That's the whole ordeal here. All the Nintendo fanboys will buy this console because they're, well, fanboys. But Nintendo needs to make some revenue here, or they'll go bust. They're currently only making money from the Gameboy/DS series. This console really needs to hit home with a wider audience, or Nintendo might pull a Sega and stop making consoles altogether.

They're losing money on the Cube? I thought they were still profiting...

I don't think the important thing is how much of the market someone holds, but instead how much money they make. It's theoretically possible to hold onto 1% of the market and still make enough money to continue (hence explaining why companies that make crappy games still keep making them and don't go bust).

Nintendo Why... I do like the sound of that.

I'd love if they called it poop. Giving it a name that's supposed to sound good but actually sounds stupid is one thing. Giving it a name that's supposed to sound stupid is another.

Could be losing money in the US and profiting in Japan.

This is a broken argument though. I know some of the hardest core fanboys who hate the name, but are still buying it because of what a good system it could very well be. Nintendo is never going to pull a Sega, and by reading your past posts in the other thread, YOU appear to be the fanboy here. I am not trying to start trouble, I am not trying to be a fanGIRL (and if you call me that, I will kill you, I own more games and consoles than you probably ever will and many NOT Nintendo), but after reading your posts I can only be quiet for so long because it REALLY bugs me when people say that sort of thing.

Do you even have a way to back this up? You just assume that Nintendo is going to flop like Sega. Look at the over-all picture. Nintendo continues to be a giant in Japan. If American gamers aren't mature enough to purchase a console because they don't like the name, it isn't going to harm them, -at all-. They will sell in Japan and most of their money comes from there. It is because of this they are no where near in danger of becoming like Sega. So what the hell? Don't say things you don't know anything about, you'll get people upset.

Well first of all I can't believe I said half of that, see what insomnia does to you? (and now I'm making excuses but I guess I have none..) There might have been a time when people thought this about Sega, but when it actualy did happen I was not very surprised at all. Nintendo is no where near a stage where I wouldn't be surprised if they did that. I'm not a fangirl, so to be fair, I'll happily state that I don't see any of the 3 competing companies (Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft) pulling a Sega any time soon. I was just wondering how he even came up with the logic when Nintendo hardware is one of the top selling game-related merchandise in Japan right now. It just puzzled me

Edit: and to say my stance on all of this Wii business, I do not care. It will not make me enjoy the games any less, it will not make me enjoy the console any less, and since when was something bad just because it was different?

I never said I wasn't a fanboy, nor did I say the fanboys wouldn't buy the console. I just reckon that Nintendo need to reach a broader audience than their fans. The fact remains that Nintendo is still competing in a global context, so success in one country only does not ensure market profit as Nintendo will also be marketing their console in many other countries. And I definantly don't assume Nintendo is going to flop, but that may be a possibility.

See, the name Wii is working- it's elicted all sorts of comments even outside of video game boards- one of my friends from school who I never really take video games with brought the name up recently... and all publicity is good publicity.

Not necessarily. For example, if there was a scandal in congress, that'd be bad publicity for them to have. Similarly, this horrid new name is giving Nintendo some time in the negative spotlight. It just isn't going to work as well as Revolution did (which, was widely accepted as the most creative name of all the next-gen consoles)..

As far as I know, Nintendo made a name. This is different from sleeping with a congresswoman. Your analogy does not apply.

Actually, it applies quite well.

Wii isn't bad. But it just allows me to make jokes. I mean, come on...Gaystation 3, Butt-SeX-Box ReachAround and...Wii. They've covered it themselves this time.

but who cares what its called, if they set themselves up to be made fun of, etc? If I had any say in the company I'd motion to rename the console Doodookaka 64. The games would be exactly of the same and it is not like you hear of titles such as "Mario Wii". And even if they did, it would only be your loss if you did not play it because of the name. I don't see what the fuss is--okay so you like revolution better. They didn't say they changed the system, just what its called. Ever heard of don't judge a book by its cover? Don't judge a console by its name

Great, now you gave the slashdot trolls mataerial.

Eh, I dunno. Nintendo is hardly a threatend company. Sony is reporting losses (could be said, their biggest revanue isn't from their console deparment) and Microsofts stock hardly grown since year 2000.

Besides I think I blame the DS for Nintendo to dare going little unique. It might not have beat GBA, but it did sell more than expected and beat the competitors.

Seems like the GBA is going to be like the NES, which did live long into the SNES generation IIRC. :/
