Well, practically half the Aussie team is of Croatian stock and there's a few former Aussies running around for the Croatian side, so that should make things interesting.

Brazil... ehh, we play them first, I don't think it's beyond the realms of possibility that we could cause a stunning upset. We *did* beat them in a Confederations Cup match a couple of years ago! Obviously we'll probably lose, but, totally written off, first match, you never ever know, maybe they're ripe for an upset. If they're going to drop a match early on it may well be against us.

Japan... Japan we play strangely often, and they always beat us for some reason, be it in friendlies or tournaments. Either we struggle with their game (they seem a hell of a lot more team-oriented and precise than some of the, uh, flashier European and South American sides) or they're just a lot better than us. I'd have been happier with *any* other side from that Asia/America section of the draw except possibly Korea.

Disappointed at the lack of a USA-Iran matchup or a Serbia-Croatia one.

Australia is 125/1 to win the WC. I'm very tempted to throw down ten bucks at those odds.

I'm still curious as to what explaination Bookworm and Phantomrain have as to why outside of America, practically everyone accepts evolution and an old earth and doesn't buy into their brand of mumbo jumbo.

Why is it only some American christians who still cling to young earth creationism or some variation on the theme, and basically no-one else?

They're probably, for various reasons, far less likely to take it literally. I should think.

Either way.

I'm not aware of a particularly strong anti-science streak in Judaism, and Islam probably has very different attitudes to science as well, given that the rise of Islam coincided with a scientific golden age.

But even limiting it to Christian countries, why is it only in America where this sort of dogged literalism holds any sway?

I don't know, but I'm sure you or someone else will embrace the opportunity to criticize Christianity and America at the same time!

Right, because I hate America and all that. You got me, well played old bean.

Posted on 12-18-05 01:38 AM, in What do you think about this "war on Xmas"? Link
Can't take credit for this, but it's brilliant. Quite unlike the delusional complaints in this thread... but then, bitching about the bogeyman of "political correctness" is usually bullshit, so whatever.

WAR ON CHRISTMAS

Much has been made of the so-called “War on Christmas” this year. And as a card carrying member of the liberal conspiracy, let me tell you that it’s true. We are at war with Christmas. But what you may not know is WHY we are at war. I don’t want to scare you, but it’s time you learned something very disturbing.

Christmas has weapons of mass destruction.

There are mobile labs all over the North Pole set up with holiday anthrax just waiting to be deployed. And Christmas’ ties with Al-Qaeda are clear. Al-Qaeda is currently operating in the Middle East, the exact same place Christmas began operating over 2000 years ago. We can confirm this through our reliable source, Ru’Dulf Ran’Dier. Also, we have captured some elves, a couple of gnomes, and a midget and are currently subjecting them to extreme interrogation in covert prisons. However, we do deny the rumors that we are flushing pages of “ ’Twas the Night Before Christmas” down toilets.

The impact of Christmas on society can not be underestimated. Christmas has been know to place agents in shopping malls, in front of grocery stores, and at various Christmas parties (now to be known as “Freedom Parties”), A suspected Christmas operative was seen following the Macy’s Thanksgiving day parade in a makeshift assault vehicle. Some Christmas operatives have even been known to enter citizen’s homes through their chimneys. In order to prevent this, the government recommends sealing your chimney with Saran Wrap and Duct Tape.

We cannot wait for this year’s winter wonderland to be a nuclear winter wonderland. An invasion of Christmas will begin immediately, with thousands of troops being sent to the North Pole immediately, and winter weather gear to be sent at an undetermined date in the future. Our initial plan is to bomb Christmas so much that they will be both shocked and awed. Then, when we occupy the North Pole, we will be greeted as liberators by the elves. It is important that we send hundreds of thousands of troops, and hundreds of billions of dollars, so that we can fight the war on Christmas there, instead of here, where it might interfere with holiday shopping. We will bring democracy to Christmas, whether the majority of them want us there or not. But honestly, we don’t expect it to last very long.

In order to keep you up to date on the current threat that Christmas has on the nation, we have developed a color coded alert system. Currently, the threat is green, or “Holly”. However at any moment, our poll numbers could slip, at which point we’re pretty sure the threat will rise to red, or “Jolly”.

So be strong America. Deck your halls with boughs of holly, forming a defensive perimeter around your borders as well. Peace on Earth (well, our part) and Goodwill to Men (most of them). Americhristmas to all, and to all a good night.

Well yeah it's that time of year.

10. Wolfmother - Wolfmother - Yeah, couldn't not throw this in cos it's good, though I'm getting bloody sick of hearing about it.

9. Beck - Guero - Maybe it's not new territory, but it's still Beck and the man's just that good. Guero sounds like a return to form to me, good to see he's not all sad now.

8. Decoder Ring - Fractions - Probably the best thing released from this country this year, Wolfmother's cool but they're still just basically a Zeppelin cover band that doesn't actually do covers.

7. Manic Street Preachers - The Holy Bible (10th anniversary re-release) - Yeah it's a re-release, but I only heard it this year and it's fucking brilliant.

6. Mountain Goats - Sunset Tree - Still amazes me how much emotion and energy he can wrest from just an accoustic guitar and some background instrumentation.

5. Architecture in Helsinki - In Case We Die - I take back what I said about Decoder Ring, this was the best Australian release of the year. An octet on triple espresso with a list of instruments as long as your arm, just pure bliss. BLISS.

4. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Yes, I'm a sucker for things that're obviously influenced by Talking Heads, and the fact that they sound like a really cool/uncool fusion of both the Heads and Neutral Milk Hotel makes it even better.

3. Andrew Bird - The Mysterious Production of Eggs - The man's a revelation, everyone should love him.

2. the Arcade Fire - Funeral - Yeah it's probably a 2004 lbum but it didn't see the light of day in Australia til early '05. Great stuff, powerful and moving, which is difficult, if you're not a metal dork prone to being "moved" by metal.

1. The Decemberists - Picaresque - We need more storytelling bands. The Bagman's Gambit sends chills down my spine every time I listen to it. Album of the year, for me.

I don't think you could successfully argue that the US Constitutional protection of freedom of speech protects the right to force schools to teach pseudoscientific idiocy in their cirriculum.

Because let's be perfectly clear here, Intelligent Design is idiocy. Fuck mincing words about "beliefs" and stuff, Intelligent Design is pseudoscientific religious mumbo jumbo, it is aimed at getting a foot in the door in the ludicrous fight for Creationism. Creationism is unscientific, and flies in the face of all of modern biology, geology, not to mention a host of other sciences.

There is no other reason to advocate teaching Intelligent Design, unless you actually believe they should teach Young Eaarth Creationism. ID has no justification other than as a stepping stone to Creationism and biblical literalism.
