Looks pretty cool. You might try darkening the blue stars a smidgen, though.

I started messing around with Super Mario World a little bit, just with GFX though. I don't really know much about SMW hacking, so I don't know the extent of what I'll do with this game, but here's a new Mario sprite I'm working on:

SoNotNormal --- The stars look nice but I would advise one of 2 things.
1) --- If they're animated ignore this the white would give them a nice "twinkly" feeling.
2) --- If they're not animated I would advise a) giving an extra pixel here and there between the white and blue so it's smother not so.....Out there. Or b) make the white more blueish.

Dr. Mario --- The new Mario looks...........different. I don't mean that in a bad way the sprite itself looks great and I know how hard sprite editing for a hack can be. I would just like a reason Mario's now this creepy, cloaked, yellow-eyes.....black mageish sort of thing. Oh yeah and the small sprite could do to be a little smoothed out he looks like some happy kid waving his arms.

The stars are actually layer 3. I'll take yours and HH's advice, and maybe try to change the palette to make them look cooler. Thanks guys

@SoNotNormal: I'd have to disagree with their criticisms. That pic looks great the way it is.

Here's a work in progress:

It's supposed to look like the background is a cardboard playset, I'm going to add scribbles and child-like drawings to it also. Yeah, if I do a full hack it's going to be offbeat, or at least that's my intention.

**EDIT**
I scrapped the Cardboard idea completely, I hated it after I put it in game. I decided to make a nice mountain range instead. I still have some more room to work with, so it's definately a WIP, but here's what it looks like so far:

Nice mountain range... I notice it's been added to your layout as well. (The squished cloak guy is neat).

Thanks! Here's a concept of what I'm thinking of doing with some of the FG Graphics. I'm very new to SMW hacking, so I have to figure out ExGFX for the foreground, but I'm sure it will come to me.

I like them, Doc. You did a good job of implementing old graphics (the sinking platforms) in a new way. I like the cloaked guy as well. Good work.

The ground patter does seem like it might get repetitive quickly, though... It still looks good.

Well Dr Mario this hack is looking nice including the backgrounds (the mountains and water look nice). My opinion still stands about how the little cloacked guys look (but the squished one seems to of fixed the problem maybe making the cloak fan out a bit on the bottom is the key). All in all nice looking hack keep up the good work.

PS --- So far it seems you're going all out but what of the enemies I'd like to see what you're doing with some of them.

Looking very good. The combination of graphic elements from different levels is very original and looks like it could be a genuine sequel to the original Castlevania. The palette work is nice, too. Any other information or screen shots on the hack(s)?

Also, what is the difference, if I may ask, between "Retold II" and "Retold SE?"

Two ASCII characters. HA!

The hacks themselves though? I'm interested myself.

Retold II: A new story?
Retold SE: Upgraded GFX of Retold I.

My best bet.

Also, is this topic just for ROM hacks, or for anything ROMHacking related?

Arthus got it, I've been working (off and on) on CV Retold II for a long time, over a year, it's six brand new levels with graphics ripped from all three NES titles. I have quite a few bugs to fix, these might hold back the release.

CV Retold SE (Special Edition) is CV Retold 2.0 with upgraded graphics and palettes, I felt the original looked terrible alongside Retold II. It also has some bug fixes, and returns Level 5 to its original graphics (Face it, these graphics were great, better than anything I can replace them with)

I really like the palette choice for the Mario map DD, it looks really cool.

While I'm just editing graphics for games and not really making any hacks, here's something I just started up today for Castlevania.
