I'm on a game rant again...

See...now I've played my share of fighters like most gamers...but the concept of handheld fighters never really went down for me well back in the day. They always tended to suck.

Even now, I'm going through some of my old ROMs and I'm looking at a few things in some now to back up my point. Let's take the game I love to death, Killer Instinct, for example and view its port to the GB:

Couple shots for those that dunno what it looks like:

An uppercut from under...
It's a victory...but!...it's awesome.
99HITULTRAZOMG

Now, it's definitely got the basics down for what the original from the arcade down but...the system has been downgraded so much that it has its flaws. Putting a six-button game to two is not an easy thing to do, much less to time combos off of aimlessly...and that's not even getting started if you haven't been initiated into the combo system from the original. It was bad enough before, now it's just ridiculous...especially for the fact that I can do what appears to be a 99-hit ultra in PRACTICE MODE that was a thing you shouldn't be able to do.

Actually, it was me doing the same combo linked together over and over 13 times or so and it somehow counted. Go figure.

Anyways, this is a perfect example of how to kill a good game. Bad porting. Now, I continued to believe that most GB-type fighters sucked until I started browsing around further. Took me until last month or so to finally find something that actually kicked ass for a fighter.

Shots plz:

If he goes over, that's gonna hurt.
That too.
Translations are funny.

Now, besides the fact that I've heard Battle Arena Toshiden was absolute shit (these are rumours, of course, I haven't played it to verify), the GB variant was quite good. Still felt like it was porting a four button game to two, but it did it in a way that it worked out well. Very hit oriented, like KI, but it flowed a lot better than the incredible work you had to put in for GB KI as compared to this. Even button mashing fast will more than likely net you a 4 hit combo if you're lucky enough to time it before the opponent presses back to dodge.

Only thing I really had problems with was the incentive to knock your opponent over the edge to get a Ring Out. It's a nice addition and it can be changed or cancelled completely...but the default is 3 steps on the edge and you're out. You get open for a 3-hit combo or more on the side and you're gone. That makes for some pretty short battles. :\ Luckily, as I said, it can be cancelled and I as I said the rest of the game makes up for it.

I dunno, maybe I'm not looking hard enough...but I haven't found a decent handheld fighter past BAT. Samurai Shodown was close but it didn't flow as well as BAT did.

So yea, post or give me a sea of dumbfounded faces.

Because there is no Guilty Gear game for a handheld system, I will calmly pass this thread by with the minimum in commentary.

There's one on WSC and GBA. They're ok, but nothing special. However, Capcom vs. SNK and The Last Blade are superb fighters on NGPC. To date, probably the best two portable fghters. Especially The Last Blade, which nothing else on a portable can even compare to it.

Actually, I noted that SNK vs. Capcom was a pretty decent fighter on the Neo Geo Pocket. Only problem was getting a decent emulator that didn't go piss slow playing it (it's still not perfect here).

NGPC emulators aren't very good, but you can get a NGPC and 6 games for about $50-75 U.S.

I'll add one to the list...

Yeah... this one's weird. There's only 5 robots but the AI gets tougher as you go along and is pretty cheap at some points. The Quest Mode (Start/Continue) basically sees you pick a robot and defeat people around the map to obtain credits to upgrade your robot. Pretty simple although they do end up tossing some curveballs your way later on. 1P/VS are what you'd think they are.

It's not a BAD game or anything, but note that it was released around the time the GBC was being released in the first place, so don't expect a masterpiece.

I noticed Mortal Kombat for GBA is really... lacking. The sound is cheap, the graphics have extra little pixels around the edges, and there's no fatalities.

I used to own Mortal Kombat 3 for the GB. It was a joke. Plain and simple. And Killer Instinct...something tells me that was only ported because Rare was on a roll with their pretty little "graphics downgrader". Seriously, I remmeber seeing in a video put out by Nintendo that for DKC, they used special softwar to make modles, and it would then lower it to have as many colors as the system they needed it for allowed. I bet they were just like "HEY LETS PUT ALL OUR SNES MODLES THROUGH AS 4 COLORS" and decided to port everything. It also uses the Donkey Kong Land font, so tak that as you will

Most handheld fighters suck. But then rarely, you'll get one that is pretty good. Though I still have yet to find one that will keep me interested for a logn time, such as Smash Bros. and Soul Calibur.
