!

Italy beat Germany, 2-0. Two goals at the very last minute.

It was one of the closest and most aggressive matches I've ever seen. Neither side backed down, and both sides were relentless defenders.

Ball handling was excellent, but methinks there was a hell of a lot of fouls, mainly due to knockdowns. Almost went into penalties if Grosso hadn't delivered a goal in the second overtime.

It was an awesome game.

To be fair... Italy could have had FOUR goals in extra time if the first two didn't go off the post/bar. Second goal was a garbage goal but the first was VERY nice.

I picked Germany to win 2-1 so I was a little off.

Danielle - Beckam has fractured his metatarsal bone apparently or something, so it was perhaps a Portugese player fake diving on to it or something, what I loved most about Beckham coming off was the fact that they cut to Victoria in the crowd, and she hadn't realised, and was chatting to a girlfriend, said girlfriend nudged her and she immediately leapt up to applaud her husband. Very funny.

England may have been robbed of a deserved victory against Portugal, but the wuality of their playing was lacklustre throughout the tournament to say the least.

...Germany's out too.

So they'll be playing for third, correct? I hope they kick Portugal's ass.

Now... France vs. Italy. I didn't really predict either team to be in it at the end. Who to root for?

Italy shouldn't be there and only beat Ghana because they cheated.

I got to see the Italy vs. Germany match. It was kind of funny at the end. Not only did they get a goal in the second overtime, but another goal in the overage time just to kinda kick them in the face, so to speak.

Aren't you thinking of Australia, Elmo? I mean, the Ghana win was a win. Nothing more or less.

I can't cheer for Italy so... GO FRANCE.

The refing in italy vs. Germany was horrible. Some of the worst tackles were not carded (such as when Ballack was fouled, the ref. gave Germany advantage of the ball and Podolski got to a big chance. Judging by some of the cards he had given earlier in the match, he should definitely have given a yellow card for the tackle on Ballack there). Then, in the end, the ref. just stopped giving fouls at all. I remember the commentators at Norwegian TV going like this "...and that's a free kick to Italy... No? Why? (the Germans get posession of the ball and take it into Italy's half, an Italian tackles) ...and there's a free kick to Germany... NO? Not this either? (Italy counter-attacks, gets tackled) ...now that's got to be a... Nope, appearantly the ref feels there's not going to be any more fouls in this match"...

The worst thing, though, was that Germany should have had a penalty, even though they shouldn't have had a penalty. When a German player was "fouled" during a clash for a header inside the area and the ref. blew for a free kick from 17 meters. The situation that happened was hardly anything, and definitely not something that was worthy of calling a foul, based on what else the ref. let slide in the match... From that perspective, Germany should not have had a penalty... However, since the ref did blow for a foul, it should have been a penalty, since the situation happened more than a meter inside the area. Giving a free kick from 17 meter was a crep descicion, both from a German and an Italian perspective.

"Not only did they get a goal in the second overtime, but another goal in the overage time just to kinda kick them in the face, so to speak."

Yeah, coz when teams do a last mad-dash in the dying minutes in a desperate attempt to equalize, they never get a second goal against them because of them exposing their defence. Nope, no way, that has never happened. No sireeeee.

I'm Italian myself, but I'm pulling for France, simply because of Zinedine Zidane. It would just be great to have him go out on top, in his last pro football game ever.

I don't know who I'll be rooting for. I guess I'm just going to pick a team in the beginning and go with them.

I won't get to watch the 3rd place game, I'll be working tomorrow. But thank goodness, I will be home for the championship.

The list of 10 candidates for the Golden Ball (MVP) trophy:

Fabio Cannavaro (Italy), Maniche (Portugal), Michael Ballack (Germany), Andrea Pirlo (Italy), Gianluca Zambrotta (Italy), Thierry Henry (France), Gianluigi Buffon (Italy), Patrick Vieira (France), Miroslav Klose (Germany), Zinedine Zidane (France).

Interesting bunch of candidates... I can't see Maniche or Ballack winning it. Klose has an outside chance if he bangs in a goal or two on Saturday. I figure it'll go to a member of the winning team, so... Zidane for France (unless Henry has a career game) and either Buffon or Zambrotta for Italy.

The only way Zidane will win it if France lose is if they lose on a bad goal or get dumped on penalties. (...or if Zidane has a goal and an assist in a losing cause)

Buffon could very well win it if he stands on his head in the final.

Why? It didn't go to a member of the winning team the last two times (Kahn 2002, Ronaldo 1998). In fact, both in 2002 and 1998 it went to a player who had a good tournament, but messed it up in the final match and were given partial blame for his team's loss.

And, please don't call it MVP, it sounds so incredibly tacky.

Well, I put MVP in brackets because some people might not know WTF the award is about.

I just can't see any of the three from Germany/Portugal winning it, except possibly Klose. Not saying Ballack/Maniche didn't have good tournaments, but I can make more of an argument for others.

As far as the best young player of the World Cup goes, that honor went to Lukas Podolski of Germany. Cristiano Ronaldo was the favorite but one of the criteria for the award is fair play. It was STRONGLY hinted that Ronaldo's antics, including what happened when Wayne Rooney got sent off, cost him the award.

Apparently, Zidane is going to win the Golden Ball according to fans, but I'm not so sure. He's been out for one of the matches with dual yellows, and he has played great lately, but... I'd take him, or Klose for the award probably. Hard to be objective, Zidane is my favorite player, and I'm sure his situation of being able to go out on top will help him with votes but I'm not sure its 100% deserving yet. Depends on what happens in the 3rd place and Final games. Ballack and Lehmann aren't playing in the 3rd place game though, which irritates me.

After watching the Germany/Portugal game today, I came to a realization.

I really, really, REALLY hate Cristiano Ronaldo and can't wait to see him get his.
