I've stayed up all night for the past two days playing console games, posting, playing Blockland, looking for MP3's, and other junk, and I haven't been able to sleep. I'm only moving around to use the bathroom or eat. Other than that, I'm on the computer for countless hours.
Is this normal? |

I'm guessing you're a teenager, in which case, yes, this is perfectly normal and is one of the known side-effects of being a teenager.
It will catch up with you, but at your age probably not as quickly as sleep-deprivation catches up with me. But you WILL get sleepy, and eventually your body will force you to sleep, one way or the other. But yes, being a teen is known to wreak havoc with sleep patterns. It's fun while it lasts though (edited by Tarale on 07-10-06 10:34 AM) |

Been there before several times, done it several times. Kinda fun to stay up for countless hours, but sooner or later your body will force you to sleep. And... when your in school...
I remember during my senior year at West High, stayed up practicaly the entire day, went through the night with no sleep, and it was on a school day. Had to suffer from lack of sleep. Though most of my teachers understood, while several other teachers didn't give a damn. |

I've pulled many all nighters before. They're reducing in numbers nowadays, but I still do them. In fact, I did one today, so I could watch daytime TV game shows. In fact, that's usually the only reason I stay up for so long nowadays. I usually don't feel tired at all when I do so; I can function on little sleep; the only consequence is feeling lightheaded after a while if I don't get any sleep at all. I post on message boards or playing games to pass the time. For example, last night I played E.V.O. for a while. In some cases, I do this as part of my primary reason for staying up.

I take offense to it being implied that no teenagers are morning people. I routinely go to bed around midnight and wake up between 7:00 and 9:00 in the morning, and I've been like this pretty much my entire teenage life. (edited by Alastor the Stylish on 07-10-06 01:26 PM) |

It wasn't implied anywhere.
Besides, I too am a morning person. I fell asleep around 2AM and woke up at 7. With an alarm clock, but it still counts. |

Umm... You should probably get some excersise so you're tired by that time. I usually run a mile every 2-3 days... My sleeping pattern isn't too screwed up; I go to bed at about 11, and wake up somewhere between 6 and 7. I'm kinda sleep deprived, but it really doesn't affect my day. Even if I get like 1 hour of sleep, I don't yawn half as much as I do in church.

Eh, I'm not a morning person. But I do love my sleep, and I very rarely pull all nighters or anything like that. I almost always get 9+ hours of sleep during the summer. The school year is a different story, I HAVE TO be up at 5am no matter when I go to sleep.

I am a computer science person...this means I don't have sleep in my dictionary
I've been sleeping more lately...partly because my friend and I talk until 3,4 in the morning and I have to wake up by 6am usually when I'm really into a game, I will neglect sleep. Although Riku, it might be a sign for things to come... perhaps, you won't be able to sleep until you reach a satisfiable point in your games... |

I didn't say that anybody was or wasn't a "morning person". I wasn't when I was a teenager.
However, it's fairly well known that once you hit puberty, your sleep patterns shift so that you go to bed later and later. It's a shift in your body clock, seems to change on average by about two hours. However, teenagers bounce back from sleep deprivation... amongst other things... a lot better than most. Doesn't mean you are or are not a "morning person", but you're more of a morning person now than you're ever likely to be -- it only gets worse, people God damned growing old sucks. I don't bounce back from bloody anything well anymore. You might still be a morning person when your body is no longer as adaptable to various abuses, I dunno. I know I feel like I've been hit in the head with a brick if I deprive myself of sleep too much. (edited by Tarale on 07-10-06 10:12 PM) |

I never slept much in high-school. Maybe 3ish hours at night and a nap in study hall. It has since caught up to me. I still don't sleep enough but it really kills me.
Still, I have some periods where I can't sleep for days. It's awful because I'm not really awake after a while either. I almost killed my appartment manager one night because I hadn't slept in quite a while and she rang my doorbell at 3am on the night I finally fell asleep. Fucking bitch... Anyway, as long as you feel fine, cool. Me? I take pills when I can't sleep. Pills are good. |

I'm not a huge fan of being beholden unto anything myself, but when you really need to you really need to. I don't take meds that make me drowsy, they just regulate something or other to let me fall asleep if I try to. I don't take them often but its nice to have the assist when I really need to sleep and can't.

I side with Kasdarack on this.
I get insomnia randomly and am usually unable to barely function if I don't get at least 7 hours of sleep per night; the pills lend a serious hand when this problem arises (which, fortunately, is not too often). |

I tend not to like the idea of pills myself -- but then I hear they don't tend to lead to *quality* sleep.
However, I'm having issues regarding sleep at the moment. Once upon a time, I used to be able to "roll with the punches" a bit when it came to irregular sleep patterns. Even if I only got minimal sleep for days on end, the worst I ever felt was very tired...and once after a week of it... delusional. Now if I get less than 7 hours sleep, I really, REALLY feel it. Not enough sleep, and I experience anything between non-functional tiredness (which I attempt to rectify with espresso) to feeling sick to my stomach and this stupid stabbing pain behind my right eye. I reckon it would take me ONE all nighter now to become stark raving delusional mad, instead of 4 |

I take temazepam, which does not affect REM sleep and doesn't eliminate any of the other sleep stages, so I get a perfectly good nights' sleep. |
