I have a few MP3s which play fine but have their length set wrong (as much as 45 minutes, when they're really only 3-4). Every player shows this incorrect time; Winamp's remaining time counts down very fast and skips a few minutes at a time. It's a minor annoyance since it prevents me from being able to determine how long a group of songs is by selecting them all in Winamp. Is there anything I can do about it without just re-encoding the file?

Are the MP3s that are giving you the problem VBR? I did a google search for "mp3s with incorrect lengths in winamp" which came up with something (for the first result) about it being a problem with the file's headers The solution given there is to run VBRFix, which can be found here.

From what I've seen so far, CBR MP3s are completely immune to this type of problem, so if yours are, and the times are still incorrect, you may be in a bit more trouble than you originally thought regarding finding a solution to this problem, unless you were to reencode one of the files and see if that helps

Anyways, I'd give that program a try. It may help, and it may not, but there's only one way to find out

Well I'll try that, but first I have to get this fixed. Winamp won't even play the files without a working sound driver.

[edit] I tried it anyway.

Could you try seeing what file has to say about the file? Sometimes it can unmystify some weird file incompatibilities by revealing what's in the file (very useful when you download a video, your media player can't guess the correct codec, use file and manually tell the player what codec the video uses).

Also, perhaps you can try to take a crack into the source code and figure out what the program is doing, and why it is doing it.
