problem. However, the tech aspect is helping cause the social aspect.

Basically, the bad people are bad people. The postcounts and other freebie stats make the shit worse.

If it REALLY is both, why is it that some forums with same or similar features don't have the same problems??

I would argue that the problem is far more a social problem than a technological one at least. I think that the technology is scapegoated a lot... and it's a lot easier to change the technology than it is to change things like a social culture.

God damn, Taryn, I love your thinking. Few problems, though.

One, what applies here may not apply elsewhere. Sure, other places, may have postcounts, but this place attracts idiots. The postcounts merely amplify them.

Also, I would love nothing more than to purge this place of the bottom of the gene pool. Change the social setting? Sure. I'd love to.

Just get back a shitload of the original posters circa '01, and alienate everyone that came here '05 and up. That should knock out the losers, and keep at least those that we like. It's fucking hard to change a social setting, especially when you have a group of people that can't take criticisms, harsh or soft as they may be, and if you reprimand them for doing something, go batshit on you. That, or they're fucking asskissers.

I say the cool kids go make their own board, and the people that aren't dumb stay here. That okay?

lol... I wish I had answers for all of that, and yeah, some places do attract idiots for some reason. I really wish I knew why, but it's got me stumped.

Is it perhaps subject / interest related? Or rather, the way that certain subjects or interests are presented here??

I dunno... now my brain hurts and I'm hungry. It's time for soup!

Subject/interest, most likely... I mean, a board on Final Fantasy might attract a few more fanboys than one on, say, Civilization.

I think the admin(s) should be the example.

I think postcount inspires idiotcy somewhat, but 90% people who get all wide-eyed by the numbers would be idiots even if there was no post count.

If I had a real problem with anything here it would be the ACS and syndromes, but people don't seem to care about those as much as they used to. Still, lots of people have pretty blatantly spammed in the name of ACS/syndromes. Most of them never really see any consequences for it.

The best solution to it all is good modding, in my opinion.

Also, no matter what, there are always going to be the people who contribute the bare minimum into posting. They'll follow all the rules, post with good grammar and spelling, and completely not contribute anything. I really have no clue what to do about these kinds of people.

I really don't think we have a problem here. Sure, we have some idiots, but a majority of them get banned and the ones that aren't don't become active posters. Aside from SMW hacking, I think our board is pretty intelligent.

Smack them in the head with a fish?

Meh, I know what you mean about those ones. I guess a moderator at one point will have to step in and ask for some actual contribution/content, but it's not an easy issue to raise with another person.

But yes, good moderation is part of the solution. I think general users underestimate their value as far as positive impact on the board goes too. I know they can't act like "mods" as such, but there are still ways I think that the general populace can make sure this place is the best it can be

I think the most important thing to remember is that it's just a message board. There will always be the idiots, just like you probably know a person or two that your friends hang out with but you can't stand. You tolerate the people because if you can put up with their shittyness then there is a wealth of intelligence in the other people you know.

I mean, I don't think I really hate anyone on this board in the strong sense of the word, but what keeps me coming back is a few people who post really intelligent stuff that I like to read. Amongst a few other things, of course, but that is a big part of it.

Oh yeah, another thing I think I find keeps this place "good" for me, is that I never take anything too seriously

Helps a bunch, honestly Any problems... they'll all "come out in the wash" as the saying goes

The important thing here is that the majority of the always-active users are sane. It's some of the sporatic ones who tend to spam or act a little... well... not sane.

I think the complaint was more on the subject than on his spelling/punctuation/grammar/etc. And on that note, I think he's FAR better than, say, Strangler...

And on the subject of nuking the board to get rid of the idiots... How would it solve anything? There will invariably be unwanted elements, no matter the medium. Starting over whenever they appear solves nothing; a new batch will just crop up, even if the old one vanishes permanently. As far as I'm concerned, the only real solution is to try to live with them, and hope for the staff to solve any examples of unbearable idiocy, which they seem to be doing a pretty good job of.

Ghosts post made my eyes bleed.

Is it me, or is stupity more common then it was in past years? I mean, I like stupid thats funny, but when you look at the general outlook of things, most stupity seen around here is flaming, bad SMW hacks, crappy grammer/layouts.

Nobody could ever forget the thread threating to come "fuck me up", nobody could ever forget that evil eye blinding DBZ layout, nobody could ever forget mariodizzy and his "awesome" comic, and nobody can ever forget mariomaster1's "best hack ever".

You see, not all idiots are bad. They provide me with a laugh.

But yeah, there are too many now.
