Yoronosoku- ゛どぅせいあい゛の いみ 何 だ か。
(If you reply, could you also tell me when to use "nan" and "nani" respectively... me having no idea is the only reason I used the kanji for it) <blackhole89 used <<Rusty Frying Pan>> on Ailure> |

Originally posted by blackhole89 heheh..."douseiai" means homosexual love xD For your question with nan/nani, normaly it is written with the kanji, which does mean both. Though sometimes, it is just written out with the hirigana (which is spelled the same). The kanji when it is by itself is used for "nani" ("what"), but, you use it for "nan" when using it with other characters to make...like an example, to ask what time, nanji (何時 nan + ji kanji), or how many people, nannin (何人 nan + nin kanji). edit: blah! stupid unicode or whatever you are breaking. heh... I see.
The smallified -u- confused JWPCE, it seems... if I actually took my time to retype the word rather than using copy'n'paste, its kanji database would have likely led me to that result. About nan/nani... did I understand you right that in cases where it should say "nan" rather than "nani", you don't use the kanji but spell it out? |

You can use the kanji in any case. Sometimes, it is spelled out with hirigana for either one (sometimes, people just do it, maybe they don't know the kanji or another reason), it would be the same spelling, nani as ?? and nan as ?ん (used in the same was as you use the kanji, but you'd need to spell out the entire word then like "nanji", because most of the time you are never going to combine hirigana and kanji to make a full word, that's not proper)
edit: blaah..now, why is the board breaking characters? well, I think you can easily look up the hirigana, if it isn't showing up. (edited by Yoronosuku on 06-16-06 03:14 PM) |

Also, before desu and da, 2 of the Japanese coplar verbs (and possibly the other copular verbs too--I believe there are more), you use nan instead of nani. I'm sure you've often heard on anime where they say, nanda! That's an example of it.
But yes, do not mix kanji and hiragana spellings for compound words. If you don't know the kanji for a counter, for example, then when you make the number + counter, please spell out the whole thing, or it just doesn't look right (don't put kanji for the number and hiragana for the counter). Perhaps you can keep a list of kanji for the counters with you? (edited by beneficii on 06-16-06 03:58 PM) (edited by beneficii on 06-16-06 05:45 PM) |

Originally posted by beneficii I have only seen three animes so far, and all of them upon a recommendation of the "you GOT to see that" type. But yeah, I guess I know what you are talking about. The i is abandoned before particles as well, no? ("nan de") One more thing has to be contributed to the thread itself though. |
