So I pose two questions for you.

What files must you have to play a PS2 emualtor? (Names, not links, if the software/setup/plugins is illegal.) What emulator works best?

Has anyone successfully burning a PS2 ISO to a CD to run in the PS2?

I'm looking to play Gradius 5. I was eight and unaware of this game, and kind of missed the release. So, help a guy?

A ps2 emulator firstly needs a bios. You can rip the bios yourself from your ps2 or you can download one from some illegal site somewhere. Not telling where...

From what I was able to find, there are two BIOS files required SCPH10000.bin and ROM1.bin. I was only able to find the former in a quick search with google, and when trying to extract the other file, Winzip gives me a CRC error, so hopefully you have more luck there

There don't seem to be any other required files than that, unless of course you were expected to download video / audio plugins and such. Those are easy to find anyways.

As for emulators, I was able to find the names of three PCSX2, NeutrinoSX2, and PS2emu. Both PCSX2 and NeutrinoSX2 seem to only be able to play demos, so unless changes have been made, and the site I'm looking at hasn't been updated in a while, it seems PS2emu is going to be your only choice. There's a screenshot shown of the title screen of Super Bust-a-Move, but who knows? Maybe it can only get so far as to display the title screen I think it's safe to say that at present, unless otherwise stated, it's safe to assume that no PS2 emulator is currently able to play commecial games.

Honestly, I'd say your best current bet is to burn whatever ISO to CD, then do what's required to get it working in your PS2. I was able to find a site that details how to get things working without actually having to worry about getting a modchip installed on your PS2, but... it seems you'd rather find it yourself

Here's a hint: it's like saying "Playstation" except "Play" is replaced by a word beginning with E. It fits into the whole theme of finding overlooked security holes and such, and that's the only help you're getting. That may be too much of a hint already

Good luck

I've just downloaded the oversized file and I'm stuck. What the hell is an MDF and MDS file?

gradius34.mdf

gradius34.mds

Any kind of emulator for this or what?

I don't know how to really describe them, but you can mount them using either Alcohol 52 or 120%, then interact with them just as if a CD was loaded in your CD drive. Basically, the bigger file (I'm pretty sure it's the one with .mds as the extension) is an image of the CD, and the .mdf file is used to mount the image.

So, to answer your question, the "emulator" for those files is either Alcohol 52 or 120% (or any other CD image mounting program you prefer). From there, just treat them as if they were a CD inserted in the drive.

Hopefully that helps

I would recommend Daemon Tools to mount your images, as it takes less proccesing power than Alcohol does.

You're misunderstanding See, when you install Alcohol, Daemon Tools, or whatever program of that sort that you choose, it'll create a virtual CD drive (if that's the proper way to describe it). From there, you can use the .mdf and .mds files in conjuction with your program of choice to trick the computer into thinking there's a CD inserted in the virtual drive, that CD being your .mdf or .mds file.

Try reading here, if that's still confusing (and it sort of seems like it), and if that doesn't work, well, we can always give you a step-by-step set of instructions as to what needs to be done with those files

Thank you for your patience

Okay, I got the .MDF mounted onto the virtual drive (J). Can you list everything else I need to do? Do I need to buy a 5$ DVD to burn it onto?

Well, from here, you can either try to run the game in your emulator of choice, and if you want to do that, look through the menus for a "Load CD" function of sorts. However, as we've already covered, most current PS2 emulators aren't able to play commercial games properly, so it may just be better to burn the game.

I was able to find something that says DVD Decrypter works well for the types of files you have, provided it's in "ISO WRITE" mode, but apparently Alcohol 120% is designed to be used to burn those filetypes, so it might be worth it to do a bit of research of your own, just so you don't go out, buy a blank DVD, and burn the game to it, only to find that you missed a step that's crucial to having the game work properly

Hopefully you don't mind links now, as I just found a quick tutorial on burning those filetypes using Alcohol 120%, that seems to be geared specifically towards PS2. It can be found here

That sounds like it'd work without problems, but you're going to have to give it a try for yourself to see I would, but I don't have a DVD burner

Sorry for dragging you through all the trouble of getting the image mounted, even though it's likely not going to be needed in the end
Cynthia

Uh-huh.

Only one emulator plays games - PCSX2. Compatibility isn't that bad but don't forget that speeds are generally slow. Final Fantasy X, for example, runs but you need a high-end computer to have it at a playable (but not perfect) speed.

PCSX2 is well-known, however, for having near-perfect compatibility for Nippon Ichi games - if you have a decent PC, you could be running stuff like Disgaea at high or full speed.

Asked my dad about getting a DVD burner, but...

Are .ELF files really needed? Because every time I try to run the game, I get that annoying "Program has encountered a problem and needs to close." What am I doing wrong?

The program freezes for a moment and there is text that reads "Restarting", and then it closes, failing to open the file.

What program gives you that message, exactly? I'd assume it's the emulator, but you've made no indication as to whether it is or not

As far as .elf files go, it seems they are necessary. If my memory serves me correctly, it stands for "Executable Linking File" (or possibly format), which, to describe it quickly, is the PS2's version of executable files. Obviously they don't work in the same way as executable files on a computer, but I have a feeling their overall importance is just as great as it would be on a computer.

I have "ATV Offroad Fury 3" for the PS2 here in my computer's CD drive (my Dad found the game on the side of the road and brought it home, although I don't know why, seeing as we don't own a PS2), and the only .elf file I can find on it is "NTGUI.ELF", in the "NETGUI" directory of the CD, so maybe they're not after all

I'd like to be able to give you a definite answer, but at present, I've yet to find anything that'll help in that direction.

Well, the site I found specifically states that the method(s) listed there only work on one model of the PS2. The larger one (I'm not sure if there's an official name for it or anything). If you've got one of the newer, slimmer models, you're unfortunately out of luck Actually, they list 3 different methods, none of which involve a modchip, but still, everything depends on the model of PS2 you have.

To make things easier, the site is exploitstation.com. The page that lists those methods can be accessed via the Exploit FAQ "button". I've read through the thing a couple times, and the methods sound real enough to me, but give it a look for yourself and see what you think

So I need a specific ELF file floating around the net?

This may take more time than I thought.

If anyone could PM me a place with a site to video game ELF files, I'd be happy beyond words because searching has gone bad. I can't find a damn thing.
