I return with news of a new hack. I haven't forgotten SMW Redrawn, but I'm doing foregrounds and backgrounds that will eventually end up in the final release of that as I work on Mario's Lost World. I'm still using mainly SMW Redrawn sprites as placeholders at this point, but I do plan to redesign most of the enemies with a primitive or pirate motif at some point. Most of the stuff here is hand drawn, but there are some modified rips sprinkled about.

Title screen. It's got words and Mario and Goombas and such.

Map of the first area. You start off on a cruise ship and head inland as the world progresses.

A bit of story courtesy Toadsworth.

Cruise ship tiles in a state of incompletion, so I'm trying not to show them too much. I definitely need something other than the cement block in front of those cannons.

Porcupuffer guards the surface...

And there are also plenty of fishies under the waves.

The Yellow Switch Palace is crawling with Shy Guys and the like.

More crawling.

Autoscroll level with rising and falling tide.

Oh no! The wooden platform is blocking the P-Switch!

Lots of Rexes in the canyon.

Plenty of critters for Yoshi to eat here.

Yup, they're just begging to be eaten.

Another map shot. Bright palettes need toning down here.

Sunset level. Look at all that fire and stuff.

Everything grows wings in the forest, apparently.

Bramble level. You don't want to touch the briars. Prickly pears fall on you if you walk beneath them.

Balloon Mario tries not to get popped by all the sharp stuff.

Mario races ahead of the block train, hoping not to get Thwomped.

More Thwomps to avoid on line-guided lifts.

Bounce off Dry Bones to cross the bone pit.

The floating skulls help Mario cross the ectoplasm sea.

Underground. It's dark.

More treetops.

Goombas at the beach.

Too many fish!

OK, actually, this is too many fish. New bridge graphics are being created.

No Yoshies beyond this point, please.

mikeyk's Hammer Bros. Did I mention I'm really looking forward to Spritetool?

Lakitu's just begging for a facefull of Beetle shell.

And that's that. I'm seriously trying to make fun levels, but who knows if I'm succeeding... Nitpick whatever you can see from the screenshots. Demo coming eventually.

Looking good as usual, icegoom. If there's one thing I don't like, it's the graphical style of the overworld. It just doesn't seem to fit with the rest of it, you know?

Truly amazing. I cannot even say what I'm feeling. You truly are a graphical God. The Level Designs are also really, really creative.

I've never been horribly happy with the cliffs on the overworld. I was just trying to get as much detail as I could with the colors I had available. Maybe I should just go back to the single-colored flat look for the cliffs and grass and just scatter some texture tiles about. Are the palettes better in the first map shot?

Hmm.....if you could make the OW palette from the 1st picture a tad darker it would be perfect besides that the 1st one's better .

Holy SH1T!!!!!!

I thought Ghettoyouth was the only one who could make GFX like that, but this is a step above.

To me, much of the graphics aren't very good. Take for example the title screen, overworld, and forest levels -- the graphics look like static and are difficult to see.

Also, were you drunk when you made the typeface?

Unpredictable. Watch your backs. Or not. Whichever. I want Metal Gear Solid 4 so badly.

The overworld kinda hurts my eyes because the neon green and blue. Other than that, it looks like ghettoyouth has some heavy competition on his hands.

Oh no, now my bramble level won't be as awesome and unique now

I have to say... this is quite good work. It looks like what SMW would have looked like if it was released at the end of the SNES era, instead of the start. And your level design... gah. Amazing, is what it is.

Constructive critiscims? (ignore the bad spelling, I'm too lazy to look up how to spell it) Well... not must different from other people's. The OW is bright, but you said you'd tone it down already. In the bone pit/ectoplasm level, the ectoplasm pool doesn't seem like it goes all the way down, so it just looks like a coat of goo on the floor, not a pool.

Other than that (and the slight sadness I have of my brambles level being already done now), I like it.

After doing a number of tests (on-screen colour count, pixel alignments) I can say this quite surely is not a fake or photomontage. Thus, I am honestly impressed, not to say astonished. If this is ever released, it will easily knock Sunny Side World off the #1 position in my private SMW hack graphics toplist.
