I generally research games before I buy them unless I come across them for a low price and therefore wouldn't be cranky if I wound up wasting money on a piece of crap. I think the last thing we bought on impulse was Katamari Damacy. Rando saw it and thought it looked amusing, so he got it, and it wound up being one of my favorite games.

Being that I signed up here on June 29, 2001, I felt the need to clutter up this forum with yet another thread to commemorate the occasion. Now let's all put on our lollerskates and go get some roffles and w00t b33r. Just make sure that you don't get any roofles by mistake. We wouldn't want to forget all the fun we had, now, would we?

Oh, and Chester just headbutted my shoulder, so I think he wants to say hi, too. (This is from sometime last year, but he still looks the same.)

*is flattened into a pancake by the anvil*

*after a few seconds, springs back into her normal shape with a POP*

Ow. *proceeds to stagger around for a bit*

Alas, there is no w00t b33r in the house. I wish I could find 12-packs of Diet A&W somewhere. I love that stuff, but I never see it for sale in any form other than 20 ounce bottles at Sheetz. We do have regular beer in the basement, but I'm not in the mood for one right now.

Happy belated/upcoming 4th (and 3rd, which is still pretty cool) to any other oldbies hanging around.

I recently came across a board in which someone received a mod warning for using the word "lame" as an insult. It is evidently considered "ableist" language (read: offensive to the disabled). That seemed downright ridiculous to me. I can understand why some people take offense to words such as "gay" and "retarded" being used as synonyms for "dumb", "teh sux", etc., as said words are very commonly used to describe people with some characteristic, so using them as an insult can be construed as saying that the characteristic itself is Bad (umkay?). I could also see somebody getting annoyed at, say, "Boy, that movie sure was handicapped! No plot, bad acting...it really was a guy in a wheelchair waste of time! It was even more quadriplegic than Gigli!"

But really, when's the last time you heard anyone use "lame" in everyday speech to describe a physical difficulty? Its colloquial meaning seems to be the most common usage by far. Heck, at least one dictionary lists "feeble" as its first definition (source).

Then there's the issue of euphemisms and different ways of saying the same thing. I can understand saying that "Bob uses a wheelchair" instead of "Bob is confined to a wheelchair". No meaning is lost, and it sounds less pity-inducing (and is probably more accurate - most people aren't actually in the chair 24-7). But I would never say "Bob is differently abled" because it is awkward and very ambiguous. Differently abled from whom and in what sense? You could say that Joe and Susie are differently abled in sports because Joe is better at soccer and Susie is better at baseball. You could also say that they're differently abled in science because Joe is better at biology and Susie is better at physics. Yada yada yada.

I also think it's stupid to chuck out perfectly OK words just because they happen to resemble something offensive. Niggardly is not a racial slur. Anybody who freaks out over that needs a good drubbing with a dictionary. Gah.

At any rate, I'm curious...when do you think it's worthwhile to try to use inoffensive language, and when do you think it gets silly?

Mine's stuck on the wall. I don't mind it there because I really have no use for a removable shower head. I mainly like to shower because it's an efficient way to wash my body and my >2 feet long hair at the same time, and our shower is fine for that because the head is up high enough that I don't have to bend my knees to get under it (or take it off and spray my head myself).

Word to that and your earlier post. Also, I strongly disagree with the principle of discarding harmless words just because they might sound bad to someone unfamiliar with their meaning. The more vocabulary in a language, the wider range of nuance and connotation one can express with it. Why limit that to pander to others' ignorance? It's unreasonable to expect Joe or Jane Sixpack to know the definition of every single word they encounter, but what exactly is so horrific about expecting them to have the basic intellectual curiosity required to look up definitions of words they don't know? Dictionaries, reference desks, and teh intarweb exist for a reason. If someone doesn't know what a word means, it should be their responsibility to look it up or otherwise find out. If they don't know how to spell it or don't have access to an appropriate reference, they could even (now here's a concept) ask the person what they said instead of immediately hitting the roof. In general, I am severely chafed by the concept that a speaker or writer is supposed to try to choose words that everyone who could possibly come across their work would understand. I've actually seen people complain that scientific journals are too incomprehensible. Can we say holy technical audience, Batman? There are many, many complex concepts and processes in science that are commonly represented by a single word. Would it not get ludicrous if every paper involving such a concept or process had to teach it in excruciating detail for anybody who lacked a background in the subject and happened to come across the research?

At any rate, I can understand thinking that a word might be offensive, but there's no excuse for freaking out unless you're sure that it actually was.

