Does anyone know where the pointers for the message box text are, or where the code to run the message box is? I'm re-writing the code (this will be a future release)
to...
  • Allow messages longer than they are now

  • Proide a 'chat' interface, I.E. there will be a name in the corner

  • Editable with LM's own Message box editor (maybe)


Anyways, this is still in the planning stage, so... yeah.

ALSO: With BMF's HDMA system, I've come up with a few ideas to let BMF's system work in conjunction with SMW's HDMA. My new message code would run PalASM, and perhaps make use of SMW's HDMA mirror RAM address if BMF's doesn't already do that.

I have done something like you describe here back when I was doing SMW hacking (I am planning to start again during the upcoming summer break though). It was incompatible with LM's means of editing though...



It probably would look better with VFW and/or if I expanded it to at least 3 lines.

SInce your take the time to re-write the code, how abou makeing it so it can be compatable with other layer 2 objects.

@Blackhole: I remember seeing that thread on your RPG text back buried in the archived SMW hacking forum. I was quite impressed by it at the time. Still am.

Yeah, anyways, I have a few things planned out. The first version will move the box to the bottom 5 visible lines of the screen, and be three lines at a time, and scrolling. Two speed, hold down Y,A,X, or B to speed it up, and have no maximum length. It'll also have text formatting codes so you can change the font colour, and pause, and everything else.

I should think so. Just DMA the L3 data in the affected areas to my pick of unsed RAM... Then DMA my new data in... Yeah, no problem at all to do that.

Chaos Force: Summer break starts in three weeks in Germany, or in two weeks for me because I am headed for the ESE '06 in Spain.

Chaos Force, LemonPancake - yeah, present SMW message boxes have compatibility issues with layer 3 backgrounds thanks to them using, essentially, the same layer as them... my code solves that problem to the extent of only interferring with the data where the message box otherwise would be rather than the layer 3 BG on the whole screen.

Well, Layer 3 won't be affected by the message box too much.

This first version will be ugly though, guys. I'm more worried about functionality than looks at first.
