I've heard a lot in recent times about the upcoming DS game entitled "The new Super Mario Bros.", but I know very little about it, save a few screenies and the promo video. Does anyone know anything about it, like gameplay features or proposed release dates?

If you like reading about rumors and stuff. Otherwise, not very useful.

Not much, but, hey, might be stuff there you haven't seen yet. *shrug*

Wonder if Nintendo will go the distance and make this a Wi-Fi title, too? I dunno.

I'm hoping they call this one Super Mario Bros. 4, personally.

And I'm hoping it's really big, fun, and hard.

Guess it's scheduled for release in May for Japan, meaning it will hopefully be here by fall.

This game looks so awesome. I love the Super Super Mushroom! It's like playing Paper Mario's Bowser stage over again, minus the fire-breathing. Maybe they'll even have some kind of secret Super Fire Flower...

Nothing I haven't seen or heard before. Guess we'll just have to wait for it to be released.

videos

I forgot all about this

the bottom video I've already seen; it was up before the DS was out
the other two are interesting, particularly the second one down.

in the top video, the guy playing it sucks.

It's really cool how the enemies can now get items. I wanna feed them mushrooms on purpose.

I wanna feed 'em Fire Flowers! That'd be awesome. I somehow doubt that's possible, though.

I wonder if they'll even include poison mushrooms. Since the Lost Levels, no Mario platformer has had them.

I hope so.

They need Poisonous Fire Flowers. You'd shoot out purple clouds that cause enemies to grow and/or breath fire. That would so awesome.

Somehow I doubt that they'll do that, but it would be cool. It would also be good if they included a flight powerup like capes or racoon tails.

You should see those scans too. It's newer and it shows alot! Well, from my point of view.

I see it's all sprite based. Interesting; I thought it would be 3D models instead

Screens that caught my attention:

That environment looks pretty sweet.

Hey, I know you!

The number of different environments seen in these videos/images indicates that this game is rather large. I hope so. I really, really hope it's at least as big as SMW. I don't like short games with no replay value, even if they're really awesome the first time through. They make me go =(.
Kirby Canvas Curse is an example. Now that I've unlocked all the secret things, there's not much to do. Replaying the levels gets old pretty quickly, and there's no way I'm going to get the remaining medals...

edit: clockworkz, the characters are 3D models, as you can see in the videos.

That's what I thought of SMW2: YI. Too small, not enough replay value. Now SMB3 and SMW1 are games worth the attention.

And on the subject of New Super Mario Bros.... Ailure pointed out that the word "New" might be dumb after a while. Perhaps it'd be called something different, SMB5 perhaps (or maybe only SMB5 in Japan, SMB4 to the Western World). Hell, Return of the Super Mario Bros. isn't so bad either.

I'd like to see a return to the classic style of Super Mario Bros. No collect-a-thons or saving (although that might be asking for a bit too much), just pure gaming with nothing else to worry about. This looks promising.

I'd prefer the SMW model: multiple exits, an interesting overworld map with lots of secrets, the ability to replay levels...

That's my second favorite style, but I say "no saving" because it encourages me to play through more often, rather than casting it aside after finishing with it 100%. Multiple exits/routes would be a nice thing to see, though. I'd be fine with that.
