Originally I took little interest in ExGFX, partly because I didn't know of anything unique worth using, and partly I didn't know how to actually use it correctly. But as I took a look at my work after not touching it for a good few months, I decided to give it another shot. Success! Since I managed to get ExGFX and animations working correctly, I thought it might be worth a shot to try drawing some new graphics myself (mostly from scratch). All I've planned on at the moment is new foreground stuff, and before I put a ton of time into it, I'd like to get some feedback. This is the first set I've "finished" more or less, a new forest FG trying for more of a floral/jungle feel. Comments and the like would be appreciated (constructive criticism is a GOOD thing), if something's not right, I'll see if I can work it out.

(The weird-looking stuff at the very top of the pics is just something that happened when taking the shots, not actually part of them)

Of the four types of flowers on the ground, two of them (the tall yellow/orange and short red ones) are given priority so stuff goes behind them instead of in front...it's like depth or something! :o

Anything to change? Maybe add something? I have a little space left in the ExGFX file and am leaning toward some more variety in the flat ground tiles (too many red flowers is bad for the Mimigas!) The colors look kinda washed out in the shots, but meh. I haven't changed anything from the default palette yet, so I'm open to suggestions on that as well.

The treetop looks too artificial. If you removed the flat parts at the bottom of it and add in some leaves to thickin it up it would look a lot better with the detailed ground.

Otherwise, not bad. Very nice.

This is probably just me being picky... but could the ledges be any more rounded without having it be too misleading? If not, it still works, but it seems a bit overly angular for underbrush.

Otherwise, it looks very nice, aside from what the other guy said.

Yeah, I agree with them. This is way too jagged, and the leaves just don't look right at all.

I thought the leaves looked great, myself.
All that dirt in between and below the walking area of the fg graphics is all the standard brown dirt. Perhaps some more flowers (maybe another color) could be placed throughout, and some leaf patches. If that's at all possible anyway.

Overall very impressive, especially since it's hand-drawn.

They look very good but to many flowers can be confusing.

I also think that a bit more variety in the flowers, more colors and less flatness in the treetops, possibly some FG grass that sticks up out of the ground to make a bit more of an impression (if he's in some sort of jungle thing, he should be walking through at least a little bit of grass sticking out of the ground and not just those occasional above-ground flowers), and yeah, a bit less jagged-ness. Then, it'd be one hell of a kickass level layout.

MOstly what these other guys have said, and more colour choices for the flowers in the ledge tiles. Yes, I know that will likely take another palette row, but if you can spare it, that would spice up your deign a helluva lot.

Alright, I made some revisions after reading replies yesterday (which was all but the last two posts). I rounded off the corners a bit, something I was unsure of at first since I've never liked the effect of standing on "nothing" when on the edge of something. Removed the flat areas of the treetops, added some more variety to the dirt part of the ground. Then, I took some larger screenshots to try and get the closest to an actual in-game view I could. Results:

Better at all? After reading the most recent posts, I'm going to see if I can get a little more variety in the currently-all-red flowers without them looking like hell. I'll give the "tall grass" thing a shot as well and see how it comes out. One question, though:

Could you possibly elaborate on what you feel isn't right about the leaves? I'm not entirely happy with them, but they really have been kind of a pain. A little direction on what could be better would really help.
