It's not. That's just an ordinary birthday bag with the "Touch Generations" logo on it. I've seen that exact same pattern used on wrapping paper.

Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation has just hit stores in the United States. If you don't have your copy, get one now.

For those who have been dead these past 15 years, Super Robot Wars is Banpresto's long-running "All-Star Giant Robot Heroes To The Rescue": basically gathering up the most famous, awesome mecha from across the Japanese televised pantheon and putting them all in one game, complete with zany crossover stories to connect them all. The franchise has spread across multiple platforms, continuities and series, but the one place it has never hit - until now - is the world outside Japan.

And for good reason.

"All-Star Cartoon Heroes To The Rescue", the source of my earlier joke, was a one-shot anti-drug special featuring cartoon characters from enough disparate sources to make any kid grin ear to ear and any adult smart enough to understand its significance drop his jaw in a universal "how the...?". Problem was, they made the mistake of using Garfield. The company behind the Garfield cartoon gave the OK; Jim Davis did not. The special vanished into copyright oblivion after just one airing, never to be seen again. Now take that scenario and multiply it by Mazinger Z, Mobile Suit Gundam, Neon Genesis Evangelion and...oh, you know where this is going. Bringing a SRW game to the United States would entail a massive vanity project the likes of which have never been seen before in the legitimate game localization world: an ungodly licensing effort, doling out potentially millions to licensors in both the U.S. and Japan for the rights to use all these series. This is why Super Robot Wars has, until now, been purely the realm of fan translation: nobody has been crazy enough to try it.

The heroes of this story have lurked behind the scenes for quite some time. Never quite as prominent as their "canon" brethren but still awesome in their own right, the Banpresto Originals have long taken the helm of the Super Robot Wars series, filling the role of unbiased protagonist. Now imagine what would happen if the Originals were all treated like the myriad machines stealing the spotlight in the rest of the series. That's right...enter Original Generation 1 & 2, two GBA games (and their impending PS2 remake, yet to be announced for the U.S.) based solely around the extensive repertoire of giant robots and heroes Banpresto has invented for themselves. They own the rights to all the mecha, so whoever licenses the game gets the robots in the sweep. Isn't that awesome?

Yes, there's no Mazinger. Yes, there's no Gundams or Getter Team. NERV is absent, and so is 3G. It's a small price to pay for having one and soon to be two entries in the Super Robot Wars series available legit in the United States. Who knows? If it does well, there could be more on the way. The real stuff, this time. Atlus is just that awesome.

Super Robot Wars has hit the U.S., ladies and gentlemen. We never thought it would happen, but it's happened. Here's hoping it's not a one-time fluke.

Besides, some of these guys are genuinely awesome. Even rendered with early GBA graphics, Granzon's complete PWNing of any and all who approach him is freakin' awesome. I hope Hugo and Aqua from MX appear in OG2...

It's sort of a detective game.

There are parts that play out sort of like a point-and-click adventure, but the main meat is the courtroom segments. Basically, the story plays out and you're given witness testimony to pick apart: the goal is to take the witness' testimony apart piece-by-piece until you get at the truth. Sometimes they're merely mistaken, sometimes they're outright lying, and sometimes they're the real culprit. Press them for details on their statements for clues, or to reveal weak points in their testimony, and present evidence to point out contradictions. For example, in the first case, you pin the witness on the issue of what time he saw the suspect leave the scene of the crime: the time he recollects in his testimony is three hours off from the actual time of the murder. He then claims he must have heard the time announced on a videotape left playing on TV, but you have evidence to kill that: a record of a blackout occurring during the time of the murder. Present that, and his statement comes to pieces, and he invents another version of events to try and confound you. Eventually he breaks down completely when you finally reveal that his web of lies has actually revealed himself to be the murderer.

It sounds dull, but the presentation is awesome, and the cases are full of plenty of twists. It's definitely worth the hype.

