So, I might feel like posting a thread like this once in a while. I have a lot of strenghts, I can say that easily. I also have a weakness, and this one is obviously (as you might have guessed by uh.... looking at the thread title) the little confidence I have.
Everytime I do something (unless I've been doing it for a long time), I'm always unsure of myself (okay, it can be a good thing, sometimes, since you usually make less mistakes). Anyway... Recently, I've began to work at a Tim Horton's, my job being baker. Now, my other weakness (which helps me being unsure) comes into play: I have a half-shitty memory (or I may think). I am never unsure of what I must do, the topings for some kind of donuts, how much should be made, etc. Now, I understand that some stuff you only get through experience. However, other stuff that I could get quite easily I can't seem to be sure of. Which sucks, because I do my work slower. Now, that leads that some kind of equation: Me working slower = having stuff to do that I may not remember = possibly being annoying -or- working even slower = more stress on me = makes the job less fun. Now, this leads me to a question: Anything to just help me boost my confidence? Nothing miraculous. Just something to help. This + Experience should help me greatly. |

YOU KICK ASS DARKSLAYA LIKE AWESOMEST DUDE EVER ZOMG
Eh, I know how it is to not have any confidence in yourself or your work. You just have to start small in taking risks, and work your way up. Make the effort to memorize the recipes at work, write down the procedure a few times, and work your way up. Make half of a certain item by memory, and then check and make sure it's right. Or something like that, you know? Once you get better, you'll have more confidence, which means more fun. Just aim for that. |

Everything works better when you're feeling more confident. It's hard as heck to get there in the first place, but once you trust in your abilities, things will always work better for you.
On the bright side, being confident doesn't have to be with just one specific thing -- yes, you can be confident in your abilities as a baker and completely unsure in your abilities as a brain surgeon, but the more confidence you have at one thing, the more you will have at everything else in general. So you can practice confidence by doing something completely different. Personally, I have two completely different recomendations: -- Take a weekend off to go hit the clubs at the next town over. Nothing builds confidence like flirting with people you've never met. -- Take a martial art. Nothing builds confidence like knowing how to kill a man with your bare hands. |

Originally posted by 1159 That was really thoughtful of you. This situation sounds like me. The problem is this. The reason you don't feel confident with yourself is, more than likely, lack of concentration. You might have your mind on other matters that haunt, help, or distract your mind. You remember what you want to remember. Don't be ashamed to ask your employer for help, take your time off and go ask him for the knowledge you lack. Practice this knowledge. |

Originally posted by DarkSlaya Experience is big. Sometimes people do something wrong and take it as a blow to their confidence, which is wrong. No matter how confident you are, you still have to see things as they are. For example, I know there is no way I could just, say, pick up a SMB rom and hack a new game out of it. I know jack shit about how that kind of thing works. If I tried it and fucked it up, it shouldn't come as a blow to me, but as an expected setback. A more realistic goal would be "If I keep at it and learn from my mistakes I'll be good at it one day." Thinking you are already great at everything is just arrogance; Thinking you can be great at anything is true confidence. Confidence is also a bit of a catch 22. Low confidence breeds worse confidence, and high confidence breeds even better confidence. You just have to go out on a wing and believe that you can do anything if you really set yourself to it. It's not something you can fix overnight; It needs lots and lots of experience to back it up. |