Ben rhymes with ??? - Even if you're teaching a university class discussing the works of Chaucer, in which "niggardly" actually appears? (link) I agree that it would be prudent to avoid the word when addressing Joe and Jane Sixpack, but you'd think that adults in a literature course would be mature enough to handle a word included in said literature. In high school English class, we read Huckleberry Finn, which includes many, many instances of the actual word "nigger". Said class was racially diverse, with multiple black students, and nobody went batzoid over it. The teacher made it clear that the book had been written over a century ago when the word was not so loaded, and the context was inoffensive as well. It's not as if we were studying KKK drivel with all manner of disgusting statements about [insert racial slur obviously intended as a slur].

I'm glad I'm not the only one here who currently has a wacky sleep schedule and tends to experience sleep schedule shifts when she doesn't have to be anywhere at certain times. About five years ago, before my summer job started, I would fall asleep around dinnertime and wake up sometime after midnight. Currently, I sleep about four hours a night for a few nights and then crash for at least 12 hours. My body is just fucked up in general due to stress (costume time crunch for Otakon, my pointless treadmill to nowhere job that I so cannot wait to leave). I feel like a big grey blob of nothing and I don't get hungry like normal any more. I usually skip the "growling stomach" step, so if I haven't eaten enough, I don't think about it until I start getting loopy. Weeee. At least I can still hit the gym.

So there's one of my vices...parlaying a general topic into a rant. My others are alcohol (especially good beer), a very occasional clove cigarette, certain junky foods (Oriental flavor Top Ramen, Cheez-Its, pretty much any dessert of reasonable quality), and screwing around on the internets at work.

Being a major fan of the 1971 version, I had to see this one, and I tried to give it as fair of a chance as possible, but I left with an overwhelming feeling of "Eh."

I loved the opening, which reminded me of the beginning of Edward Scissorhands (a Burton/Depp movie I liked very much). I liked how Augustus Gloop was not only gluttonous but rude (in the old movie, he wasn't very bratty at all, probably because he was portrayed by a German kid who barely spoke English and therefore got few lines). I thought Charlie Bucket was great - wide-eyed and good-natured without ever coming off as saccharine or phony. The sets ranged from good to awesome, so no complaints there. The shiny candy boat ruled. Though I preferred the 1971 movie's characterization of Violet Beauregarde as a nerd with no self-restraint (probably because I am also a nerd who runs her mouth...can you tell? ), I did think that they did an excellent job with the "overachiever" characterization. She and her mother were sickeningly plasticine and I was very happy to see them go.

Buuuut...

I can't get past the characterization of Wonka. I hated it. Sorry, but I did. It's not that he looked like Michael Jackson. It's not that he was different from Gene Wilder's eccentric, generally dignified, rather old-fashioned Uncle Wonka. It's that no matter what the character was, I would have found him to be quite annoying. He was rude without provocation ("I don't care" is not the proper response to a polite introduction), childish, and seemingly quite out of control of a tour going on through his own factory. All the random high-voiced speech and giggles worked my nerves. I also thought it was a poor characterization of Wonka because Wonka seemed, well, much more like Gene Wilder's portrayal. I would expect him to be rather goofy, yes, but he would use more timeless language and speak more formally. "Ew", "You're weird", "Chewing gum is really gross", etc. seem very un-Wonka-ish to me.

I didn't care for the father subplot. It seemed pointless to me, and it wasn't even in the book. I also disliked the Oompa Loompa music in this version. I know the lyrics were book-accurate, but they were often incomprehensible, and the idea of having different musical styles and uber-choreographed dancing just didn't work for me. The 1971 version had simpler songs with the same melody but slight differences in orchestration. I liked these much better.

The movie's tone bugged me because it was inconsistently dark/bleak and OMG HAR HAR HERE'S SLAPSTICK IT'S FUNNY LAUGH. Edward Scissorhands had funny moments without fucking up the tone. Why couldn't Burton pull that again this time? Most of the IT'S FUNNY LAUGH obvious humor did not appeal to me. The 1971 version contained lots of subtle funnies and amusingly memorable lines. "A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men" (delivered in a diabolical singsong) has been my GameFAQs sig line for several years now.

Overall...glad I saw it because I was curious, but I don't particularly care to see it again.

I would like to see a movie inspired by the Silent Hill series: ordinary person gets pulled into a bizarre tale leading them through a psychologically horrifying world that inexplicably changes from normal to blood and rust and back again. The story would be key, and it would be slowly revealed in bits and pieces and never fully explained, leaving some aspects as an exercise to the viewer. In particular, the reasons for the world shifting to and from a nightmarish state (and the exact nature of any monsters found within) should be left a mystery, even if they are hinted at. Silent Hill 2 is my favorite in the series partly because it does just that (whereas the first game explained the shifts, which was a letdown to me when I found out why they were happening). The exception to this would be if the movie were like Jacob's Ladder (which was an inspiration for the first game in the series). At the very end of Jacob's Ladder,

Spoiler:
we learn that the main character imagined the entire thing while dying.
I would accept such an explanation for world shifts and bizarre unexplained occurrences. The point is that I would not want to see the movie definitively spell out "ZOMG an evil demon is controlling the world!" or "The protagonist has been high on some drug the entire time!" Again, hints are fine, but in my experience, "normal world goes absolutely bonkers" material is best left up to the viewer to decipher.

