So, what this is about: When I first got my computer and set it all up it used to be super fast. I would be logged into MSN before the rest of the programs would be loaded at startup. Like *Clicks username ... BLING *. And now, one year later, I have to wait atleast 2 minutes before the ethernet modem is done doing stuff with Windows, because it just won't do anything else. (You'll see two computer screens blinking for a time, then when it's done they disappear and Windows continues loading the rest) Also, just now, to open lololol it took about one minute just to open it. I still have plenty of HDD space left, always atleast 500 MB of free RAM and my setup should be powerful enough. I mean it USED to be fast. So, does anyone have any idea what could cause this? I'm scanning with AVG right now but I don't suspect a virus. Seeing how I always have 2 anti virus programs running (AVG and Avast). Windows. I'm not joking, it just seems to get sluggish over time for no apparent reason. I have a computer with Windows XP not connected to any network, applications are installed rarely (aka usually only when Windows is), yet after about six months it just becomes unbearably slow and the only "solution" is to reinstall 
Several people tell me this happens with their Windows machines too, apparently only about 1 of every 1000 people don't experience it. |

| Because ofthe same problem you mentioned I make sure to partition all my files cause I know that in 3 to 4 months time I'm gonna have to reinstall windows. It gets annoying but can't be avoided. | |||

| You should defrag your HDD. Also get Ad-Aware and run a complete spyware scan. It's free. If that fails, well, get a re-install like Free-DOS + said. | |||

| run msconfig and look at all the applications that are auto running when your computer starts up. Uncheck pretty much all applications other the ones that are necessary for your computer to function. I sped up my friend's computer by about 20 fold (windows xp pro) by doing this. Programs that are put into memory at startup seem to slow down win xp like no other, even if you quit them and attempt to free up that memory.
edit: I'd also suggest not having any anti virus programs running at all times. Use them to scan periodically, also make sure these are removed from your automatically loaded programs at startup. (edited by MathOnNapkins on 05-26-06 03:03 AM) |

| This happened to me just last Tuesday. The last thing I did before shutting my laptop down was I downloaded an mp3. Then, it took about 10 minutes to boot up when I turned my computer on a few hours later.
I already tried the msconfig thing. I ran the Disk Cleanup Utility, during which time I got a message saying: Files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain systme stability, Windows must restore the original versions of these files. I already ran a few Anti-Virus programs and Spyware & Adware Removal programs, but no luck. I'm thinking of doing the Ctrl+F11 thing to restore my laptop to its factory settings.  Probably the best option too, it could fix a number of other problems I'm having, mainly concerning Windows Media Player.  |

| That's a nasty cough you've got there, it almost sounds like a word in the middle!
Plus, it's generally a good idea to shut down programs that actively use the Internet connection (IM, BitTorrent, etc) before hibernating. |

| BTW, the best way to fix problems with Windows Media is to get rid of it. Winamp for music, VLC for movies, Media Player Classic for the WMVs that VLC won't play. |

| The computer I have WinXP installed on has WMP, IE, and a bunch of other useless crap removed. It's a lot smaller, slightly faster, and still just as crash-prone. ;P | |||

Just posting to say, I burned all of My Documents to blank DVDs (it took 4), restored it to how it was on Day 1, and everything's working perfectly now, including WMP. 
Now all that's left to do is take a few hours to copy everything back from the DVDs. _¬ |
