We need a thread for this because Dynasty Warriors is teh win. It's awesome beat 'em up action that's like a fighting game at times, and it includes RPG and strategy elements as well. And it has a ton of badasses and pretty boys for me to fangirl over. Anyway...

Any other fans? Who do you like to play as? Who do you enjoy beating the crap out of? What's your opinion of the various games within the series?

DW5 is by far my favorite, and I hope that any sequels follow in its footsteps. I feel that it really refined the gameplay paradigm. The movesets are consistent in the sense that the charge attacks have the same basic function for each character. For example, C3 is always a multi-hit. This makes the movesets easy to learn. However, the actual moves vary widely between characters, so they all play differently. The battlefield gameplay is, in my opinion, the best in the series. Levels are smallish and don't take a bazillion years to complete. There are loads of peons, who fall easily, and the generals usually involve some effort to take down in a one-on-one fight (and some of them are royal pains in the ass), which I think is the way it ought to be. There's a new power-up - Musou Rage. You can keep one token with you, and when you activate it, your attack, defense, and speed are drastically increased for a short time. Enemy generals sometimes rage, which ups the challenge of one-on-one fights.

Speaking of challenge, in DW5, it's fair. Difficult maps are generally difficult because you have to kill a buttload of generals and run around making sure your bases are OK, not because of deus ex machina bullshit. I recently revisited DW4, and the preponderance of "ZOMG a high morale reinforcement just warped right next to my main camp RUN FORREST RUN" really chafed my ass. (As did the sleepy, boring feel of the battlefields, with small numbers of peons making a direct literal beeline at you one group at a time...feh.) There are a couple of maps where deus ex machina does happen, but it's not very common at all. I remember being frustrated with the game when I first got it because I'd been trying Xu Zhu as my starting character (I'd remembered him as being amusingly abusable in DW4 because he hit really fricking hard)...but it turned out that he's one of the worst in the game, so if anyone remembers that old thread, ignore it.

Oh, and here's my list of favorite characters to play.

Ma Chao - virtually untouchable when maxed out - I love to do speed runs of tough maps with him

Xiahou Dun - fricking badass, has a great sword moveset, sounds like angry Frylock

Zhang He - the most beeYOOtiful man in the Wei army...sparklies butterflies omg...oh yeah, and he's lightning fast

Lu Bu - an insanely powerful character...come on...he's a god of war...what more do you want

Cao Ren - if someone managed to weld the DNA of Mega Man, a football player, and Buster Beetle, this would be the result...he has a weird moveset that I have lots of fun with

Gan Ning - smartass pirate with some evil special moves

Sun Quan - he has the "standard sword-wielding ruler" moveset, but his launcher has a wide radius and sets enemies on fire...and depending on the costume, he has a weird flat hat or tiger-furred pimpdaddy gear

I own DW3 and X-TREEEEEEEEEEME!!! Legends for said DW3. It's fun stuff, just running through massive armies of peons and kicking ass.

I have little else to say here, though I played as Xiahou Dun last time I think.

I have to ban myself from DW games unless I have literally nothing to do for weeks on end. With matches lasting 30-60 minutes it adds up, especially since I just can't turn down the next one after I beat it (and occasionally lose.)

I've beaten DW4:Empires with different starting rulers. My first campaign made my very stressed out b/c I put a lot of hours into it and it was on hard mode (to prove a point to my roommate.) I ended up beating LuBu in the final battle with Zhen Ji. I almost died like 10 times... it was nerve wracking. But I managed to finish the final battle in one try. It's my favorite DW in terms of gameplay b/c of the RISK like approach to conquering China. The downfall is that you my unknowingly not trigger historic battles. E.g. the alliance against Dong Zhuo may or may not trigger, the Yellow Turban Rebellion I think triggers definitely, Chi Bi is hard to trigger if you alter the historical timeline even minutely. I didn't even know about Chi Bi until I began playing other DW games.

DW5 I played next but only briefly b/c I didn't own it. Then I played and beat DW4 with 3 different characters. I still haven't beaten it with Diao Chan. Haven't really picked it up in months though.

One of my complaints against DW games is the shitty buttrock. It does very little for me and totally conflicts with the ancient china motifs. Also, vs. modes aren't very fun b/c the battle system isn't very complex. Another thing that bothers me is that the opportunity for hidden items is not even hinted at anywhere in the game other than cryptic messages once in a while. i.e. I didn't know there were even special items to be had until I read an FAQ online that mentioned them. Unclear game goals is bad design (or maybe bad localization?)

I've only played DW3.. But Gan Ning and killing armies of weak things is fun. He's also awesome for moving from one place to another with the inf. musou for 10 seconds.

I like the rock and/or roll soundtrack. It might not go with the historical era, but it goes awesomely with beating the crap out of umpty bazillion bad guys. DW4 had some tracks that sounded like traditional Chinese music, and they just didn't do it for me.

Not easily discoverable hidden items annoy me, but DW5 did improve that problem somewhat. Many of the fourth weapons can be obtained by following specific instructions that you receive during a level. Sometimes the instructions are vague and/or poorly translated, but overall, they're better than they used to be.

Aaaaand I forgot another improvement of DW5. Each character's musou mode has voiced over story segments between the battles. At the very least, they're interesting. At best, they're hilarious. Xu Zhu sounds like a short bus reject, Zhang He is appropriately snotty and effeminate, and Wei Yan reminds me of Cookie Monster. "Liu Bei...die. Me...sad."
