I'm a grunt worker at Toys R Us. I do more or less a little of everything: Stockroom, floorwork, videogame section, customer service, janitorial work, and register.
Unfortunately, the company is cheap, and refuses to give me full time hours. For the last five weeks, I've been working 35 hours per week, being paid for 38 (I get time and a half on Sundays). The full-time hour requirement is 38+ hours per week, and I am scheduled anywhere between 35 and 37, in order to keep me part-time. I am paid as a full-time worker would be, but I do not get a health benefits package for full-time work. The company refuses to spend any more money than they already have to on me, and as a result, in spite of our being devastatingly understaffed, I am maxed out on hours each week to ensure that the company doesn't have to provide me with an ambiguous health package. A full-time job would rule. Especially considering the crap TRU makes its workers put up with. |

Seems like we've done this thread.
Anyway, I'm a machinist. I average about 60 hours a week, so yeah, full time. I setup machines and sharpen and set their tooling. I also run CNC machines and program them with code that looks like this: N50; M13 S6000 T1515; G0 X.5 Z.04; G1 X-.04 F.002; G1 X.45 F.007; G1 X.5 W-.025; G0 X2.28 T0; etc..etc...for the next two pages. |

Part time I guess. Since summer I've been getting anywhere from 20-40 hours a week.
I work at Jiffy Lube, doing most of the basics ... - Courtesy Tech. This is what I mainly do, talk to customers, get their information if needed about their vehicle and the type of oil they're using, etc. Then vaccuum the inside, check tire pressure, wash outside of the windows, and make sure they get a sticker put inside to tell them when their next oil change is due, because its apparently very hard to remember every 3 months to 3000 miles is recommended. - I can also work basics on hoods. Put oil in, top off other fluids, change out air filters, and maybe do some radiator flushes here and there. PCV valves also, and that's about it. - Lower bay ... I can drain some transmissions that have plugs on the bottom, maybe do a drain and fill differential, and then the basic drain oil and change out the oil filter. I've been there for a year now, and have gotten 2 raises so far (both 50 cents). There's only 10 or so employee's there, and only 2 managers at the moment. There's been some hectic Saturday's where my manager will be a complete jackass about things, and I've come -very- close to just tossing whatever could be in my hands to the ground and saying "Fuck you, I'm out". I mean I love the guys at my work. We're all like a family, but I put up with quite a bit of shit sometimes, and someday I could just snap and say screw it. I also really hate being in the position I am, the position in where I'm usually the first one to talk to -every- single customer that comes in the shop. People can be so retarded at times, it just pisses me off. I especially cannot stand it when people just come for no apparently reason, automatically pissed off. So they're instantly throwing an attitude at you, and that just puts me on edge. It also doesn't help that we're one of the most active stores in the Region, where a day where we may do 70+ cars is nothing special (that's pretty much cars pulling up nonstop throughout the entire day. Boy do I love when this happens when I'm trying to eat some food). I also wish some people understood I'm just simply doing what I need to do, if someone comes in and asks for the special and we're not running it, I could really careless if they come and say "Well I'll just go there instead then, bye". Okay, bye? Remind me when I'm supposed to care. I'm happy with my pay honestly, but I have a friend of mine who works at Lowe's and does nothing but register, and is making 2.75 more than I am. I put up with so much crap sometimes, and now that I'm 18 I have more opportunities out there, I'm just not sure if I'm going to keep this job after this summer. I could go on and on and on with details and everything, but I'm sure nobody really cares. Added benefit: Employee's can pull in their own cars and do basically whatever they want, and perform any services for free. So far for my car I've replaced the fuel filter, done emissions, changed the oil twice, replaced the PCV valve, and make sure my other fluids and everything are updated. But really, they shouldn't be free for us. =O (edited by Racer Xeo on 07-07-06 04:53 AM) |

I put part time but maybe it should be full I work almost every day, but, my shifts aren't all day so that's what made me put part time. I'm a waitress. I used to work different shifts at two different restaurants, and now I just work slightly longer multiple shifts at one of them (the one that was much closer to where I'm living).
I make money off of tips but any and all money I make at all I use to help auntie support me, and she insists I keep a little for my self. I put it away for safe keeping and on a rainy day, sometimes I buy myself a treat. Waitressing is hard and long work, and the hours I have are late so I can go long times without much sleep (and when I have to study between and on shifts during school it gets crazy). Holidays are busy and the times later in the year when the visiting families come it gets really busy and my work doubles, but I get payed more. My boss says I'm a very hard worker and I try my extra hardest to make sure I do a good job. I would not recomend this kind of job unless you like hard work though ^^;; (edited by Yoronosuku on 07-07-06 07:30 AM) |

No job, nor any plans to look for a 'real' one until (much) later this year after I get an idea of how my school will be working out. I would much rather wait (and leech off of my $4,000 savings) than get myself in over my head...
Of course, right now I take oddball jobs in the family like house sitting (Aunt's and Grandparents', Jul15-22 and Jul22-Aug01 respectively), and earn a whopping $0.12 an hour at my grandparents' house for it. =P (Pay unknwon for aunt's, probably higher) It's not much, but it's enough for the occasional need to burn money... I'm also looking into web-design, but until I learn how to use more tools and get a better computer (800MHz does not cut it anymore, sorry WB800) I probably can't do much outside of silly Starfish/MS Paint combonations, though they sometimes come out rather well. We'll have to see. My cousin offered me $100 to redesign his website years ago, but in the process of doing so my mother decided to throw out my computer. D'oh!... I will be checking in to see if he still wants it done, though. Maybe even get some other clients off of him (word of mouth works really well)... Any case, that about sums up my job status, or lack thereof. |

I'm at work right now doing expense reports, book keeping, and oil, gas and mineral leases. General bitch for a law office =P Fun stuff.
This is just on a when-I'm-needed basis. I need a more regular job. But I also need to register for school in the fall, and that hasn't happened yet either |

I have no job yet but I'm hoping I can get a part time job sometime in this summer but my parents suggest that I wait until I get my driver's license which I'll probably get in less than 2 weeks before I start searching for a job.

Store Manager at Gamestop. Working anywhere from 44 to 50 hours a week. And this is on salary, so really, it doesn't matter how much I work, I'll get paid the same. That has its highs and lows.
