First off, this story is a little different from what I've talked about in my last threads. Just a stupid little rant, nothing with real meat on it. I just had to get it out somewhere, and you guys so happen to be the best option for that right now

--

Earlier today, I was walking down the sidewalks of my neighborhood. Yes, I go outside.

I was wearing a green t-shirt that reads "Detroit: Where the weak are killed and eaten." I had black Nike basketball shorts on. I had a slight smile on my face. I walked upright, shoulders back. I had showered only a couple hours ago. In other words, I looked fine.

I see an older couple walking down the sidewalk towards me. I don't recognize them. They are taking up the whole sidewalk, so someone is going to have to move. You know that little shuffle people do to figure out who goes by who? You have done this hundreds of times in school hallways; you have to know what I'm talking about by now.

I look at the man in the couple, who is occupying the space I would walk through. He will not look me in the eyes. As we get closer, he shuffles and ends up cutting off his wife in order to make room for me.

I say "Hey," and raise my forearm in a friendly wave-like manner. I take care to have a clear and friendly tone without being too overpowering. He squeaks out a nervous "Hi" as he stumbles by.

---

On my way back, walking down the sidewalk again, I see this same older couple talking to a younger couple and their kid. They are taking up the all the sidewalk, and the kid has a wagon-type thing that further blocks the sidewalk. I just step out into the street as I go by, and give them a little wave. They don't return it.

Their kid stares at me as I go by. She's very young, maybe two years old. I wave at the kid and say "Hi" in a friendly tone, like how most people talk to kids. She doesn't wave back or talk, but just keeps staring at me. Now the couples are staring at me too.

I ask them all, "Does she wave? Can she talk yet?"

They grab her by the hand and scurry her away from me. She drags her wagon-thing behind her. They all leave without a word.

--

This alone is just a weird story, but it isn't an isolated incident. Every fucking time I go out, this happens to me once or twice. I don't know why people won't talk to me. I am 165 lbs, just under 6ft tall, and unathletic. I dress normally and take care of myself, and I act fairly friendly to people I've just met. (Much friendlier in real life than you probably think I am from this message board, anyways...) I am amongst the least dangerous-looking people I know, yet for some reason people are fucking afraid of me. Does this happen to everyone? Am I the only one who gets this kind of treatment?

I'm having trouble singling out a topic for this thread. I guess I'll go with this:

At what times have you felt socially awkward, or especially, what times have you accidentally made other people feel awkward? Have you ever met someone who inexplicably treats you like a leper, or is too afraid to do anything around you?

This has, and probaby will never happen to me since I'm 130some lbs, 5'7 or so. Yeah.

But honestly, I think that was just rude for them to do that.

I never look at people like that. Maybe if you're really decked out with tons of unsual clothing or whatever, I might give a "huh?" face. But on more than dozens of occations, I've met some incredibly nice people that some others did see as intimidating.

Elementary school, my best friend was the scary kid who was put in the office reguarly, had a rat tail, and an ear peicing (somewhat unsual at that age I guess). People thought he was scary, yet I was the geek with the Ninja Turtles obsession and did nothing but played videogames, we were best friends.

Sophomore year at high school I met some guy, who was probably at least like 6'4 or so, huge build, often wore those huge black jeans that connected to each other with chains, and he was by far one of the nicest guys I met in gym.

Looks can more than likely show a persons personality, but never put a full guess or judgement on that I'd say.

Egh. I don't know if any of that made sense, but oh well.

Some people are just weird and paranoid. Anyone who won't look you in the eye has something to hide himself, I say.

I get the same fucking reaction!!!
I hate it when people, especially girls, look at me like I'm going to kill or rape them. I'm a pretty big guy (almost 6'5") but hell, it doesn't mean anything.

Shit. That's just... Yeah. People seem to place too much emphasis on looks, I guess. I ususally wear casual, ligh shirts and walk around with my head up, and everyone I meet who isn't some egotistical asshole always says Hi back to me whenever I say hi. And jeez, I'm a big guy too. I'm taller than a lot of the adults around m neighborhood, but no-one here looks at me like i'm going to try and kill them.

I agree with the whole "People judge based on looks" thing, but that's why this is so puzzling to me... I don't look threatening! I don't understand it. Sometimes I get treated like a 7 foot biker with 50 piercings and tattoos, but I look like your average dude.

Can't say I have that problem, since I'm a gal, but it makes me go a bit. I meet a lot of people all the time, at work and at school and even at events I go to. There are very very few that make me react that way... and I certainly wouldn't feel threatened without a reason. People can judge, but... who would overreact like that?

Don't be so sure, I'm about 135, 6'3", and it happened to me back in high school. Though, there were a few reasons for that... I had a temper, and someone said that I brought a gun to school. That was an interesting situation, and one that I don't think anyone in the school didn't hear about.

But no, I didn't have one. It worked to my advantage not to advertise this fact, though.

I get it all the time. It is not a really big issue with me, you grow used to it when it happens constantly. I'm about 6 foot thereabouts and a really squat, heavy set sort of guy. I weigh ~215 lbs. So, yeah.

Apparently I'm pretty intimidating at work... but I don't try to be. In fact I try to be the opposite. They say it's b/c I'm very professional and most people aren't used to that. I dunno *shrug*.

I'm intimidated by everyone.

But if I'm directly spoken to, I do at least say hi, but I'm not good at making eye contact with other people, I dunno, I get embarassed or something, or I feel like I'm staring.

I doubt I intimidate anybody.

I get the shaft from both ends. I don't intimidate people at all, but they still look at me like I'm about to go for their throat.

I think I should be a little warmer in my address... There's only a few people I'm actually tender to nowadays in my approach. It's kind of a "reserved for a very special person" thing.

It's odd though. Adults are more afraid of me than young children. Those kids treat me like a giant walking tree. I take care of my freinds' kids on weekends and they'll climb on my arms and ask for things, "Can we go to the pool today!? Huh? Huh? Huh? Please?". If worse comes worse and I happen to make them cry, it's easy to change their minds and cheer them up. If I make a grown man cry, it's MUCH worse and it's happened before. It isn't cute for one I'm not gonna hug the man and two, it's harder to get them to forget everything.
