I've been reading a lot about The PlayStation 3 and I have some questions about it.

1. I've read that the analogue sensitivity has been increased from 8-bit to 10-bit. But is that per axis, per stick or per controller, and will this cause conflict with PS1 and PS2?

2. Will I be able to share files directly between my PC and the PS3? (Via LAN-cable, Ethernet, USB device?)

3. As LINEX is pre-installed, what's the reasonable time-frame before seeing something like a PS3 specific version of VLC media player?

4. What's the reasonablility of a Windows emulator/run time eviroment that will allow me to use Windows specific software effortlessly being made?

5. Despite reasons that make it seem unintelligible, will there still be mod kits?

6. Will looking into a Blu-ray laser still be a bad idea?

7. What will be the easiest way to transfer my PS2 memory card data to the PS3?

8. Just what is a Floating Point operation?

Most of your questions are kinda unanswerable at this point, unless you get your hand on some Sony employer. (Though i'm quite sure there will be modkits, sooner or later)

And for floating point, This might give you a idea.

I can answer #8... A floating-point operation is when a processor takes two decial numbers, such as 1.1 or 3.367876... and does math with them, as opposed to integer math where a processor can only take interger numbers, like 2 or 4.

1. Wait until the PS3 comes out and read the manual.

2. Perhaps, using Samba or NFS probably. Again, we'll see when the PS3 comes out.

3. You probably mean Linux (note that although "Linux" is usually shorthand for GNU/Linux, Sony might not be using GNU). Reasonable time-frame: Unknown. Sony has stated that the PS3 contains DRM and will not allow users to mess with the operating system (similar to TiVo and company using Linux but not letting people have the freedom to modify it).

4. Reasonability: Almost zero. You could pull off something similar to how Darwine runs programs on a PowerPC running Darwin/Mac OS X; that is, using QEMU to emulate an i386 and run the x86 version of Wine that way. With the DRM, and the few number of people that will probably want to do it, it lowers the chances of it happening unless you know how to hack.

5. Of course, there's DRM in the system!

6. Do you mean Blu-ray player? Nah, it's not a bad idea, but the PS3 should function as a player. Choose your poison.

7. Nobody knows!

8. See other posts.

1. i am not sure for button axis--i'm inclined to say per axis as you get more precision with the tilt of the stick. Probably PS1 controllers will still work with the if they only added bits to the left end of interpretation (just like you can always add 0's to a decimal number on its left side without changing the value)

2. possible if software is written for it, just like it was for PS2.

3. In the end, the PS3 is just another computer--so you just need a compiler to compile C source code to the CPU's language

4. Windows emulator on PS3? I think Win98 or before will run at full speed--I think it is a stretch saying WinXP will run at full speed and definately vista won't run at full speed

5. There probably is. Can you name one manufactured product that can't be modded?

6. Probably. Looking into any laser is bad, regardless of whether you see the light or not.

7. No clue

8. Already answered by Sukasa

First off, instead of using a screenshot of Wikipedia, you could have either linked to the article, or provided a snippet of text from it. Aside from bandwidth advantages, I'm not the only person annoyed (don't know anyone on the board, but I've met people on IRC and in real life) by both mechanisms that MS Windows uses to render fonts (though that one looks better than ClearFonts, or whatever it was called). Plus the background of the text clashes with the background of many board layouts.

Now to the real meat: It doesn't confirm (nor deny!) that anyone at home with hacking skills will be able to put their own programs on the PS3. It could just mean that you can get a lower-cost development kit for individuals (this also might only talk about new game studios of few people), provide cryptographic keys to get around the DRM with the know-how, or any other number of possibilities provided with that business-talk. You can always hope for the best; that should be that anyone with a PS3 immediately has the possibility to hack it (which might actually make it more popular than Wii or X360; time will tell).

Well this article leans towards comfirmation, presuming Phil Harrison knows what PCs are used for.

I decided to use a screenshot (4bpp 10KB gif hosted on photoalbum) to prevent confusion in the event the article was suddenly edited left or right. And I did try to be considerate by using my favorites menu crunch the text to prevent this thread from getting the dreaded horizontal scrollbar.