Actually, we've got around half the series available in the U.S.. GaoGaiGar is due out in English for the first time at the end of the month.

It's a matter of time and effort. Lots and lots of time and effort. Time and effort that nobody has gone into thus far. Somebody might, someday, and when that happens, we've got Super Robot Wars. It's not impossible: it's not guaranteed, but it's not impossible.

Get it here.

TheCheat (yes, named for the Homestar Runner character) fills a curious gap I discovered in the romhacker's toolbox: a customizable, ready-made VWF formatter. This, surprisingly, is the work of just over 24 hours, and it works great.

You'll need Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 to run it, which you can get through Windows Update. Enjoy.

EDIT: TheCheat has been updated to version 1.1. Got some great new features. Check it out.

Posted on 09-10-06 04:49 PM, in So I want to get TV from one part of my house to another. Link
The good news: I've got a nice new big TV in my house.

The bad news: Thanks to the crappy cable feed it's hooked up to, it's almost useless for actually watching television. I mean, I've still got a DVD player hooked up to it, but the television signal is...crap. Low channels are fuzzy; high ones are unwatchable.

I've got a great cable hookup elsewhere in my house...digital cable still screws up from time to time, but things have improved drastically since I unhooked that dinosaur splitter from the line. But to get that TV feed from point A to point B, I would have to run about 200 feet of cable across my house and through some very high-traffic areas.

The obvious solution, of course, is to go wireless. Problem is, I don't know if that's possible. I'd do searches on Best Buy, Circuit City and Radio Shack, but I don't even freakin' know what to look for.

What I'm trying to ask is this: is there any way to wirelessly transmit a signal from a wall outlet to a TV?

'Cept that it'd be Yoko Shimomura remixing Strong Bad's masterwork, not Uematsu.

Consider this also a second vote for Robin Hood. Oh yes, we'll be getting KH3. That ending was too awesomely "WTH?" for them not to explain it someday. My one hope is that it's done better than KHII...really, that was a disappointment. The payoff for the first game's extra ending was a waste of an awesome teaser. ;

I hope it's not too long...

Some bastard malware group called step57 hacked the SFCCE forums where I got much of my morale support for my project. The admin is too big a coward/idiot to do anything about it and won't answer my e-mails.

That, I find, is not difficult to believe. I'm a B-rank amateur fan translator with no completed work under his belt but one very large "almost", and even then I've written two compression routines that do better compression than the originals they're for.

LZ is a wonderful thing. This kind of power could prove addictive.

Give a man a fish, and he eats for a day.

Teach a man to fish, and he eats for a lifetime.

Shove a man's head into the water after he demands a fish from you at knifepoint, and he'll never eat again.

Let this be a lesson to us all.

I'm Ryusui, and I've been fooling with translation hacking on and off for the past few years. I have yet to actually release a completed patch, but I currently have one in beta testing, and I've done some compression-related work on a few other titles. I do my own translation work, ASM hacking and graphics hacking.

http://theryusui.googlepages.com/patlabor.rup

This is a graphics patch for Patlabor - The Mobile Police for SNES (in NINJA 2.0 format; get the patcher from http://ninja.cinnamonpirate.com/). I've yet to do enough work to get the dialogue translated (which will require some text compression), but the command buttons have been translated. The font used for them is the VWF from RPGe's fan translation of Final Fantasy V, and the images themselves were created using my own TheCheat. These graphics were stored in linear format and compressed; the act of inserting these graphics required two stages of conversion using custom tools written by myself.

I've actually halfway implemented a VWF in a GBA game.

How hard it is depends on the print routine. The game I've been working on uses two different methods of printing text: for the menus and intro, it's all printed to memory and then copied to VRAM in one big chunk. That's the part I've got done. For dialogue, it's printed to memory one character at a time and copied incrementally to VRAM. This requires some more serious hacks, especially considering how I'm having issues getting the tilemap to line up properly with the printed characters.