I had read the book years ago, but I bought it and read it today to refresh my memory. (Plus, I wanted a copy to keep around the house. It is a good story. ) There is an initial reference to Wonka's "high, fluty" voice and he does tend to babble excitedly, so I can see where those aspects of Depp's character came from. However, the book never tells you whether the high voice was Wonka's normal tone or just used for the initial greeting of everyone. Wonka does greet the children politely (although that could be interpreted as sarcasm...still, he was not outright rude like Depp), but he doesn't use slang and he never sounds like a refugee from the short bus. He is eccentric and excitable and prone to go off on tangents, but he seems to be intelligent and together, whereas Depp is apparently clueless or drugged half the time. Honestly, when rereading the book, the most Wonka-esque actor who came to mind was Robin Williams. He's done endearingly wacky interacting with children roles very well before (Mrs. Doubtfire, Rainbow Randolph in Death to Smoochy), and he can go careening off into la la land while still making sense. I think I would have preferred Williams as a more twinkly, animated, book-like Wonka.

YAAAAAAY!!!!11!one I'd heard rumors of a SH movie but never come across any concrete information. I'm not familiar with the director in question, but I trust your opinion.

The movie is evidently being filmed now. (link to IMDB info) Perhaps I should have looked there before posting, but I figured it would at least be OK to give an opinion on what I hope the movie is like.

Now some greedy nincompoop is suing Rockstar because she bought the game for her 14-year-old grandson and didn't know it had ZOMG TEH BOOBIES in it. What the hell part of "M-rated" does she not comprehend? And, as has been mentioned many times during discussions on the subject, fuckloads of gang violence, swearing, and racial slurs are just dandy, but a sex scene will corrupt the poor teenager forever and ever? The kid is probably beating off to naked pictures already, so somehow I doubt that it would warp his fragile mind. Granny is in desperate need of a beating with the clue bat.

Yeah, I'd think any sane judge would laugh her right out of the room. I'm wondering how the fudge she got a lawyer to go along with her stupidity, though.

And I completely agree with your comment to Ziff. I support government regulations when they fix an actual problem of public safety. For instance, meat packing plants in the United States used to have abysmal sanitation. (Reference Upton Sinclair's The Jungle, which is public domain and available at various online book archives. Just don't read it while you're eating. ) Food safety regulations were passed to deal with this problem. That's fine and dandy. On the other hand, media with violent and sexual content is not inherently damaging. You're not going to get sick and die from playing a video game where the object is to go on a criminal rampage. It's understandable that parents would want to keep this material away from their children, but that's what being a parent entails. Government resources should not be pissed away to nerf the world and pander to people who are too farking lazy to exert control over what comes into their house and to teach kids the difference between real and make-believe (and the basic concept that hurting other people is Bad, Umkay).

Got any stories to share?

At a frat party, my friend Josh noticed some fuckstain putting roofies in a girl's drink. He and some other people confronted fuckstain. Fuckstain denied it. Josh made him consume the drink. Fuckstain passed out and Josh and some of his brothers chucked him out the (first floor) window onto the lawn. They removed his pants and shoes and threw them over the telephone wires, wrote RAPIST on him in Magic Marker, and left him there. I have no idea whether or not the fuckstain ever got into legal trouble, but somehow I doubt he ever tried that again.

By a proper tinfoiling, do you mean something like this?

Well, I'm sure that the method of transporting the would-be rapist outside banged him up somewhat. I forgot to mention that there was a screen in the window and he went right through it. And Josh never told me what happened to him the morning after. I'm sure he had quite the walk of shame to endure (and I wouldn't be surprised if it involved more than one beating along the way).

Oh yeah. Here's another story...

There's a local chiropractic office that's extremely quacky. It's not the sort of place that will get a kink out of your back and be done with it. They actually advertise chiropractic as an alternative to vaccines and medications and whatnot. This place has a movable letter sign used to display different promotional messages ranging from benign to ridiculous. A recent word of wisdom: "How does Tylenol know you have a headache? Try chiropractic".

A few years back, one of the doctors was convicted of domestic abuse and the sign had some similar message wrongfully pimping chiropractic as some magical substitute for actual medicine. Late one weekend night, my friend Dan and his friend were riding around and decided it would be a good time to play anagrams. They rearranged the sign letters to the following:

CHIROPRACTIC CURES AIDS
I BEAT MY WIFE

And it stayed like that all weekend until the office opened on Monday. I wish Dan would have gotten a picture of it before it was put back.
